Could not put this book down. I have lived in the heart of the Old South Side chronicled in this book for many many years.I enjoyed seeing photos about people and buildings and businesses I remembered (and some that I had forgotten). This book is sure thorough--I don't think they missed any aspect of my culturally rich neighborhood! So many people deserve credit for the growth and development of our neighborhood, I'm glad this book was written so they got the credit they deserve! The research done for this study is spot-on; the principals of Urban Anthropology who authored this book are very professional people who have made a career of studying ethnicities and educating the rest of us so that we better understand and appreciate our neighbors!
More childhood memories in print that I can pass down to my daughter. Thank you Amazon for opportunity to receive this.
The book is not what was expected.
My family collects and restores old farm tractors. One our recent completed restorations was a 1947 Internatiional Harvester Model W-9 tractor. Although the International Harvester Company is most famous for the development of the "tricycle" style "Farmall" tractors of the 1920s through the 1950s, the Model W-9 is not a trycycle style tractor. The W-9 is a "four-wheel" or "standard" style of tractor. This means that the tractor was not designed for the cultivation of row-crops. Because row crops were grown largely in the Corn Belt of the Midwest of the United States, the Model W-9 was not generally found in the Midwest. Rather it wsa the tricycle style tractors, like the Farmall tractors, that were found in the Midwest. The W-9 and other large standard four wheel tractors were generally found out on the open fields of the Great Plains region of the United States and Canada where horizon to horizon farming was practiced and usually wheat and other other grain crops were grown and hardly any row crops were grown. While the International Harvester Company manufactured its small Farmall tractors at the Chicago Works factory located at 24th Street and Western Street in Chicago, Illinois and manufactured its larger Farmall tractors at the "Tractor Works" factory in Moline, Illinois, the large four wheel standard International tractors were manufactured at the "Milwaukee Works" at 1714 Bruce Street on the South Side of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Accordingly, the Polish and other slavic groups that settled on the South side of Milwaukee came to make up a large part of the work force at the Milwaukee Works. This book, by Jill Florence Lackey, is the story of the Polish neighborhood that was home to the families of the work force that was employed at the Milwaukee Works and was employed at the other foundries and heavy industry factories that used to be located in the Bruce Street area of Milwaukee. Recently, I made a trip with the truck and trailer hauling the newly painted Model W-9 from West Virginia back to Minnesota and plotted a route up into Michigan to the city of Ludington, Michigan, where we boarded the ferry and crossed Lake Michigan. Landing at Manitowac, Wisconsin, we drove south to Milwaukee and the location of the old Milwaukee Works factory where the W-9 had been built some 67 years ago. Driving through the South Side neighborhood I saw architectural style of the houses, stores and churches that are shown and described in this book. Indeed I saw some of the same strucres that are actually pictured in this book. Although the old Milwaukee works has long since been torn down, the neighborhood surrounding the site of the old factory still retains the way it must have looked in 1947 when the W-9 had first rolled off the assembly line ar the Milwaukee Works.
The South Side neighborhood is an incredibly diverse area in the large urban city of Milwaukee. It represents an extensive Latin population, followed by Polish and Indian groups, among many others. Polish groups made up a large portion of this neighborhood in the past starting in the 1870's and have left a significant visual signature on the landscape. Before I read this book, I was not aware of just how influential the Polish were in this area. The text presents detailed information regarding the beautiful Polish architecture and monuments, as well as significant families, businesses and celebrations of each ethnic group. I was especially appreciative of the writing style, in that this information is available to the general public as well as academia. The book is filled with images of the past, many from the university in which I attend (University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee). Each image alone represented a thousand words or more. Each photo told a necessary story, which I truly enjoyed. Most importantly, after reading this book, my views and perspectives of Milwaukee's south side had completely changed. It has allowed me to see the neighborhood under a new light that I never knew existed.
