Review

'As a TEDx organizer, I'm focused on the result of our speakers' efforts: The Talk. But in this book, I could instead focus on Chloe's experience as she traveled toward the red circle. Her gift for expressing deep thoughts helped bring those weeks to life for me, and her struggles with insecurities and doubts put a lens on the challenges she faced before taking that first step onto the stage. Rarely do we meet people who are gifted communicators, both in creating well-crafted stories and possessing the poise necessary to present them in a high-stakes setting. Chloe's insight into the turmoil within a teenager's psyche is immensely readable.' X (Mark Sylvester, executive producer, TEDxSantaBarbara)'Chloe Howard is a true world changer. There is nothing more inspiring than someone who harnesses a painful experience for good. And there is no better example of that transformational spirit than Chloe. Being lucky enough to witness Chloe's meeting with Bono and see the incredible good she's done with that inspiration since inspires me to be braver in fighting for good, and I believe Stand Beautiful will do that for you as well.'XX (Matthew Pohlson, cofounder, Omaze)'Chloe's story Stand Beautiful is a contemporary, vulnerable account of personal experience, empathy, and evangelism that serves as an inspiring reminder that we are all unique, broken, and imperfect; yet God unconditionally sees us, accepts us, and loves us. It's a beautiful testimony of trust, transformation, and triumph--in Jesus.' (Brian M. Van Hall, FACHE COO, CURE International)'Wow. I'm impressed. And I don't say this lightly. Chloe's book is incredible. The strength this seventeen-year-old shares while in the midst of bullying is appropriate not only for teens but for adults who experience tough battles in life. We all get knocked down, but Chloe's resolve, tenacity, and solidity through the worst times in her life are an encouragement to all of us! Again: WOW.' X (Dr. Susie Shellenberger, speaker and writer)'Like Emily Doe, Chloe Howard transformed her victimhood into a superpower. These remarkable young women share the gift of inspiration. Being the victim of a crime can make you feel mute and powerless. But Chloe uses her strength, her spirituality, and her clear, powerful voice to call out to those who have suffered bullying. Chloe's ode to finding self-worth is an important message for anyone who has felt the sting of self-doubt or the humiliation of harassment: Stand Beautiful.' X (Jeff Rosen, Santa Clara County District Attorney)'Like Emily Doe, Chloe Howard transformed her victimhood into a superpower. These remarkable young women share the gift of inspiration. Being the victim of a crime can make you feel mute and powerless. But Chloe uses her strength, her spirituality, and her clear, powerful voice to call out to those who have suffered bullying. Chloe's ode to finding self-worth is an important message for anyone who has felt the sting of self-doubt or the humiliation of harassment: Stand Beautiful.' (Alaleh Kianerci, Santa Clara County Prosecutor of the Brock Turner Stanford sexual assault case)'I've been working with teenagers for more than thirty-five years; and while there are many reasons I continue, one of my top reasons is how hopeful I continue to find them to be. Reading a story like Chloe's could be discouraging if you focus on the problems it reveals. But, ultimately, it's a story of overcoming, a story of redemption, a story of passion to change the world--and we all need more of that and hellip; I know I do.' XX (Doug Fields, founder of Download Youth Ministry and author of Purpose Driven Youth Ministry)'Chloe's powerful reflection of her abuse at the hands of young bullies and the lessons she has learned on her journey make Stand Beautiful a gift of hope to anyone who has faced humiliation and wondered if any good could ever come from it. It's a gripping story with a strong message for anyone who wants to rise above the spirit of darkness in our world today and bring hope that we can do better.' (Mark Matlock, president of WisdomWorks and author of Faith for Exiles and Living a Life That Matters)'Think of a quilt, a homemade-with-love-kind of blanket with all the different squares. Got it? Now, on those squares, write the repeated words provision, protection, meaning, and belonging. These are the four basic desires of us, as humans, that are all woven together like a quilt in this quest for our humanity. The squares of us intertwine to create a beautiful picture through us, but only one square at a time. However, every once in a while, I hear a story, meet a human, that brings us beyond our own pictures and lets us look upon the whole tapestry that is humanity at one time. Chloe's story will cover you with the common threads of humanity, give you a bigger picture of your own story, and challenge you to stand beautiful in your own square of this beautiful thing called life. This is not a book, but a vision.' XX (Eric Samuel Timm, orator, artist, and author of Static Jedi: The Art of Hearing God Through the Noise)'Stand Beautiful is a powerful and meaningful book that needs to be read, understood, and appreciated. The author, although young, has much to say, and there is much to be learned from her writing. I teach a class in Disabilities, and this is the kind of text that can be used to help students, as well as others, navigate the importance and complexities that surround this subject.' X (Jeff Banks, Ph.D., Professor of Teaching of Humanities and Teacher Education at Pepperdine University)

I know it is a cliché to say, "I couldn't put the book down," but that is how I felt reading Chloe's book (I have it on my Kindle). There were stories that brought tears and also insights she had that brought smiles. Chloe's honesty and willingness to share her innermost thoughts through some really tough times touched my heart. The depth of spiritual insight and empathy she openly writes about in STAND BEAUTIFUL is a challenge to all of us to stand up for what is right and to live in such a way as to be open to what others are going through....and to stand by them in their need. Her book also gives the strong message that we all are beautiful in our diversity and the ways that we are created differently. I recommend this book for all ages.

I budgeted enough time in my schedule to read two chapters a day. It fit beautifully into my weekly planner: start the first chapter Monday and finish the last Friday. It was ordered and symmetric, as I much prefer. It's still Monday, shortly after noon, and I just finished the last chapter. Now my entire schedule is wrecked, in need of adjustment. And that is fitting. Because, as Chloe Howard shares in her authentically personal narrative, adjustment is something that we each may need to do on a regular basis. Each day offers us a choice to shed the burden of expectation, judgment, and powerlessness in favor of embracing our unique self, including our weirdness and abnormalities. This is a refreshing account of a young human who had to learn to fight and learn to love in order to begin to overcome the challenges, both internal and external, that clamored to define her existence. This is not a new story. As Miss Howard describes in her book, it is something most everyone experiences. But the specificity and candor with which Miss Howard shares her tumultuous adventure gives the reader an illuminating insight into her individual struggles while offering a glimpse of the more universal threads that connect us all. Her message provides to us a spiritual buoyancy.I was concerned that Stand Beautiful might veer toward becoming a sermon, but it reads much more as an invitation. Miss Howard places herself firmly in the camp of a learner, one who is not here to give answers but to share stories and urge us to radically accept ourselves as we are. And that is a welcome message. Though, on a couple of occasions, I lost my place in the chronology of events, the authenticity of the prose quickly drew me back in to the moment. This is a truly enjoyable read.

I was hooked even before I finished reading the introduction! Chloe is an amazing teenager who was bullied like so many other kids… however, she managed gracefully to channel her anger and brokenness in a positive way to help change the way she looks at herself and encourages others to do the same. She challenges kids to “Stand Beautiful” just the way God created them: PERFECTLY IMPERFECT. As a mom of two boys, I have seen how mean kids can be to their peers. I’ve watched my son be bullied by his “friends” whether it be verbal, physical or psychological. Nothing is more heartbreaking than to see your kids suffer. The infamous “13 Reasons Why” book/Netflix series also talks about the effects of teen bullying, but the end result of her suffering is suicide. Chloe talks about being empowered and finding her strength through her family, music and God. If you know of anyone suffering at the hands of teen bullying, this book will bring them hope, comfort and encouragement!! #StandBeautiful #StandStrong #StandAmazlinglyPerfectlyImperfectÂ

Congratulations Chloe Howard for sharing your inspiring story and encouraging others to Stand Beautiful!I've known Chloe's story her whole life - having known her mom Lori since she was in college. I knew about her operations, her heartbreak after being bullied at a "Christian" High School, her amazement at Dad Dane's luck winning a meeting with Bono from U2, and all the joy that came out of that meant-to-be introduction - then seeing Chloe soar as she took her story to the other side of the world in meeting others born with a club foot - and then sharing her story in a book to reach and inspire even more young adults and grownups. I loved hearing Chloe's voice throughout this very well-written book (especially including the #ChloeHashtags), and I hope many others read this book to learn more about how important it is for us all to #StandBeautiful. The story and outcomes are heavy on her Christian faith, but it is her story, and I can't fault her for her steadfastness and faith. It is not preachy - just a matter of fact from her perspective. Highly recommended to all needing a beautiful story of inspiration and faith.

I picked this us as a way to share with my children about body security, how to deal with unexpected assaults on our security and about bullying. I found it interesting that the author felt that a true, unpressured apology would have gone a long way in helping her to heal. I think it's great she started a foundation to address this issue. I especially appreciated her new understanding that those in charge don't always do what's right- and often that's related to money and status. (bullying did not end after reporting the assault).

This is the story of brokenness and hurt being transformed into hope and love by an incredible teenage girl. It is a message for everyone, told with clarity and honesty; it is real and courageous. I couldn't put it down and I recommend it highly. You will fall in love with Chloe as she details the ups and downs of an unbelievably difficult journey and is now on a mission to help others to believe in themselves and "Stand Beautiful

This is a great, engaging story with a powerful message that reminded me of books written by David Gregory titled Dinner with a Perfect Stranger, Day with a Perfect Stranger just to name a few.As I read this fun, moving story I imagined the adventure was like the Twilight Zone meets the Matrix as a baggage handler gives each of his customers a choice. One, they can keep their baggage - let’s call it the blue pill choice. The bag will stay just as heavy as it’s always been. Like taking the blue pill in the Matrix, “the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe.” (quote from Wikipedia) – You are secure and comforted and live in a blissful ignorance.OR Choice number two, you can deal with your baggage and walk in a new light. Just like if you were to take the red pill “You stay in wonderland and you can see how deep the rabbit hole goes. In the Matrix. “Neo learns everything that he has believed isn’t real and in order for him to know the truth about his world, he has to make a choice. Same as these characters.Three people have gotten their baggage mixed up at the airport. They go to an off-site baggage claim center that kind of looks like the white room in Maxtix, it's an unusual building where I think they enter the Twilight Zone, Wikipedia describes its “Is an unusual situation or mental state between reality and fantasy…”It’s the middle ground between the pit of man’s fears and the summit of his knowledge.” Readers and customers enter this magical zone. Each character is under a deadline and needs what’s in their luggage to go on with the next important stage of their lives. They didn’t have time to mess with anymore delays. They needed their luggage; and it had to be now.Gillian Short is first up to bat. Her sister Becky’s daughter is getting married. Gillian can’t help but be envious of her sister’s life. Then there’s David Hawke a man on a mission at his company’s headquarters to discuss how well his branch was doing. He hoped the news would be better than the drama in his marriage. It wasn't pretty. Especially after the ultimatum he gave his wife when he left.Next up is Michael Downer a high school grad on his way to Clarendon University trying to secure a football scholarship. He hoped to make his dad proud. Michael was there to please his dad, but his heart wasn't thrilled about it. His passion was art. He made an appointment to see the head of the art dept hoping he might get in that program and obtain the football scholarship too. Each one of these characters confront the baggage handler demanding their luggage be returned pronto. When they get their bags, the handler tells them to check it. Each discovers things they didn’t pack. They discover some surprising revelations that unnerve them. The baggage handler knows each customer intimately. Like the woman Jesus meets at the well. They were just as stunned by his revelations and what he is offers them.Gillian says to him, “What an odd choice of words. Don’t you usually collect your baggage?”“Yes, people usually collect their baggage, but They’d be better off if they dealt with it.”“Deal with” is exactly what we mean.”“Well, if you say so. They are just words.”The baggage handler shook his head…”Words have far more power than that.”Each of these people try to figure out what is happening to them in this crazy place where they are asked to deal with more than their luggage. They can go as deep as they want to OR not go anywhere at all. They have a choice. Quote, “What weights us down is not our baggage but the decision to keep carrying it.”This is a powerful story that will touch your heart in unexpected ways. You won’t stop thinking about these characters and the message of this book long after you read the last word. This is the first book I've read by this author it won't be the last. This would make a great book for your book club group. I highly recommend this book to everyone.Disclosure of Material Connection: I received a complimentary copy of this book from the Publisher. “People usually collect their baggage, but they’d be better off if they dealt with it.” Such is the philosophy of the Baggage Handler in David Rawlings’ parable. The book tells the story of three individuals who arrive at an unnamed airport on the same day. There is a hotheaded businessman coming to the city for a showdown meeting trying to save his job. There is the mother of three hoping to survive the days at her sister’s house before her niece’s wedding. There is a teenage boy visiting a university feeling the pressure of pursuing his father’s dream rather than chasing his own. When they arrive, each one mistakenly grabs the wrong suitcase off the baggage carousel, seeing as how so many look alike. In their attempt to get the right case, they encounter the mysterious Baggage Handler, who shows them that they packed more than clothes in their baggage, and it is slowing them down in ways they can’t imagine. Before they can leave, the Baggage Handler makes them deal with their issues. As the Baggage Handler explains, not everyone wants his help in dealing with their baggage.“Why don’t people want to be helped?”The Baggage Handler stared past Gillian, the sadness now flickering across his face. He gave a deep sigh. “Because dealing with baggage is hard. It requires effort or swallowing pride. Because some people are so used to carrying their baggage they don’t think they can exist without it. Because some people say they need time to deal with it, but that time never arrives. But overall, for most people, it’s because carrying baggage is just easier, despite the weight.”The book is a very clever, well written parable. While it is an easy, quick read, it is one that will cause you to think and consider what baggage you might be carrying. The author includes a number of questions in the back that will help you ponder the meaning of the book.Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from the publisher through the BookLook Bloggers book review bloggers program. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.

I read this book several times to my class of 5th graders every year- because I feel like it really speaks a lot about life. I work in a Title I school, where we are really focusing on getting all of our students to succeed- via whatever path they choose after high school. Many of our children had never been out of the county before this year, when we took them on a field trip across the state to a zoo. I feel like this book not only encourages them, but also kind of gives them a heads up of the reality of "later life". Sometimes you aren't on top of the world, and you do get lost, and you do have to keep going to try to get out of your rut. And you don't want to be caught with the people who are just "waiting around"...we want them to be proactive and do something about it. I save up all year and purchase each of my students a copy and write a note to them individually, so that they know that they have someone who is in their corner, really pushing for them. That being said, I also read this to my own small children- because they just really enjoy the story, and all of the pictures.

Classic Dr. Seuss story. What more needs to be said?We purchased one copy for each of our kids. We have their coaches, teachers, etc. sign the book after each season with a little message. We plan to give them the books when they graduate from high school. What's really neat is they are 6 and 11 and have no clue we have been doing this. Hopefully we can keep that up and it makes a nice surprise and keepsake for them.

I gave this book to my stepchildren when they graduated from college. I read it myself in my 30s because I was a freelance writer, and this simple book helped me gather the courage to open myself to all the possibilities. I had a very successful career as a freelance writer of only non-fiction. In my retirement, I need to read this again as I'm now writing and indie publishing serious mid-grade/young adult fiction as Pleasant Oliver and once again, I need its boost of enthusiasm and courage for all the wonderful possibilities and opportunities that are going to come my way! In Spring 2018, I will give it my great nephew as he graduates from high school, and in later years, I will give it my other great nieces and nephews when they graduate from high school--maybe again when they graduate from college!

I bought two copies of this book for my children. Once they complete a grade in school, I will have their teachers sign it, and I will give them the book with notes from all their teachers on the day they graduate. Granted, I stole this idea from facebook, but it's so cute and Doctor Suess is such a great author.I have read it to them once and will read it to them every year before school starts. It's an adorable and inspirational book to remind them to keep pushing forward. Dr. Suess was the first author I ever read (The Foot Book, to be exact) and I while I have seen this one all over the internet, I had never read it before I bought it for my kids. The product itself came to me in two days, I have Prime, and there were a few nicks on the corners of the book. But I wouldn't say they're overly damaged or whatnot. Just don't expect the product to come in perfect condition. If you're going to steal my idea, the one I stole that is, I recommend storing the books in air tight bags in between readings and having them signed.

I paid nearly $20 for the hardcover book and then paid to import it to Ecuador. Wow am I upset that the publisher printed the words and pages the opposite direction of the cover. For $20 in the kindle age there really is no excuse for a publisher that sells thousands and thousands of copies to product work like this. I have read others complaining about the same issue. You need to check your quality control and be prepared to give a full refund when this happens. Then again, how hard is it to open a book and check it before you sell it???? Really really really annoying and is VERY upsetting since the taxes and shipping to import were more than the messed up book!!!!! GGGRRRrrrrrrrr Dr. Suess.

We got 2 of these for our son and daughter's teachers to sign as they grow up (to give them when they graduate). We're also writing letters to put within the pages over the years. The books are of great quality and should stand the test of time. I've also seen them used as 'advice books' where guests at graduation parties write little bits of advice for the graduates.

What is there to say about this book that hasn't already been said?! It makes a great Graduation gift (I bought 8 of them on Amazon for HALF of the list price!) and is a timeless classic. This is the exact same quality, hardcover book (with dustcover!) but at half the price. Thanks, Amazon!

As described, wonderful book. I got a copy for high school graduation and have decided to get my toddler a copy and have his teachers and therapist's write little notes overy the years and give to him at his graduation. He has severe autism and I want him to be able to look back at all of the people he may not remember, but they helped get him where he's going.
