I’m struggling to write this review the same way I struggled to finish this book. What a frustratingly depressing story. Never did the heroine actually love and cherish her “mateâ€, she was hormonally impulsed to be with him. That’s it. She was violated multiple times by multiple people, including being beaten and forced to watch violent rape videos after being ripped from her mother and her home, as well as by her hero. By the time he gets to her she’s so spiritually broken she just lets it happen. And don’t get me started on the obscene amount of bodily fluids FREQUENTLY mentioned throughout the book. At one point I gagged. And while she grows to think he’s funny and nice, never is passion described for her thoughts towards him. It’s always that she can’t control her bodies reactions so she just gives in. She admits that she has no other options as he makes it clear she will never go anywhere. There was zero chemistry between the two characters. They never got to know each other aside from the “what do you like to do in your spare time†conversations and you don’t even meet the hero until the middle of the book. Which completely threw me for a loop. Obviously I hated the first male we’re made to think is the hero. But I was hoping he’d eventually catch on and stop violating her. Every single character introduced was dislikable. And the heroine suffered so much trauma I was anxious and upset throughout the entire book. Just hoping that something good would happen. If you enjoy reading books about rape trauma and zero consent or rights then this book is right up your alley. If you prefer loving and passionate books then run for the hills.
It's an amazing book and everyone in the world NEEDS to read it IMMEDIATELYBasically, Morgaine is an Omega (who isn't aware of her status) and has been living peacefully in her settlement with her mother. Once a season, Alpha soldiers come to their villages to take crops...and Omegas (think, almost like The Hunger Games world, where one day you're living a relatively normal life, then the next you're carted off somewhere). Morgaine has been successfully hiding for a few years before finally being found. She's taken by the Alphas to their ship, is told about what she is and what's expected (to take a mate). They treat her a bit roughly and she doesn't like it (don't worry, this doesn't last too long). Then one day, a different group of Alphas board the ship. Almost immediately, their Prince (Simin) noticed her and essentially demands she be handed over to him or else he would go to war to get her. She's handed over. She's scared. But Simin is relentless in his courtship and sexiness ensues.I love everything from Addison Cain (she's a phenomenal writer and her worlds & characters are addictive). So why the four stars? To be clear, this is an expansion of Consumed, which was a short story in the Royally Mine anthology (which is no longer available; it was limited release only). I have Consumed. I love(d) it and when I heard it was being expanded into a novella, I was beyond happy. So, again, why four stars?1) I get that Morgaine was ripped from her family (her mother, to be exact) and taken to a new place with scary men who treated her not so nicely (in that they wanted to get sexy with her and she was like, nah, plz don't touch me). But pretty much in the first half of the book, it was almost like every other paragraph was Morgaine crying, Morgaine missing her mom, Morgaine wanting her mom, Morgaine hating these men for taking her away from her mom, more crying, etc. It got to a point where she was almost like...a lost child. I was hoping to see more sass and strength from her.2) Simin, the main hero -- he didn't appear until almost halfway through the book. But OMG, when he finally did appear and we're treated to more scenes of him and Morgaine...UGH, I love him. He's Alpha, he's funny and he's good. There are passages about him that deserve a Nobel Prize in Literature or something of that honor. So definitely read it, like NOW, because Simin is worth it.
I'm not sure what's happened to this author. This felt kind of like teenager wrote it. Right down to repeatedly calling someone that looks and dresses differently, or comes from a different culture, savages, animals, demon/devil, or beasts. So hot right? Not to mention that the lead character was one of the whiniest, sniveling little wenches I've come across in a long time. She had such a deep victim complex, that I thought I'd wandered into Lena Dunham's inner dialogue. The plot was solid but just so poorly executed, I just spent a lot of time skimming after awhile...I honestly should have known, so this is entirely my fault. Addison Cain has the tendency to paint herself into a corner, so to speak. Sigil, Stolen, Reborn- the one thing they all have in common, is the stories dry up and fall apart to the point where the author literally abandons all notions of finishing it (properly, cohesively, or plausibly). Don't read this. DON'T get anything by her that isn't a STAND ALONE book, and abandon this sinking ship with me.
I liked some of Addision Cain books a lot, but the Golden line is her best book to date hands down. Morgaine and Simin were perfect for each other. I don't understand why in Omegaverse stories there's always violence from the Alpha to his Omega. In this story the Alpha Simin saved Morgaine from other Alphas that harmed her. Simin treated her with love, respect, understanding and he courted her. I wish it could have been more of their relationship in the book since they only really met in the second half of the book and the book is already short to begin with. I just wish that in Addision Cain's new books that she writes, has more love and intimacy between the characters like it did in this one.
It was a book but it wasnt a good one. Cant recommend author because i have no intention to buy any of her books ever again. I have read at least two and both were huge letdowns considering the author is best seller. Both books were trashy and embarrasing and so alike.
When a feral Omega is captured by an Alpha race, it takes a savage to bring her home. Morgaine is destined to me a mate for Simin. It takes everything he knows to teach her that truth. Read this story of love to see how he convinces her that she is meant to be his. As usual, Ms. Cain leaves us wanting more, but it appears that this is a ride I'll want to stay on.
