This book was written by two professors at Cambridge University, who are also founders of the CEDAR Company, which is on the leading edge of audio restoration technology. The book consisely summarizes several of the audio restoration ideas developed by the authors that have been published in various journals. The book focuses on Bayesian analysis as a means for determining the most probable nature of audio defects (clicks, pitch variations and so forth) based on observed, corrupted data. Bayesian inference is also used to find maximum a posteriori characteristics of the underlying, uncorrupted signal.Those interested in restoring old phonograph and cylinder recordings will find the book very interesting, should one want to understand and develop audio restoration software.The book is very well-written and typeset, unlike many contemporary technical books. It uses vector and matrix notation for most formulae, which is welcome to those familiar with matlab. There is a very good list of references.Many of the priniciples discussed require a good knowledge of statistical signal processing by the reader. (Fortunately a new book "Computational Statistics Handbook with Matlab" was just published and should fill some gaps.)The book comes with an audio CDROM that illustrates several of the techniques discussed in the book. The CD itself is effectively an advertisement for their CEDAR sound processing systems, as the CD has clips with varying levels of processing applied, including the full CEDAR proprietary system. The CD contains the original source material as wav files, so researchers can use them to benchmark their algorithms against the commercial CEDAR system.I find it disappointing that the authors did not include matlab code to better illustrate their concepts. But then, the authors caution that some of the algorithmic details embodied in their restoration software are not published "for reasons of commercial secrecy."[As an interesting side-note, one other founder of CEDAR, S. Vaseghi, has published a book on noise reduction and audio restoration. The publisher's advertisement said it came with matlab code. This is not the case. I contacted the publisher and was told (three months later) that the matlab reference was an oversight. Why the secrecy?]In summary, Digital Audio Restoration is an excellent book by two of the world's leading researchers in this area. I would have given it a five-star rating if it had matlab (or C) reference code. An intrepid researcher could sift through IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing and ICASSP proceedings and glean much of what's in this book; thus matlab examples would have been a welcome addition. Still, there's no better book to my knowledge in the area of audio restoration.

This is THE service manual for these cars, from the days when cars were simple enough to put pretty much everything in a single hardback book. If you own a Beetle, you need a copy (If you don't want to work on your own car, what are you doing with an air-cooled VW?). I bought this for my 16 year old son when he acquired his '74 Beetle. He knows a bit about cars and tools, and this is his starting place for anything he needs to do to improve and maintain a car built 22 years before he was born. It doesn't however, tell you everything. There's not a lot of information about the body, for example how to remove and repair a window regulator. But it's a starting place, and as the new owner of an old car that's been alternately well- and poorly-maintained by different owners, this book has allowed him to unravel twisted wiring mistakes and restore his Beetle to something close to it's original form.

I first bought this book in 1982 and have used it since then to do simple repairs (since I don't have access to a lot of specialized tools) and diagnose problems--it is the book to have to understand what makes your VW tick. Based on some of the reviews here, I was under the impression that it had been updated and expanded so I purchased the newer edition. Other than moving the color wiring diagrams to the back of the book, I can't find anything that has been updated. So, if you don't have a copy and have a classic Beetle or Karmann Ghia, you need this. If you have an earlier edition, you should purchase this only if you want an extra copy.

The Bible for anyone that owns a VW, because unless you're loaded and can pay someone to fix all of the myriad things that are gonna need fixing, you need this to show you how. There are some things not covered in great detail in this, a Haynes manual helps along with sites like The Samba.

I needed this manual to restore a 1974 Super Beetle. In most instances it has helped. The electrical schematics on the 72 thru 74 beetles are harder to read than the earlier models. The earlier schematics helped locate various connectors and terminations. Like a lot of manuals of this type the instructions are sometimes not helpful. Example: remove such-and-such part. It would be helpful to explain in more detail, like remove the hidden bolt or explain the way to remove a clip that was obviously designed by an engineer working on a secret project.

We haven't completely dived into any major repairs, but have referenced this book for information about fixing the horn, fixing electrical wiring that's been noodled around with and tune-up specs, etc... So far it has provided enough detail, that is easily understood. It does seem to assume some prior vehicle mechanical knowledge or experience. My only complaint has been the lack of an index....sometimes it's difficult to locate your topic. The book is divided into 8-9 sections, each section has a table of contents....but when you're looking for something small, you have to guess which category it might fall into -- then read the table of contents to see which subheading it might be under...and if you don't see it in the tables of contents, you have to scan the sections.

Got a beetle? Then buy this manual. The wiring diagrams alone are worth the price of the whole book.

This is exactly what the husband ordered and he loves it! Great manual with all the details for him to maintain his 1972 Volkswagon Superbeetle. He is one happy camper now and couldn't be more pleased. Shoot, you'd think it was a novel as he is reading it from cover to cover. Go figure! Nice big volume, big type lettering, easy to read and follow along. Very good manual and a must for all those VW enthusiasts who like to DIY.
