John Fowler is probably the designer who most impacted English country style as we know it today. He would go to the stately English homes and find old fabrics or traces of wallpaper and have them reprinted for us to enjoy years later. One pattern he found in the interior of a carriage!Colefax & Fowler's heritage author-architect-designer Chester Jones describes as: "a blending of style, colour and pattern, lightly handled and painterly in approach. Floral chintzes are balanced by plain cottons, silks and the occasional stamped velvet. Table lamps with shades of pleated silk and card diffuse the light; English furniture, four-square and sensible, is relieved by the delicacy of a French piece. Whether painted or veneered, the furniture is kept mostly light in tone. Often an ugly colour is introduced, such as a faded black or drab, to give counterpoint to colours that are sweet and clean. The occasional highlight of distressed giltwood and the warm patina of ancient paint are all part of the grammar. The mood is then personalized by the addition of prettily painted creamware, tole, pictures and prints; the fragrance and colour of flowers complete the decoration."This fabulous book is divided into three parts. You will wish they were all full page. These are classic, iconic English rooms which don't look dated. This book is a joy to read as much as to look at. It's a great balance of text and images. This is a book that any designer, or student of design history, who enjoys the prettiness and comfort of English style would enjoy having in their library. It's a delightful collection of images and information on the English design firm who is the source of English Country style as we know it today.

My local library recently culled its collection of decorating books to remove the old titles that were not being checked out — likely because patrons deemed their content to be dated. Had this book been available, it would likely have vanished from the shelf. In came popular decorators' releases showcasing their own projects — in many cases, sterile, perfect, monochromatic interiors that leave one thinking "look but do not touch." Though published in 1989, the content of this book is classic — based on the successful Colefax and Fowler approach — and therefore always in good taste. Based on some of the photos (not as crisp as in current releases, but still worthy of study), our cousins across the pond like their patterns — on rug, wallpaper and upholstery — and their clutter. Americans who prefer a more curated approach can still draw inspiration from the livable "humble elegance" that John Fowler espoused. If an English look appeals to you, it's a good reference for making wise decisions. Just having the book on display adds a certain tone to a room!

This is a lovely book giving in text and pictures the history of Colefax and Fowler, who EPITOMIZED the English cottage style of decorating. I most appreciate the design of their own homes, which were more modest and to my mind tasteful than their elaborate, expensive decorations of great historical houses.Strange, but many of the B&W photographs were done without lighting, so that details are difficult to ascertain -- without the captions, would be impossible. I'd like to see this book redone properly. However, most of the rooms/design schemes probably no longer exist. So it's a wonderful and probably irreplaceable historical record.The book itself was used and listed as "good" condition. It arrived with the corners of most pages glommed together by water, which I would label "fair" condition at best. But the pages were entirely readable and viewable.

The grace and epitome of what we all have come to know and love as "English Country House Style". This book begins with the very beginning of Colefax and Fowler, and documents the evolution of "the look". Many wonderful color photos and sketches to refer to as well as beautifully written descriptions as to what makes this all work. While we may not be able to live in such grand houses, many of the concepts and designs work as well in contemporary and smaller settings. There is something for every one in this book, very desirable!!

The English have contributed much to design style. This is an homage to English Country style. For collectors of pure classic style, this is a good book. If you are looking for modern English style hints, it is lacking. Of course one would expect that from colfax and Fowler. Lots of flowers and happy clutter and formal furniture.

About the Author

Thomas Engel has taught chemistry for more than 20 years at the University of Washington, where he is currently Professor of Chemistry and Associate Chair for the Undergraduate Program. Professor Engel received his bachelor's and master's degrees in chemistry from the Johns Hopkins University, and his Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Chicago. He then spent 11 years as a researcher in Germany and Switzerland, in which time he received the Dr. rer. nat. habil. degree from the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich. In 1980, he left the IBM research laboratory in Zurich to become a faculty member at the University of Washington. Professor Engel's research interests are in the area of surface chemistry, and he has published more than 80 articles and book chapters in this field. He has received the Surface Chemistry or Colloids Award from the American Chemical Society and a Senior Humboldt Research Award from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, which has allowed him to establish collaborations with researchers in Germany. He is currently working together with European manufacturers of catalytic converters to improve their performance for diesel engines. Philip Reid has taught chemistry at the University of Washington since he joined the chemistry faculty in 1995. Professor Reid received his bachelor's degree from the University of Puget Sound in 1986, and his Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of California at Berkeley in 1992. He performed postdoctoral research at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, campus before moving to Washington. Professor Reid's research interests are in the areas of atmosphere chemistry, condensed-phase reaction dynamics, and nonlinear optical materials. He has published more than 70 articles in these fields. Professor Reid is the recipient of a CAREER award from the National Science Foundation, is a Cottrell Scholar of the Research Corporation, and is a Sloan fellow.

Engel's "Quantum Chemistry and Spectroscopy" is not the worst p-chem book I've looked through. Given the choice however (meaning if my professor did not require the text), I would likely have opted to use a more thorough text. Engel has created a great reference, with enough information to suffice on the go. If however you are trying to use this book as your primary source of literature, in an effort to gain a thorough understanding, be cautious. Throughout the text a number of assumptions are made, rather than simply reiterating previous formulations or blatantly stating the point trying to be made. Unless the reader is absolutely cognitive and has mastered all previous information, this is at times detrimental. The section on spectroscopy is actually quite useful (better than most other texts I referenced) and the math supplement in the appendix is very convenient. I suppose my professor chose this text for the very reason I stated earlier, to be used as a side reference, a supplement to never-ending in-class exercises (i.e. packets) that theoretically should have helped develop the fundamental concepts. Needless to say- I was forced to read another text from time to time for clarification.

First, I should add that quantum chemistry is difficult for anyone to understand. By default, quantum chemistry is supposed to not make sense. That being said, this textbook could still have been much better.The textbook does not explain any subject in any great detail. The bare minimum is said, and then the student is expected to work out the questions at the end of the chapter. Usually, in quantum chemistry, the questions can be solved without really understanding the concepts, which is not the case in many other subjects, since problems usually involve only mathematical manipulations of wave functions, etc. Questions, therefore, are usually not the problem. I am still trying to find a textbook that can help me ground the concepts in my head.

This book is very helpful to get a better grasp on the lecture material. I just wish my professor would follow it more closely

This book does well in covering quantum chemistry principles. I felt it had good practice problems. I would recommend the book.

This is a well-written, well-organized book which is a wealth of information about paddling on Maryland's Chesapeake. I particularly appreciated the maps and illustrations in the book; they made sure that my recent vacation was action packed and that I didn't overlook a thing! While all the information in the book that I used was correct, it was somewhat dated; things have changed a lot-for the better- in the local paddling scene, and the authors should consider a new edition.

This book was a great resource for going to the Chesapeake. We had a start location in mind but made the rest up as we went. Six different paddles in four locations.Made for a wonderful week. We had never been here and it laid out where to start and even some good restaurant options as well. We were camping so a little more of that information may have been helpful, but that is not what the title was about so no complaints here. An absolute must have if you plan a kayaking trip to anywhere on theChesapeake bay!

Although I have many beautifully designed "annotated" editions of classic literature, I often find to annotations to be primarily a distraction, and I am very selective about which ones I read. In this affordably priced annotated Flatland, however, the annotations add a whole new dimension (sorry) to the experience of this short book that has fascinated me since I was in school, decades ago. For those already familiar with the book, I recommend reading each chapter uninterrupted, then going back and reading all of the annotations before moving on to the next chapter. The annotations are fascinating and really help to put Flatland in the context of the intellectual discussions of the time in which it was written.

My favorite book. It affected my entire philosophy of life. I am not sure if anyone else got the same message that I did. But, I believe that we as 3D beings can be taken to a world where there is another variable that we see as a constant. Just as A square cannot see height as a variable, we cannot see time being variable. To us, it passes at a constant rate of one second per second, one minute per minute (unless you approach the speed of light, but that's a different circumstance.) Perhaps when we are free of our 3D confines (when we die) we can exist in the fourth dimension where time is variable. It makes perfect sense to me.

I love this addition. I agree with the reviewer that it is best to read just the text completely during the first read,to capture the story as it was first intended. Then go back and soak up all the great mathematical ,historical and philosophical insights the annotations provide. It will expand your imagination,no matter where land on the educational spectrum! Still can't believe I had not heard of it before. Jon Haidt mentioned it as one of his favorites in thebook "The Happiness Hypothesis".

Flatland is a novel originally published in 1884 by Edwin A. Abbott. It is told from the point of view of A. Square, that four-sided resident of the titular country. The first part of the book consists of a description of what it is like to live in a two-dimensional world. The second part concerns A. Square's encounter with a sphere and his subsequent "visions" of pointland, lineland and spaceland.The purpose of this novel is two-fold: to introduce the casual reader into the concepts of multi-dimensional spaces (i.e. what will become the concept of four dimensional space-time) and to provide social commentary on Victorian society. I cannot comment much on what he achieves in terms of opening the eyes of the Victorian reader to the ills of that society; however, I find his ability to illuminate the concepts of dimensionality extra-ordinary. As a math and physics teacher, I am always looking for ways to open my students' minds to visualizing what they are doing. Even after well over 100 years, few people have approached Abbott's clarity in helping people visualize the difference between different dimensions. One of the best examples: a square only "looks" like a square to someone who can see in three dimensions. A square itself, trapped in a plane, would see another square (or, indeed, any figure) only as a line. This leads to intriguing thoughts on what creatures who live in higher dimensions than our own see as they look at us.Of course, the story of Flatland alone is wonderful but Stewart's annotation and commentary take the book to another level. On nearly every page, Stewart offers insight and background into the text. Unable to resist the pun: he added another dimension to the book. Having read Flatland many years ago and enjoyed it, I felt I understood the book much better this time around with Stewart's help. Anyone with an interest in math and physics should not pass up the opportunity to read this edition of Flatland.

With the Alice in Wonderland books, the late 1800s seem to have been the time for really creative mathemetical writing.Although not as frequently read, Flatland, the Edwin Abbott Abbott story of a little square coming to understanding that higher dimensions do indeed exist outside his world is a delightful read. For those seeking to understand what life is like in other dimensions, Flatland is very comprehensible with clear writing and simple, easy to understand illustrations that help drive home Abbott's points.Originally written with many sly references to the then existing state of British culture, Abbott's invitation to try and understand higher dimensions was also an invitation to society of his time to try to re think its views on a myriad of issues...including its openness to women in education.In this way, Abbott converted viewing higher dimensions into both a mathematical and social challenge...points Stewart was sensitive to in his annotations and his own homage, Flatterland.Although other editions of this work exist, the annotated Flatland is the one to buy both because of its faithful reproduction of the original and its thought provoking and helpful footnotes that give the work broader meaning.

The core story of Flatland is certainly starting to show signs of its age, but Ian Stewart does a phenomenal job of reviving the relevance of Flatland and it's inhabitants. Stewart does an excellent job of providing both historical context as well as discussing how Abbott's ideas foreshadowed, predicted, or influenced modern mathematical developments. The mathematics and analogy Abbott and Stewart use are equally useful to the mathematically inept and the mathematically adept. Entertaining and educational.

Recounting a lot of that in the book makes this more than a handy guide to hot spots or meals—it's a model for how to really experience a place.Some of my favorite moments in the book were those prefaced by caveats like “If you are feeling adventurous…”. And the authors also periodically acknowledge the unease that foodies might have in a new place—and then they offer safe options and suggestions. As a vegetarian, I especially appreciated their insights into how to avoid meat even in meat-centric Argentina. It’s thoughtful touches like these that bode well for the series in general. I’m looking forward to what they write about Southeast Asia, their next destination.

Their love of the country and food and the journey really comes through.Experiencing culture through food is, to me, one of the best ways to really see the world and get to know a people and place. This guide is thorough and clear, and I am looking forward to using it to guide my own adventure!

It describes the foods and where each can be found, down to region and shop or market type. I also like the sections 'Unique produce', 'How to eat and shop like a local', and 'Unique culinary experiences', giving insight into the local food culture.I imagine the book is also great for reminiscing on a past trip to Argentina, as some foods are described in detail.So many useful tips and good food information!

The authors are unafraid to try different foods and really bring it to life for you in an honest way that brings it to life for you as if you were there. I've travelled to Buenos Aires several times and enjoyed many of the dishes the book describes, but I was surprised to read so much about the food native to other regions (so naturally, now I have to go back). Beyond that, the book details the people that currently help keep the cuisine fresh and innovative, while staying true to their roots.This book will be great if you love to learn about food, have been to Argentina and want to try something new, or are planning on going to go to Argentina and want to eat like a local and know where it all comes from (culturally and where it's sourced).Pro tip: Eat first before reading though, otherwise you'll find yourself with a hankering for asado!
