This book is very well done, similar to the painterly watercolor books in many ways. The front and back covers fold out so they can be used to seperate the pages when coloring. The insides of the covers include full colored completed examples of the images that are included. There are 14 full color glossy pages in front. Only two of these cover tools and basic techniques (which i think is great since once you have in depth info on that you don’t need to have it rehashed in every book you buy). Then there are 8 pages on specifics, including shadowing and highlights and so on, 2 pages for each of these topics; painting flowers, painting white flowers, painting pattern and texture and painting seeds and shiny objects. These are great with detailed illustrations for the steps. Then there are 8 pages of color charts showing the colors used in each of the completed examples of the images. Then there are 15 coloring pages on fairly heavy watercolor paper but the pages aren’t perforated . The paper seems to be cold pressed, but has an almost a linear texture unlike the random texture I have been used to (this is the second coloring book I have noticed this in, so maybe I just have been using cheap or weird paper?) The images are in a fairly pale gray color and are in a very formal botanical style. Perhaps because of the style the pages aren’t really filled but have a lot of white space.
There are a lot of Botanical painting and drawing books out there, but this on actually has the guides printed on high quality paper. I would suggest practicing color mixing and techniques on separate papers before jumping in. My only problem is choosing a flower, because they are all gorgeous. If you desire to paint realistic watercolor flowers and are interested in botanical painting, you’ll love this book.
The pictures are beautifully drawn in light gray lines on student grade hot press watercolor paper. This paper gave meno problems ( no excess warping or pilling) as long as I used a light touch and did not overdo the water (which is what I would do on artist quality paper). Color versions of each drawing were included as reference as were some simple instructions and the color palette. I bought this pad to practice botanical watercolor techniques and it served the purpose.
Received this book today. I flipped through the book and I’m so excited to begin painting in the book. A very unique watercolor instructional book. Since I’m a beginner in watercolors this book should be fun.
