Charnock's Discourses Upon the Existence and Attributes of God is a classic among classics. It is a massive work that is comprised of two volumes. This particular edition contains both volumes in one book, a total of nearly 800 pages.Charnock deals with the attributes of God in what he calls "Discourses." These are each lengthy treatments of a fairly narrow (if that could be said of God) attribute of the God of the Bible. For example, Charnock devotes 55 pages (small print, too) to a discussion of the immutability (unchangeable nature) of God, and he examines the knowledge of God for 63 pages. Equally thorough sections cover many other attributes such the eternity of God, the power of God, and the dominion of God--to list just a few.Charnock's discourses are stunning, to say the least. He held an extremely high view of God that seems to be lost in much of the church today. His writing will challenge your thinking, making you consider things you probably haven't thought of before. He delves deeply into each characteristic, organizing his comments with an outline format and providing much Scripture to back up his positions. On the down side, the language is dated, and this makes reading a bit more difficult. Additionally, the book reviewed here is a reproduction (a scan) of an original published in 1849 by Henry G. Bohn, this from the library of the University of California. Because it is a scan, the typeface is an old one, the text is fairly small, and the quality is acceptable but not great. In any case, this is a fantastic work and a sweeping survey of our magnificent God.

Speechless, don't know where to begin. Stephen Charnock's writings have won my heart over ANY other author, hands down. I would purchase any book he has ever written. His writings stir up emotions and touch the soul in a way no other author can. Thought I would highlight the "important" lines, but ended up highlighting nearly half a page on every page in the whole book. It is impossible to leave out anything because everything he says is valuable. No wasted words here.

Stephen Charnock's life works concerning the nature of God from the Bible. Each page is so deep that it takes me 1/2 hour per page to digest what he has written. I can open the book up to any page and learn something new from this thoughtful theologian.

I haven't found a good kindle version of this book. I tried 3 versions. Every version has a couple of typos about every page. I ended up by buying the hard copy version. Charnock is repetitive to a fault. He's makes his point so thoroughly that this reader wants to scream. However, they are jewels in the rough. He can be pithy and poignant. The different versions have different chapters. The "God is Spirit" chapter (I don't think is in my hard copy) is especially verbose, but it is very good in parts. On the actual attributes starting with God's eternality, he seems to be more on point, but he is verbose. Once again, he is worth reading slowly. I found myself thinking this is really obvious, but in the next sentence he brought out a point of view I never thought of before. He is a deep thinker.

I think the first chapter to read should be "Discourse XI: On The Holiness Of God" (page 108, Vol. 2). Profound insights that can be inspirational and, sometimes, unsettling.

This book is one of my favorites. I have no words to express how much I enjoy reading this book. I you like reading and meditating on the Bible you will enjoy it also.

This is a life changing text if you are a Bible Person. Everyone I know that has read this has had their lives changed; including myself!

Glad for reviews that pointed out this is the book for those individuals who are getting their first iPhone. My husband was transitioning from a flip phone to iPhone 8 plus. Mine is a 6 so his will do things mine won't do. Especially with the photographs. I have learned somethings about my phone from looking at this book I didn't know. Pictures are very explanatory. Husband has quit asking me daily questions. I see him looking at this book. It is very basic. Very. Lots of pictures and the pictures show exactly where to look and what to do. I will definitely recommend it to my non technically gifted friends who call me at all hours of day and night with cell phone questions.

This book has it all for the iPhone novice, which is what I am. Whether you need answers to basic questions or detailed, this book will help. I would suggest, however, that readers simply use the phone as they might normally use it, but, using this book, gradually explore features as they need them. The book is probably thus used as a reference over a longer period of time. Over time, many features of the phone may never be used by many people, but just knowing what capabilities are available gives us confidence that if we do want to delve into them, this book will show us how to do that.

This is a very basic book which is exactly what this non-techy senior citizen needed to understand my iPhone.

For the most part the book is clear and the steps one needs to take are well photographed. Today I decided to learn how to make videos to which the book only dedicates two pages. I was able to figure out the video part and then wondered if it would automatically record the sound. The answer is no. I looked at numerous topics in the table of contents and could find nothing about adding audio to a video. By using other resources on the internet I figured out that one has to go into settings and muck around with the control center. The book has no information about this and I am concerned that the writers could leave out such a basic and important topic. I looked at some videos and tutorials and finally figured out how to activate the sound but it took me almost an hour.

Sometimes I review products just for me and my tastes and other times I review them because I know and understand the audience that would love them. I'm reviewing this book a bit from my Dad's point of view because he would absolutely love it.We've all got a parent or grandparent that isn't great with tech. They like to hold onto the tech they know and need someone to walk them through new technology when they do get around to upgrading. That walk through is usually in the form of step by step instructions (push this, then type that, then push this...etc) and that is what this book excels. This book is going to be perfect for someone that wants to learn to use their iPhone 5 or older device with iOS 6 by being told exactly what to do and being shown exactly where each button that needs to be pressed is. In short its the book I'd leave my Dad if I had to leave him alone with his new phone and didn't want him to give up and use it as a paper weight.Following many set of instructions is a "tip" which is an extra fact or answer to a question you may have had about the set of instructions you just went over. I found some of the tips helpful and I actually liked some of the more condensed tip instructions better than the step by step instructions.I've looked at several iPhone 5 manuals/guides. Most have beautiful color pictures and are generally well written. This one is no exception. Its a well designed book that walks the user through all of the major and most minor functions of their phone. It doesn't give much extra information that isn't required for use(for instance iPhone: The Missing Manual has greater depth about the phones innards), but I think this is by design because the target audience for this book may not care so much about why things work, just how to use them.I could see someone reading this book cover to cover, but I think it is more likely to be used as a reference book as the step by step instructions strike me as more text book than read for pleasure. If this is how you plan to use the book you should be well set up. The index is fairly comprehensive and between it and the table of contents I was almost always able to quickly identify the section I was looking for.Final thoughts.I'm not saying that this is a book only for the tech challenged. I think its also probably one of the better reference style iPhone 5 books out there, getting most beginners up to speed quickly and providing a greater depth of skills to experienced users. For that it gets 4 stars. But for someone who wants to know everything about their phone and can get by without a step by step visual walk through there are more complete books in a more readable style.*******UPDATE: COMPARATIVE RANKINGSI never intended to read enough iPhone 5 "manuals" to truly compare them. First I just like learning about the phone. Then I got interested in the differences in teaching styles and ended up reading 5 really well put together books. I ended up rating them all relatively highly simply because they were all great books that will serve their target audiences very well. But since they're all great books you deciding on star ranking alone may not get you the right book so I'm adding a comparative ranking to each of my reviews to help you identify which target audience you might be in.I still stand by my initial reviews, but with more background my perspective has definitely grown.Overall Comprehensiveness:1) The Missing Manual (iPhone: The Missing Manual) - Covers from the tech in the phone to multiple ways to do almost everything2) My iPhone (My iPhone (Covers iPhone 4, 4S and 5 running iOS 6) (6th Edition)) - Maybe a touch less tech coverage than The Missing Manual, but not by much3) iPhone 5 for Dummies (iPhone 5 For Dummies (For Dummies (Computer/Tech)))- A reasonably comprehensive guide that doesn't bog down in tech detail and covers fewer ways to do things than the missing manual4) Teach Yourself Visually (Teach Yourself VISUALLY iPhone 5 (Teach Yourself VISUALLY (Tech))) - just a how-to usually one method per function5*) iPhone 5 for Dummies for Seniors (iPhone 5 For Seniors For Dummies (For Dummies (Computer/Tech))) - A moderately distilled version of the dummies book with more focus on "senior specific" topics(*I thought this should be singled out for its special topics of interest which my override total comprehensiveness for some buyers)Readability and Narrative:1) The Missing Manual - Reads well and the author has a bit of a sense of humor. The lack of walk throughs actually tends to make reading flow more naturally2) My iPhone - The narrative in this book made it accessible and helped disperse any nervousness you might have about learning a new tech device2) iPhone 5 for Dummies - A readable book, but certainly not my favorite read and probably not something I'd read for fun (even if I am a bit of a tech geek)4) iPhone 5 for Dummies for Seniors - Big text make this book "readable," but I wasn't engaged with the narrative5) Teach Yourself Visually - This book is walk throughs its not for light readingWalk throughs and step-by-step instructions:1) Teach Yourself Visually - Tons of brilliantly detailed instructions with pictures that point out exactly where to press2) My iPhone - Nice guides offset from the narrative in distinctive blue boxes with helpful pictures.3) iPhone 5 for Dummies for Seniors - More guided instructions than the regular Dummies iPhone book, but not close to the Teach Yourself Visually book that I would recommend to my parents in terms of quantity or quality4) iPhone 5 for Dummies5) The Missing Manual - Step by step, button-by-button guides are not emphasized. The book isn't void of all instructions, but they are imbedded in text and assume that you read the first chapters and can find the appropriate buttons.

My phone ringer was off for 2 days. When I discovered this, neither I nor my 2 teenage children (who are fairly tech-savvy) could figure out how to turn it back on. The phone itself offered no answers. As soon as we arrived home, I grabbed this clear, well-indexed book and immediately found that there was a hidden switch on the side of the phone (that I had inadvertently switched off when I searched for the charger input days earlier). The iphone 5 is my first smart phone. Using it is not intuitive to me. This book made the phone so easy to navigate. Buy this book as soon as you buy your iphone 5!

This book is for the true novice with an iPhone. It starts right where a new owner (who has never used an iPhone before) needs to start. I turned in my Droid for iPhone 5, and this book has helped me tremendously. Who knew that you start by plugging the phone into your computer before you start? Well, I didn't know. Probably most others know this, but I am not that tech-savy. So this book is for me! If you are new to an iPhone and not tech-savy, this book is for you. (I only gave it 4 stars because it has soooo much information that I feel that I need to read first, and I don't have the time to read everything -- cover-to-cover.) The organizational content of the book is such that it starts at the beginning of anything you want to learn (how-to get started all the way to becoming an expert). For me, I would have preferred a short summary of just the beginning stuff I need to know; then let me read the details later -- after I have played with the phone some more. Maybe your methodology for learning is different. But definitely a great book for a beginner.

Excellent reference; super pictures and diagrams to follow. For a first time user ofan iPhone it was the best.

Classic and amazing.

This is a must read book!! But I will say that I have a totally different point of view to the story than what most, in fact, all the reviews and editorials I have seen. I am not a bookworm and so the idea that books are gone is not an apocalyptic idea. The book was written before the internet and the information age. It is WHY the books are burned and WHAT the books represent that should open your eyes and minds while reading this book.If all you get out of this book is the "removal" of books from society to become more connected to our electronic devices I feel so bad for you.The point of burning the books is explained. I might give just a couple of spoilers, but everyone knows the premise of 1984 and this book is similar. It is so much more than about books. It is about censorship and the people wanting it. The government has banned all printed material except for comic books, 3D pornographic magazines, "good old confessions" and trade journals. All other printed material is deemed too offensive to someone. So much in-fighting in society because everyone claiming something offends them. So to make everyone happy, the offensive materials are removed. Because of the year this was written (1953) Ray Bradbury could have not envisioned the internet. If he had, it would have been heavily censored also. In 1953 ideas and knowledge were shared through print as they had been for hundreds of years.According to the book, the people wanted the offensive materials removed. Because everyone is offended by something then everything is offensive, it must all be destroyed. For me the novel rings true about how easily people are offended by another person's ideas, thoughts, actions, beliefs. In the story those things are still allowed (they can't control what you think), but without being able to write them down ideas and thoughts die pretty fast.Ultimately the story is about freedom and not being so judgmental of others lest ye be judged. If you look around today, 11/4/2017, this story has never been more relevant. We have protests and attacks in the streets daily based on ideals and beliefs that clash with others. These clashes occur, rather than people going their separate ways and understanding that the beliefs and ideals of others are just as legitimate as their own. Some groups would rather have a scorched earth policy and destroy everything they hold dear, as long as the other side loses everything as well.

The author of Fahrenheit 451 is Ray Bradbury. He has written several other books including The Illustrated Man, A Sound of Thunder, and Dark Carnival. This book is considered to be fiction. The title fits in with the book because 451 Fahrenheit is the temperature at which the books burn at. I believe it adequately encapsulate the message of the text because the whole story is revolved around burning all the books in the town. The author does a very good job at setting up a table of contexts for you. I would say the book is arranged in sections because there is only three. There are ten characters in the story; their names are Guy Montag, Mildred Montag, Captain Beatty, Professor Faber, Clarisse McClellan, Granger, Mrs. Phelps, Mrs. Bowles, Stoneman and Black. The main characters are Guy Montag, Mildred Montag, Beatty, and Faber. The main idea of this story is Guy Montag tries to explain to everyone and his fire chief that books are useful and they shouldn't be burning them, but to be reading them. Guy Montag and Professor Faber try to come up with a plan to overthrow the status quo of books being illegal. Montag only has 24 hours to be able to read any book and then after that he has to return them back to Captain Beatty. I think this is very different from any other book we would read because normally you don’t see reading books as a negative thing. Most people would write about how people need to get up and go enjoy nature or books rather than sitting inside watching television. I agree with Guy Montag for standing up for what he believes in. I think the tragic accident with the seventeen year old girl who thought books were important really got his attention. A huge surprise happens when Guy’s own wife calls the police on him to be arrested for having books in their house. Mrs. Montag gets in a cab with her suitcase and leaves. While Mr. Montag is left to burn his own house down and all of the copies he made of the books. Captain Beatty tries to attain him by sticking him with anesthetic but he destroys the machine in the fire and escapes with some copies. Montag was able to make it downstream and ran into a group called “renegade intellectuals” this group of individuals also have a love for books. They watch the war that was created from afar and see everything get destroyed with bombs. The group moves on and tries to find some civilization to rebuild a community with them. This book was very interesting to read because of how different it was. I would recommend this book to someone else just have a good read. Fahrenheit 451 was published by Ballantine in 1953. A good compilation of Dr Fung's online information regarding obesity, diabetes, insulin resistance and the physiological effects of fasting. Not much of a 'guide' to implementing the fasting protocols. Expected a detailed guide/roadmap for each of the fasting protocols, relative to various health issues and goals.

I am a health care professional. I have been reading about intermittent fasting and Dr. Jason Fung for quite some time. After a rather lackluster go with the 5:2 regimen, I was weary. But then I talked to a friend who said it is legit and to try eating between a 12 and 8 pm window. The biggest hurdle was psychological by far. So I did it. And it was easy. I read The Obesity Code first and just had to read this one. This one was the favorite of the two. I loved the testimonials. I loved the before and after test results, the science and I loved how he laid out what the rules are and several different ways that you can incorporate fasting into your life. I am convinced this is what is needed to reverse chronic disease and diabetes. I don't have much weight to lose, but I lost over 15 pounds so far. I am a foodie and wine lover so when I say I love food, I love food. And this was easier than anything I've ever tried. I started with an eight hour window and consistently lost two pounds a week. Then I started condensing it into a smaller window and then tried a 24 hour window. At work, this is easy. Did I mention it was easy? When you see the results on the scale, it does motivate you to keep going (assuming you aren't eating complete processed crap when you do eat).. I just went on vacation and fasted for four days after I returned. I ate (and drank) to my heart's content on vacation and four days later I weigh less than when I left. You feast and then you fast.Every time I tell someone about this, their first response is that there is no way they could do it. Stop the excuses!!!! If you want to lose weight, get healthy and fit into those clothes that you can't fit into anymore, do this. Try it. You have absolutely nothing to lose. It truly makes your life easier and it's free to not eat. We are just not meant to eat all the time.

Wow, I found the magic button for weight loss. After having limited success with the whole field of dieting options I stumbled across a talk on youtube by Dr Jason Fung talking about fasting. After the video I searched and ended up buying the audio book and the hard copy. The concept initially terrified me for some reason and when talking to friends who fasted I just shook my head and though there is no way I could do that. One of the fasting approaches recommended however seemed pretty easy. Have dinner and fast for 24 hours, having dinner the next day. I have done that accidentally at times! Well after a 6 days of doing this, I lost 10 lbs (40 to go) and realized that what I thought was breakfast or lunchtime hunger was just my body reminding me of a long held habit of eating I have had. It is incredible that over such a short fast you can turn off insulin based fat storage, and start burning fat. A side benefit is that increased metal clarity occurs fairly quickly and offers additional incentive to fast. Also my moderately elevate blood pressure is getting back to normal. Leads me to think that we have a obesity problem in the country because people eat 3 meals a day and insulin based fat storage never turns off. This is another area where the industrial food business exploits us in their marketing and so called guidelines. I am now convinced there is absolutely no need for 3 meals a day.Now the book recommends starting out the 24 hr fasting for a couple of days per week. I have decided to do it 5 or 6 times per week. I am pretty confident I can now get to any weight I want. I think the book is important in that it helps you break long held thoughts and misconceptions about eating and going without food. It also discusses other lengths of fasts that can range from 36 hour to weeks. It is so flexible you can do it anytime. And if I am fasting one day, and my friends invite me over for breakfast, or lunch no problem I will forget about fasting that day or have breakfast, but forget about lunch. In my opinion most people who have access to food have never experienced hunger, just mealtime urges. These urges are easy to identify and ignore after a few days (at least for me).I listened to the audio book first and then used the book for reinforcement for changing my thinking. There is quite a bit of repetition but this was necessary for me to truly break long held conventional thinking.Basically you are eating less food when only eating once per day. By having a long break between meals you body has time to get into fat burning mode. So while it seems like a magic button, it is not magic at all. You just have to forget about everything you have ever been taught or thought you knew about eating. This book is a great tool to change habits and conventional thinking.I will try to come back after I reach my goal weight and give an update. But I have no doubt that this is the solution that will allow me to control my weight to whatever level I choose. Read the book. It will change your life!

Treasury of Egyptian Mythology: Classic Stories of Gods, Goddesses, Monsters & Mortals (National Geographic Kids), by Donna Jo Napoli

From Booklist

Accomplished children’s author Napoli has her finger on the pulse of what young people want to read, and Egypt, with its mummies, pharaohs, and pyramids, is a perennial favorite. Yet Egyptian mythology remains somewhat ignored, making the content of this book, while familiar, feel quite fresh. It begins with a brief introduction to the genesis of Egyptian culture and a primer on its glyphs and naming conventions. Creation stories and enmeshed tales of a panoply of gods are told in a highly stylized way. (An illustrated cast of characters in the back matter clarifies the confusing litany of deities.) Balit’s Egyptian-styled illustrations are spectacular and given a proper sandstone-and-tile border. Egyptian mythology is not nearly as common as its Greek and Roman counterparts, but is every bit as engaging, lyrical, and reflective of the cultural beliefs of the civilization in which it finds its origins. This hefty compendium should offer something new for the most ardent mythology fans. Grades 5-8. --Erin Anderson

#21,940 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I purchased this book as part of a study requested by my 3rd grader for homeschooling. We read this book together, and I'm glad we do, because I am learning right along with her. The way the book is written is really cool. It is written like a story, but yet broken into sections of the different Gods/Goddesses. It is fun to read the Egyptian Myths of creation, and also learn about each deity individually. Since this book was suggested when I was searching for Egyptian Mythology for kids, I assumed it would be written for kids to read themselves. However, the way it is written is a bit too advanced for a grade school-aged child to read on his/her own. There are some advanced concepts and language used that I often have to describe to my daughter. That aside, we both enjoy this book. It is a beautiful hard cover, with many pictures and descriptions. It is most definitely not a one-time read for us, either. We will continue to enjoy this book in future studies, as well.

I am a 7th grade language arts teacher and I could not wait for this book to arrive. I already own Napoli's Treasury of Greek Mythology, and her Egyptian storybook is equally as wonderful as the Greek one. Napoli writes with such a compelling sense of voice that readers are pulled into the stories. Egyptian mythology is complicated, especially to young readers, but Napoli is a masterful storyteller and she is able to create such beautiful, accessible stories from a complex, ancient set of stories. She has clearly done her research, as there is a really helpful section explaining information such as the origins of names, the variations of details over time and her decision process as she wrote, how the Greeks influenced the stories and names. The stories also have inset boxes with nonfiction information about details related to the stories -- funeral practices, mummification, hieroglyphs, building of pyramids, legally accepted practices at the time, desert life, etc). The illustrations are gorgeous. I would say this book is geared for middle school and above readers, but would be well suited for read-alouds with younger children. It's a must-have for anyone teaching about ancient Egyptian society and mythology. Love, love, LOVE this book!!!

This book is a great introduction to Egyptian mythology, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It includes different stories, each about a different god, that tell the story from the gods' point a view (meaning that the author "liked" what that particular god liked, and "hated" what that particular god hated in that chapter). The illustrations are beautiful, and only add to it. Unfortunately, the author added feelings and thoughts that weren't felt or thought in the original stories as the Egyptians told them, and only included stories about the most interesting or main gods; Ra and Tefnut (completely leaving out her brother Shu), Aset, Set, Usir, Nebet Hut, Heru Sa Aset, Inpu, Tehuti, Heru Wer, Hut Heru, Sekhmet, Nit, Khnum, Imhotep, Sobek, and Bastet (leaving out the other animal gods Maftet, Taweret, Hapu, and Heket). She also left out Nut and Geb, but that's fine as they never do anything (they're the sky and the earth), and Satet. And my final opinion: this is a great book that I highly recommend, and even though she left out quite a few gods, I think the ones she left out aren't completely needed. Also, the added feelings and thoughts give more life to the story, making it more engaging for older readers. I think that you'll love this book.

Simply LOVE IT! The binding, the artwork, the tales, the quality of the paper.. every detail of this book makes it wonderful! I was looking for a book like this since it's perfect for children. It makes it fun for them to read. The only thing is that some of the vocabulary is a bit advance so you will definitely need to read it to them.I bought also the Greek and Norse mythology and will definitely buy the Tales from the Arabian Night too.Click the button if this review helped you at all. :)

While I wish they used Egyptian rubrics for the artistic depictions, it does a good job of introducing Egyptian mythology without being overly graphic (for example, it doesn't say which of the pieces of Usir was missing). I love that they use the Egyptian names instead of the Greek, as well.

I used this book with a group of children ages 7-12 and they loved it. Beautifully illustrated.

Ordered this one based on the quality of the artwork. My mythology-obsessed 6th grader devoured it.

Beautiful book on the Mythology of Egypt, got it for my grandson and he loves it. The art work is captivating, the stories grab the kids attention.
