Review

"[Currid] describes the organic, informal, social networking side of the creative arts in a mixed tone of Rolling Stone new journalism and objective reporting that serves to advance her central thesis: that as an independent drive of an urban economy, the arts and its related industries should stop being viewed as the beautiful step-child of city environments."---Susan Gardner, Daily Kos"Not every PhD student blows her fellowship money at Barneys New York. But for the urban planner Elizabeth Currid, her passion for style led to some interesting statistics."---Anya Kamenetz, New York Times"Any discussion about New York City's economic well-being tends to start and end with one phrase: Wall Street. As the Street goes, we assume, so goes the city, which is why politicians will do almost anything to keep the brokerages and investment banks happy.... [In] The Warhol Economy the social scientist Elizabeth Currid argues that this fixation is misdirected, and that it has led us to neglect the city's most vital and distinctive economic sector: the culture industry, which, in Currid's definition, includes everything from fashion, art, and music to night clubs. In other words, it's SoHo and Chelsea, not Wall Street, that the politicians should really be thinking about. Of course, everyone knows that art and culture help make New York a great place to live. But Currid goes much further, showing that the culture industry creates tremendous economic value in its own right."---James Surowiecki, The New Yorker"Elizabeth Currid's argument in this intelligent and innovative book is that New York, and certain other great cities in particular periods, function as the Factory on a greater scale, and that social policy out to reflect that fact."---Roz Kaveney, Times Literary Supplement"In detailing the inner workings of New York's creative industries...urban planning PhD Currid gives readers an eagle-eyed look at the networking mechanics of the art-as-business crowd. Colorful description abounds, as do colorful characters." (Publishers Weekly)"Currid provides an interesting explanation of the transformation of New York City from bohemia to cultural economy as art, music, fashion, and design collided." (Business Economist)"A brilliant analysis of the social mechanisms by which creative individuals and the industries they populate drive New York's economy...Beyond Ms. Currid's reasoned analysis and careful exposition of fact, The Warhol Economy is simply a pleasure to read in a way that sociological studies never are. Engaging, gossipy without being trashy, and just plain fun, The Warhol Economy is social science with a downtown mentality, it points to significant realities in the generation of cultural capital that are, important, and ready for broadcast."---Christina Panas, Soho Journal"An exploration of how fashion, art, and music drive New York City, The Warhol Economy argues that the city's cultural resources contribute more to the economy than most policy makers realize or admit. Interviews with well-known bands, designers, artists, club owners, and writers underscore the value of cultural producers; an appendix's worth of hard numbers back them up."---Annie Fischer, Village Voice"Sweeping, gossipy, flawed and fun, Currid's book stands alone as a work equally obsessed with the 'location quotient' of a given industry and with Marc Jacobs, the designer....It is the job of the social scientist to take a banal observation--for example, that New York is full of artists and musicians who like to go out at night and all seem to know one another--and worry over it to the point that the obvious seems to fairly glow with complexity. Currid pulls this trick off nicely, and she throws in some amusing backstage anecdotes for extra cultural currency."---Carly Berwick, Bloomberg Muse"Currid takes the reader on a concise tour of New York's 150-year history of being a haven and incubator for artists while offering a healthy reminder for any city interested in sustaining a lively arts scene: culture drives economic growth."---Andrew Brink, CityView

"Elizabeth Currid's hip trip through New York's production of creative culture is a tour de force."--Quincy Jones, producer"I've uttered the words 'It just kind of happened' with a shrug hundreds of times when asked about the quick success of my band. Elizabeth Currid blows that lazy response to smithereens by showing the work behind 'word of mouth.' I think I'll have a better answer now."--Lee Sargent, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah"The old economy made deals over golf games and three-martini lunches. Creative New York organizes its networks around art openings, fashion shows, and nightlife. But these networks are a lot more than fun and games. They are deeply important to how new innovations are produced, how cities work to sustain creativity and turn it into commercial value. Cities drive our economies; creativity drives our cities. With her keen eye, sharp analysis, and detailed fieldwork, Elizabeth Currid shows us why and how. In The Warhol Economy, she has unlocked the best-kept secrets in New York."--Richard Florida, author of The Rise of the Creative Class"Elizabeth Currid's The Warhol Economy raises distinctive policy implications: namely, cities will get bigger payoffs by supporting milieu rather than museum. Laws that hurt the clubs are almost as bad as the rising rents that price-out the artists. Tax breaks to corporations make no sense whatever. Currid is more than plausible on all these issues."--Harvey Molotch, New York University"Elizabeth Currid has written a wonderful book. She shows that the arts and culture are not simply 'service industries.' Examining arts and culture in New York for the understanding they provide about deeper changes in our world, Currid addresses fundamental sociological issues while also engaging the general reader--with clarity, insight, humor, and passion. The reader feels taken along to the offices and nightclubs where some of the most creative people in New York gather."--Terry Clark, University of Chicago

Wonder why New York City is such a great town? Read this book, and you'll understand. The author explores why corporations choose NYC for their employees. I get it, and so should you.

A good read to get a general overview of the creative class in NYC

She is very knowledgable about her topic. But again, the fact that she completely takes out theater and dance out of artistic equation on New York really hurts the overall comprehension.

Elizabeth Currid’s Warhol Economy thoroughly explains the intricate concept of culture, art and consumption in New York City. Through personal narratives, qualitative data, and historical events, Currid allows readers to get a critical looking into a new economic paradigm in many cities across the nation. She identifies creative capital as the new urban economy, where class is determined by one’s ability to produce commodities and have them widely accepted as valuable. Borrowing the findings of many noted scholars, such as Richard Florida, Currid describes how a new creative class came to dominating New York’s “Downtown Scene” and contributed to a new cultural economy that had not been seen before.Currid’s writing method was simple. She would introduce each chapter with an anecdote, some from her own experiences living in Lower Manhattan, and others from events in history, such as the rise and fall of Jean-Michel Basquiat. In chapter one, for example, she recalls the life of Basquiat, explaining how his creativity in a changing urban economy took him from a artsy vagabond to a rich painter famous painter of his generation. Furthermore, she explains that cultural consumption around the time of Basquiat’s ascension was a new wave of urban economy, where factory and manufacturing in the city was passé. So, Basquiat’s fame, she argues was symptomatic of a changing economy where cultural products like then arts became a lucrative tool in attaining economic success. Currid was also making the argument that the place in which these cultural products were being produced and sold were crucial hubs that would perpetuate the new economic system.Throughout the book, Currid argues that Lower Manhattan: the Village, East Village, Lower East Side, and SoHo, were the centers of the new urban economy. She argues that creative people, such as artists, would flock to these centers in order to seek inspiration, social acceptance, a fun time, and a place to comfortably be “creative”. In the second chapter Currid provides another anecdote about the photographer, Maripol and how this photographer would look for the next “hot” style in fashion, not on the runway but in the Lower Manhattan dance clubs. Again, Currid explicitly identifies cultural capital as a driving force of creativity in the urban center, while referencing historical instances that validates her findings. Currid emphasizes her Maripol narrative by giving readers a brief history lesson in the Lower Manhattan art scene. Explaining that political and socialists sentiments were primarily printed in New York’s downtown in the early 20th century, Currid posits that writings of expression became an important commodity to the Lower Manhattan art culture. By bringing up the history of Lower Manhattan, Currid drives home the concept of place being a contributing factor in the creative consumer centers of the city.Another interest facet of Warhol Economy is in how it describes the city of New York as an exemplar and outlier from other formerly industrial cities in the United States. Currid makes it plain: New York is not like Detroit or Pittsburgh, and it is quite remarkably different because of its ability to rebound from crisis. Currid claims that New York was able to reinvent itself because of its “human capital”, where individuals engaged in professional services and less standardized production. In a nice way, she explains that New York’s capacity to export cultural products, such as media and film, are in essence leaps and bounds ahead of other formerly industrial cities. Currid intelligently sneaks in graphs to prove her point as well, showing that NYC reigned supreme as having had professional services at the highest percent of their workforce by the year 2000. Further, another graph she rolled out was one that basically proved the Big Apple to have 4 times the concentration of art than any other American City. Graphs proved to be a useful tool in presenting empirical data, as well as breaking up Currid’s sometime repetitive message of how superior New York was in the art scene compared to other American cities.Another important aspect of Currid’s work is her vivid description of the “Tastemaker”. Currid describes this creative sect as individuals who serve two large roles: trendsetter and trend consumer. Further, she considers the Tastemaker to be faceless, an unnamed women on the dance floor wearing an outfit off the beaten path, or a person who frequent the nightlife scene, looking for an open gallery, looking for a new experience. These creative Tastemakers are the ones who decide what culture is “cool” and when, they set the trends, and set the styles. Currid ties Tastemakers into her larger argument of creative consumption by explaining their presence as an important tool in networking and economic success in the art world. So without Tastemakers, there would be no Warhol Economy.Lastly the notion and age-old saying, “it’s not what you know, but who you know” is used by Currid in order to explain how artists find success from networks and not necessarily merit. She begins chapter 4 by telling a story of how she came to knowing famed clothing designer Marc Jacobs. She begins the tale by talking about being lost in Downtown, New York. She kindly asked a man where Bleeker Street was, looking to find one of Jacobs clothing boutiques. To her surprise, the man happened to be a good friend of Marc’s, and had the capacity to call up Marc to coordinate an interview between her and him for her book. These connections, Currid asserts, are ones that create and continue careers for artists and creative marketers. Being able to find those who can propel your career and offer advice or valuable contacts is the difference between success and mediocrity. In sum, in Warhol’s economy the idea-driven person wins. In Warhol’s economy the creative thinker, weird dresser, underground art-dealer wins. However, the opportunity to take advantage of the creative market depends on where a person is located and the time they find themselves in. It is a unique marriage of paradigm and opportunity. New York City served as a stage with which creative minds converged and hustled amid a time of huge money flow. Currid cleverly uses each chapter as an easel, painting a narrative of New York culture and social mobility.

Good book but a tad bit tedious. She enlightened me as to how the creative community is a vital economic consideration and not merely a luxurious by-product of economic conditions. The general purpose of the book is to introduce the reader to a different view of the creative community's role in economics, its origins, catalysts and catalysts of decline. She de-emphasizes the importance of public policy in breeding the necessary conditions while doing so.This is also valuable as a NYC travel guide, a lesson in economics, history and urban planning as well as an index of some of the most interesting names in the NYC creative community. That said, unless you were born yesterday or have never spent any time in a city, going to bars, listening to music, reading books and meeting people, some of this information will seem obvious and redundant. People meet people in clubs and bars, we all know that. You're more likely to run into people in a walking city than a driving city, obvious.I appreciate her thoroughness, but I think this book could have made drove home its excellent message in a book probably 2/3rds the length of this. A good book, but get the cliff notes.

If you're at all a fan of New York City, especially when defined as a cultural mecca, then this is a must read for different reasons than those that The Warhol Economy advertises. An extensive, heady gossip column gone delightfully awry, The Warhol Economy is a book completely infatuated with the city's culture and the industries lying behind it. Fellow New Yorkers and fans of the city and its artistic presence will not be disappointed, and even casual readers will get caught up in her name-dropping passion for the creative denizens of the Big Apple. However, if you're a fan of the artist Andy Warhol, you'll quickly see through the thin veil to realize the author is simply using the artist's name to move copies off the shelves a little more quickly. Very little knowledge or new wisdom involving Warhol is imparted. There is intrinsic value in the above truths, however. First of all, the name Warhol is synonymous with both Pop Art and New York, and, he himself would consider the mention high praise, thinking the concept as being "very pop." Secondly, while the author tends to ramble, loosely relating several familiar topics and famous people to the art and fashion scene of New York, through her chosen verbiage she inadvertently paints a very detailed portrait of the Manhattan collective groupthink. These thought processes are of great value in any timeframe, since as she even points out, "all business is done in New York." Thirdly, such a move to associate her work with Warhol was smart for business, which is really the biggest, if not the only lesson being a resident of New York will teach you.

Completely redundant in that she mentioned only a handful of New York City's avante-garde. The book is interesting but limited in its discussion of the subject. Apparently she thinks that Charles and Ray Eames are brothers and that the MMA is now the Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art. I wouldn't waste your time, if I were you.

Great stuff again from Nathan. Also, nice bonus that ”you should not over-engineer” section. Book was bit repetitive though. Could slice third off.

The author knows well the subject…! This book will help many aspiring sound engineers…!

I've been producing and mixing for years, and even with my experience, I found so much valuable information in The 3-Delay Mix System! This book goes so in depth, that it didn't just explain the various uses of delay, but the actual relationship that delay has with the other elements of your mix. For all aspiring engineers, I can tell you that this information is priceless. I also own the other books in the author's collection and they are one of the most powerful tools in my production and mixing arsenal. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

My father is going through a divorce. (2nd wife, not my mom) At 67 years old he has found himself at a place he never thought he would be (BESIDES living with his adult daughter!) He's not a "tough guy" or one who avoids feelings. His therapist suggested that he might benefit from journaling but he has found it difficult to get started especially when staring down a blank piece of paper.I saw this book and wondered if this might be a good way to get him started. Well he LOVES IT! Yes, it's a bit "floral" but it's a fantastic book for anyone of any age or gender. The topics are fantastic and at 67, my father is journaling away happily and making great progress with his emotions and the process of his divorce.(This isn't specifically for people going through divorce, it's just his specific situation)I would recommend this book to anyone who wanted to begin the process of writing, journaling or even just trying to get to know themselves. I have to buy one for myself too!

I bought this book on a whim and am really happy with my purchase. The book has a beautiful hardcover design. My book arrived in good condition and I did not have any issues with the cover being put on backwards as some other reviews did. There is a Table of Contents at the beginning of the book which includes all of the 52 list titles, which are separated into 4 sections: Reflect, Acknowledge, Invest, and Transform. Each list has two-pages dedicated to it and there are a few pages with just photographed pictures (landscape, flowers, etc) for aesthetic purposes. The book also includes a built in bookmark ribbon to hold your place. It has been a great journal so far and I would recommend it to others.

List of what to love about this book:* appealing and sturdy cover* positive focus on happiness - any time we are thinking about happiness and what makes us happy, we are not worrying or entertaining negative thoughts. It's better for our mental and physical health. Some believe what we think about, we attract into our lives. So, this book encourages and supports habits to think happy!* a year of weekly journaling inspiration divided into 52 lists - do a list a week and add to it daily, spend time pondering it* action prompt at the end of each list - you can take action and change your life based upon the list* lists prompt self-discovery and fun activities* option to join others via hashtag #52HappyLists regarding their list project* these lists could be a resource for a classroom, creative writing class, or support group* lots of room to write on lined paper with two pages for each list* makes for a thoughtful gift* soft deep red velvet ribbon to mark where you areThe list book is divided into four sections: reflect, acknowledge, invest and transform. This would be great for seasons of the year. Then under each of these themes are list topics. Some of my favorites list topics under Reflect: list the things you are really good at; list the best choices you have made in your life so far; list the greatest compliments and encouragement you have been given; list the things you like to do that don't involve technologyList topics I like under Acknowledge: list the simple ways you enjoy being kind to others; list the times when you felt like you made a difference in someone else's life; list the best opportunities that others have given you throughout your life; list the things about yourself you don't need to change.List topics I like under Invest: list the compliments you want to give to others; list the things you're curious about; list the happiest and funniest stories you've heard latelyList topics I like under Transform: list some images that make you happy; list the things, people and experiences you want to say yes to; list one achievement big or small, every day this week. So, that gives you an idea of the kinds of list topics included. Of course, you'll find your own which especially appeal to you. One can see how these topics are going to reveal patterns of activities, people, things which make you happy and by doing the lists you will find more ways to include these in your life.

Good subjects to write about and I love the reflection activity afterwards. I think I will enjoy this book.

I have a copy of Ms.Seal's first journal book, The 52 Lists Project, and gave multiple copies to friends and family. I'm a social worker who appreciates the value of journaling, both for myself and for my patients. However, I personally struggle with lined, blank pages in narrative journals-What do I write? Do I write entries every day of what I had for breakfast? The "Meaning of Life"? How green the grass looked today? The 52 Lists for Happiness is even better than the first book. I have to wonder if Ms. Seal consulted peer-reviewed research on the subject of gratitude journals (evidence based for enhanced well-being in many populations). These lists also include suggestions for acting on what makes us happy, and putting positive action to positive thought is almost always a good thing. I highly recommend it for yourself, and for gift-giving.

Full disclosure: my therapist recommended this listing journal to me as she found it remarkably constructive when she got it for herself. So if a therapist thinks it's a legitimate mindfulness exercise, then you know it must be good. It's a beautiful little book, and bound, which I hadn't expected. I'm sure there must be a ringed version out there somewhere for those who prefer it, but I was pleasantly surprised when this one came in hardback (I'm a stickler for hardbound journals, what can I say?)It's laid out beautifully, with action steps for each list you do. It's a great exercise for anyone trying to practice gratitude and mindfulness, or for someone just looking to have fun with lists around self-discovery. Well worth the purchase. I suggest getting it at the start of the calendar year if possible, but the journal isn't based around time of year anyway. It's just a preference on my part. I'm weird.Long and short of it: a good, reasonable investment towards your own happiness.

As a newer therapist this book is a much needed necessity. It has helped give me ideas on how to work on some client issues and how to assess them. I always keep this book in my treatment room for a quick reference guide. I have a bit of OCD, so I tabbed the book for easy reference. I highly recommend this book for any new or older therapist!

I am happy with the book itself. Covers a list of common conditions that most massage therapists will come across. And so far I have found the information interesting. The disappointing thing about the kindle version is that it is hard to read the Protocols suggested for treating each condition. The box has smaller font. I try to enlarge it and that doesn't help. It changes for the rest of the text but not the text in the box? And unfortunately I can't zoom out the pages. Not sure if anyone else has had this problem or knows how to fix it.

Good info

I've always loved having protocols to follow and tweak based on a customer's needs. Now I have it all in Charlotte's book. She lays everything out so it's easy to follow, concise, and yet gets to the heart of what needs to be done and allows room to make adjustments as necessary. I love the format of the book and feel that this book is a MUST for every massage therapist's tool box. This book has made me a better therapist and a better professional. I'm grateful to have this book so that I can keep getting better at something I love to do. Thanks Charlotte.

Item was as described and expected.

I can't get enough of this manual! Virtually everything a therapist needs to give a client with any of these conditions the best, safest, most effective massage is at your fingertips! This manual is a must have in your reference material. It gives me the confidence I need to enter a session with a client knowing I will "do no harm". Great Job Charlotte Michael Versagi!!!!!

This book is so worth the money. I use this in most of my massage classes. Great info, very helpful!

Essential book for students of massage

Review

"This book is Reengineering the Corporation for the digital age. It is destined to be the classic, authoritative reference for how organizations plan, organize, implement, and measure their work. Lean Enterprise describes how organizations can win in the marketplace while harnessing and developing the capabilities of employees. Any business leader who cares about creating competitive advantage through technology and building a culture of innovation needs to read this book."- Gene Kim, co-author of The Phoenix Project, founder and former CTO of Tripwire, Inc."This book is a godsend for anyone who's tried to change their organization and heard: 'It's OK for the little guy, but we're too big/regulated/complex to work like that here.' Lean Enterprise provides a pragmatic toolkit of strategies and practices for establishing high performing organizations. It should be required reading for every executive who understands that we're all in the technology business now."- Stephen Foreshew-Cain, COO, UK Government Digital Service"To thrive in the digital world, transformation must be more than technology driven--everyone within the organization must collectively work together to adapt. This book provides an essential guide for all leaders to change the way they deliver value to customers."- Matt Pancino, CEO, Suncorp Business Services"This book integrates into a compelling narrative the best current thinking about how to create great software-intensive products and services. The approach in this book is both challenging and disciplined, and some organizations will be unable to imagine following this path. Â But those who make the journey will find it impossible to imagine ever going back--and if they happen to be a competitor, they are well positioned to steal both your market and your people. Ignore this book at your own risk."-Â Mary Poppendieck, co-author of The Lean Mindset and the Lean Software Development series"This is the book I've been waiting for--one that takes on the hardest questions in bringing Lean approaches to the enterprise. The authors provide solutions that are valuable even in low trust environments."- Mark A. Schwartz (@schwartz_cio)

Lean start-up thinking applied to Enterprise IT. An essential read for anyone interested in Digital Transformation and why culture re-engineering matters as much as technology deployment. Jaz Humble makes a convincing case how IT becomes an integral part of the value chain rather than a cost centre. If not IT-driven any organisation will lose its ability adapt to accelerating change, and hence lose its competitiveness. Highly recommended.

I recommend this book for IT, and the pursuit of excellence in consulting..Well structured and well written... processes are valid on many fronts!

It is a very goof guide for implementing change in an IT organization towards a Lean Enterprise. Give some interesting example of companies that made this change. It’s a good complement to the book Inspired by Martin Cagan and the Eric Ries’ books.

Topical coverage is a mile wide but inch deep -- about right for this format and audience.

Awesome. Does a great job of tying together several books / concepts that have been brought out over the last few years (Continuous Delivery: Reliable Software Releases through Build, Test, and Deployment Automation (Addison Wesley Signature Series),The Lean Startup: How Today's Entrepreneurs Use Continuous Innovation to Create Radically Successful Businesses,Impact Mapping: Making a Big Impact with Software Products and Projects to name a few). If you've wondered how some of these concepts work together at an enterprise level, then this book does an amazing job of describing that

The 104 highlights and a dozen notes I took while reading this book may tell how good it is. More than "good" as in "entertaining reading", I think this book is an essential guide on how enterprises must change their mindsets and adapt to a new paradigm of adding value and bring innovation to their businesses. This book evolves the concepts laid out in The Lean Startup (by Eric Ries), and Continuous Delivery (by Jez Humble and David Farley), scaling them up to enterprises and making the more technical approach of the latter palatable to the C-level.

This is a book I am going to read several times. Providing an abundance of references to relevant literature, and being able to gather it all together into a very interesting and relevant to book for everyone who works in the field of innovation and rapid development.

Really liked this book, gave me ideas and inspiration for my work.Especially liked the Improvement Kata approach on enterprise/program level. Miss this part in the frameworks for scaling agile. "Implementing an enterprise-level continuous improvement process is a prerequisite for any large-scale transformation effort".The need for leadership support in the three different horizons in the portfolio is also interesting. What happens when leadership focus should be in the third horizon but actually is in the first?

Wow! After reading and scores of reviews here at Amazon and elsewhere, I feel more inclined to review the reviews than I do the book. However I will start with the book but won't spend a great deal of time on it.I take it that Nicholas Wade is attempting to make the case (1), that there are distinguishable races, and nations wherein some individual races predominate; (2), that it is plain that some nations have become more 'successful' than others; (3), that though genetic makeup in all is fairly straightforward in content, the presence or positioning of variant forms of those genes (alleles) cause differences in how they perform in the humans they occupy; (4), that said alleles are passed along hereditarily within races and nations, and possibly have the capacity to thrust those races evolutionally and advantageously forward in the human contest to achieve success; (5), that this process can be described as 'higher' societal cultures alongside higher IQs sending certain nations or societies into the forefront of international performance.Because the above smacks of racism, politically-correct-oriented academics must oppose Prof. Wade's hypothesis. But Prof. Wade argues that academia should set such fears aside in the interest of the furtherance of science's progress towards truth. My reviewing of the negative reviews of tells to me that Prof. Wade's views as publicized in his book, will continue to face strong opposition from the PC academia currently ensconced in U.S. institutions of higher learning; this, though Wade's line of reasoning is just as sound if not more so, than those of the 1960s-affected academics. All of this can be described as a continuing standoff between PC and certain opposing ideas that transcend PC.

The negative reviews of this book actually encouraged me to buy and to read through it. Afterwards I perused the reviews here on Amazon, and my conclusion is that the controversy regarding this book is another episode in the ongoing reaction to new insights developed from recent advances in genetics, from supporters of established social science, linguistic, and historical paradigms. For example, I recall viewing on YouTube last year a presentation called "The Assault on Historical Linguistics" that criticized competing paradigms generated by discoveries in genetics and by the resulting haplogroup mapping of human expansion across the world. I have seen other examples of defensive reactions by proponents of paradigms social science and historical paradigms that were established with the evidence available by the 1970s, this had led to strong attacks trying to discredit new conceptual frameworks driven by new discoveries in genetics.Nicholas Wade in his book states that racism must be opposed on principle, and that politics should not drive science. Perhaps the members of the current academic establishment need to retire so that a newer generation can look a new evidence with new and less prejudiced eyes.

Nicely researched, and eloquently presented. Anyone interested in the science of race will find a very fair breakdown of the issue in history, science and social application. If you are looking for justification for a racial superiority of any kind, this is not the book. In fact, the less racist you think you are, the more I would recommend this book, as a gateway to expanding your own horizons on the actual background of the subjects.I read this book in parallel with Steven A. LeBlanc's book Constant Battles: Why We Fight/The Myth of the Noble Savage and a Peaceful Past, and found them very mutually complementary.

5 stars for Nicholas Wade taking on a too-often politicized topic and presenting the science with unemotional seriousness. Many topics he covers may be new to readers, and disturbing, such as research done on racial variation in the MAO-A ("violence" or "warrior") gene and its association with psychopathic personality traits; world-wide variations in IQ and links to economic disparities and crime. All very interesting, none of which I'll detail here for fear of down-voting and inciting a comment war. The chapter "Jewish Adaptations" was eye opening, as well.Copious Notes helped me understand the depth of Wade's research into the important topic. A plus was that I found some new books to read, too.In Wade's hands, history and science are made plain, and you can't ask for much more. A studious reader will take much away from this book.I loved it/It was amazing5/5 Goodreads5/5 Amazon

Genetics, the study of heredity, once consisted of nothing but competing politically motivated opinions especially on issues of race, institutions, culture, and society. And it has been perverted by politicians, e.g., Stalin'/Lysenko's wacky genetics, Nazi's eugenics, and just as climate science now is being perverted by politicians for more power and control over people.. But since the discovery of the DNA helix in the 1950s, the automation of sequencing in the 1980s, and the reading of the entire human genome in 2003, the study of genetics has matured to a real science based upon molecular biology and the rigorous testing and verification or refutation of hypotheses. It promises to benefit all of mankind in many ways including improved medical treatment. And it also is revealing new insights into variations among different races. But American academia today is so intellectually corrupt that genetics researchers avoid the biology of race in favor of the politically accepted ideology of race for fear of being labeled racist and having their careers destroyed. But truth can't be suppressed everywhere not even by these neo Nazis.

If you are looking for a book that mirrors the film, this is not it. If you are looking for the real story of a man torn because a nunnery in Ireland forced unwed girls to give up their babies, this is it. It is really about him and his feeling he must have a fundamental "badness" or else why would his birth mother have given him away? This feeling kept him from being truly happy for much of his life. Besides being in a business and culture that more than scorned gays. This is the true story of a gay man who ended up working for the Reagan administration and changed the U.S. to this day defending a gerrymandering suit. All the while his heart was longing to find his birth mother as was hers to find him. This book has deep details about one mans gay life that also reflects the nature of others. Hard to put down and hard to read because the truth of the situation is a tragedy.

I was deeply moved by the movie Philomena, and I was curious to see what Martin Sixsmith actually wrote after his research. I didn't anticipate the book would deal mostly with the life of Philomena's son, Anthony Lee, who became Michael Hess once he was adopted, but I am glad it did. I feel I now know "the rest of the story". He was indeed a "lost child" in more ways than one. In this book Martin Sixsmith reveals details that had been eluded to in the film. Sadly Michael had a difficult life, full of conflicts despite what he made of himself in order to establish a successful career in government and politics. I am not sure he was ever truly as happy as he was those first few years with Philomena at the convent in Ireland. Though forgotten, that time and his biological mother stayed embedded in his subconscious with bits and pieces surfacing from time to time. I was touched by his inner struggles with family, his never- ending search for a sense of belonging, and the challenges of his homosexuality. I didn't enjoy reading details of the practices among some gay men, but I suppose the telling was necessary to reveal how bizarre and conflicted Michael's life actually became. His few true friends, those who deeply loved him, never abandoned him and were his saving grace in his lowest times and even after his death. Michael's story is one of tragedy, heartbreak, and loss, but redeemed in the end as a story of love.

This was the book that inspired the movie but it's much different than the movie. It focuses more of the story on "Michael", Philomena's son, that she was forced to give up for adoption in the early 50's. Much of the book focuses on his homosexuality, that forces him to remain closeted in most of his public life. The book was most interesting to me when it describes Michael, a Democrat and lawyer, working for the Republican National Committee during the Reagan years. The behind-the-scenes political maneuvering that the author describes was very interesting. The book does describe Philomena's search for her long, lost son and some of the appalling practices of the Catholic Church in Ireland of that era but most of the book focuses on Michael: his struggle with his homosexuality; his struggles with the contradictions between his political beliefs and his job and lastly the terrible way the government ignored the scourge of AIDS.

I have no idea what book these reviews are from because this book is NOT about a mother's connection to her lost son but a book about the life of a baby ripped from his mother's arms and how he struggled, lived, and died feeling alone and abandoned but never giving up on finding his mother. This book speaks LITTLE of his mother's journey which is totally opposite of what is portrayed in the movie with Judy Dench. This is a compelling story of a man's life, lived as a homosexual in a time when this was thought to be a conscious decision to live a life this way, and the struggle to find his own identity and ultimately face the horrible AIDS epidemic of the times. The book IS NOT about the mother except in the beginning but certainly does not go through the search for her son later. This is no judgement on her or her grief, pain, and struggle about the loss of her son, but the delusion that if you read this book that is what you will find. That is NOT the case. This book is about her son, plain and simple, and it touched me deeply and I actually cried over the life of this man.

That Philomena's story is true makes it more heart retching. We cannot properly evaluate the events of 60 years ago using today's frames of reference. However, to separate a child from his/her mother must always remain as a last resort; if it is for the child's benefit. The story touched me more so than others who did not live within 15 miles of where Michael's adult life took place. No, I never met Michael and our paths would not have intersected as we travelled in circles on different professional planes. And, some of Michael's life style events are familiar. The movie taken from this book is good. However, it could not show the depth of Philomena's pain and loss. She does have a blessing that other young women in here situation may never have - Philomena is able to visit Michael's final resting place and knows some of his life's experiences.

This is an amazingly compelling book, not necessarily "literature" but nevertheless a riveting story. There are so many cultural issues raised: From the treatment of orphans by the Irish Catholic Church in the middle of the 20th Century to the treatment of the AIDS epidemic by the Republucan Party in the 1980's. Many very emotional and personal events take place, and they are all revealed with sensitivitity. Please don't think that if you have seen the movie you know the story. The book is almost entirely about the boy and his journey in life. This story made me laugh, cry, become angry, and thoughtful.
