The history of the papacy is depressing. Collins provides the latest scholarship on what we know about it. Most people don't know this, but the presbyterial ("New Testament") character of the ministry in Rome lasted for several centuries, and the first true "bishop" of Rome "in the full sense" wasn't evident until about 250 AD. As Collins says, "even after 250 the authority of the bishop over all of the CHristians of the city could not easily be enforced, as it was impossible to impose uniformity in so large a city..." (pg 14).

It's well written and researched presenting a large volume of information in a single book.

A readable and dispassionate history of the world's oldest continuous office. Though from an Anglican background, the author does not delve into anti-Catholic rhetoric but just provides the historical facts while avoiding controversial theological debates. In a way, this is somewhat disappointing in that it is a truly rich history must include the theological questions that are tied so closely to the papacy. A few passing comments concerning infallibility without defining either the protestant or catholic understanding of the term is a bit less than satisfying. Yet, at the same time, it is refreshing that the author keeps us on the path of history and away from distractions that might mire us in the tar pits of our own presuppositions. Just the history without the theological hot button issues - that's what the author gives us. The theological questions are an interesting and important topic in themselves but they tend to distract us from a more detailed historical study. As it is, 2000 years of history cannot be boiled into a few hundred pages without skimping on quite a lot. Sadly, there are portions where we are wishing to dig deeper.A solid introduction to a very broad topic. Well done. For a good followup to this work, we would also recommend Popes and the Papacy: A History (Great Courses The Teaching Company).

This is a quite comprehensive review of the men who have held the papacy from almost the beginning of the Church. It's very well-written and quite easy to understand. Given the vast period of time (almost 2000 years) with which the author has to deal, he has been able to give the reader a lucid account of the good, the bad and the ugly.My only quibble is that, at times, the book wanders back and forth about certain popes and events, and that can get a bit disconcerting. Other than that, I found this book very interesting and informative, and would recommend it to anyone interested in church history, and the men in charge.

This is a disappointing book just briefly summarizing each papacy and implying that popes behaved just like kings and emperors, grasping for money and power and killing off rivals. It offers little treatment of theology, evidently implying that most popes were not very interested in the subject. Some historical controversies are rather briefly mentioned, with none really treated in any detail. There is virtually no consideration of the relationship of popes with ordinary Catholics, the author implying that most popes had no such relationships. But even if the popes were virtually totally isolated from the masses, the author should have examined how the papacy was viewed by the average person - with veneration, indifference, hatred? I read this book because I wanted to know more about the impact of the papacy in history. Unfortunately, I gained little real insight.

The Papacy is one of the oldest organizations in the Western World.In this excellent work, Roger Collins has condensed the history of the Papacy down to 566 pages.That in itself is a monumental task.I have read several other books on the Papacy and will probably read several more;because no matter how much one reads on this subject ,one only scratches the surface.Before even starting to read this book;be sure you are aware of "The List Of Popes" ,starting on page 499.It lists all the popes and and Antipopes from the beginning to the present,including their dates.Because of the long time period and individuals covered ,this history is very complicated and convoluted;thus this "list" is very helpful in sorting things out. The thing that makes the history of the Papacy so complicated is that the Papacy has not existed in isolation ;but has always been intimately connected and affected by what has taken place around it.First of all, there are all the aspects of faith and religion and how man has tried to understand and impliment the teachings of Christ and Christianity.Then there are all the other religions that have existed ,either peacefully alongside Christianity,or in opposition to it.Then there are the various factions and interpretations that have taken place and even caused great schisms.Then ,above all that,Christianity has had to deal with all the weaknesses and strengths of man and how that has impacted Christianity and the Papacy for over 2000 years. As if the religious aspects were not enough,governments,monarchies,tyrants,dictators,politics,ideologies,wars,pandamics,famines,and every other part of society has impacted on the Papacy. Because of all this,it is very difficult to understand the history of the Papacy,without also understanding the historical events that took place during the time.Naturally,as one reads this book,things are often very sketchy;but it would take countless volumes to understand or outline all the whys and wherefores of what happened at any time. The author tries to stick with the facts and does not appear to be prejudiced in his ideas as he writes this history. I guess the thing that came across most clearly to me in reading the history of the Papacy is how it managed to endure all the forces that it has been subjected to and still managed to survive to the present time. In spite of everything,and the changes that have taken place in western civilization;the Papacy is probably in as great shape today,as at any time in its long history. In other words,after all the wars,religious and otherwise,empires that have developed,became all powerful and disappeared,great monarchies that have come and gone,religious sects that have come and gone,social and economic societies and systems that have come and gone,countries that have come and gone---yet, The Papacy ,with all its problems,all of which have been man made,has endured through it all. As a military historian with a Masters in Military History, it's not often that I find a book that I simply can't put down. Most books get a good professional look-see and filed for reference. Not so Jim Stejskal's book on the Berlin Det-A.This is not only a remarkable book, but an important book. Very little has been written about the ETO operations of the Special Forces during the Cold War. Most of the SoF literature that covers the period has been written about the MACV/SOG operations in Vietnam and in other conflicts... and most has been written from a first-person perspective (more on that below.). This book documents some of the untold and most incredible aspects of the Cold War as fought in Europe including revelations about the use of "Backpack" nukes and of the U.S. Army Special Forces operations behind 'enemy' lines in Cold War East Berlin and East Germany. . If, in fact, you liked Jonathan House's book "A Military History of the Cold War" or Eric Haney's "Inside Delta Force" then this is also must-reading.One of the best aspects of this book is that it was written by a serious and professional military historian... who was also a part of the unit through two tours of duty. Yet unlike a lot of the 'I was there' tell-all books about Special Operations forces, this is not a personal aggrandizement or a "look at me" type of read. This is a very in-depth and incredibly well-researched unit history that follows the Berlin Det-A teams from their inception int he 1950's through the dismantling of the unit after the dismantling of the Berlin Wall. Though the author was there and was a key member of the unit through some of the most interesting and tense moments of the Cold War, not once in this broader unit history does he mention his own role. Instead, this is a book documenting an un-heralded and unique unit of the U.S. Army Special Forces. It also gives a fantastic look into the culture of West Berlin from, for lack of a better term, a 'worm's eye view.'Last, and possibly among the most intriguing elements of this book, are the detailed revelations of the Berlin unit's involvement in Operation Eagle Claw, the attempt to rescue the American Hostages from Iran. Though several 'first person' narratives of this operation have been well-received (including Charlie Beckwith's "Delta Force" and Haney's book mentioned above) this is the first book that reveals some of the un-heralded activities of the operators who were on the ground in Tehran preparing to meet the Delta and Ranger rescuers who never made it past Desert One. It details the pre-rescue surveillance carried out by Dick Meadows and also documents an largely-forgotten aspect of the raid, which was the complication of how to rescue Americans held at the Chancellery building in Tehran, separate from other hostages.Without a doubt, this is a book that should be on the shelf of any serious student of Special Operations. It is also very readable and completely engaging. A must-read.

There are several excellent first-person accounts of episodes in Special Forces creation, development, and operations that we hold as important to our history. This work is not one of those. It is much more comprehensive. In Special Forces Berlin, Stejskal takes us through two generations of Green Berets clandestinely planning and executing missions in a unique environment during the Cold War, a period covering more than half of Special Forces existence. The power of the work is in Stejskal’s approach. He takes us from the post-WW II Cold War world environment to the creation of Special Forces and the secret Berlin detachment. Throughout the era, he explains the episodes in the Cold War, the situation at each time in Berlin, and then the work of our units to adapt to their environment and to conduct those difficult missions. The best example of that is the Berlin participation in the Tehran hostage rescue. Jim pulls no punches. He discusses mistakes and weaknesses along with the successes. The takeaway is the ability of a small Special Forces unit, under cover, to evolve, adapt, and continue to march until the enemy collapsed before them and they withdrew leaving no hint that they were there. Read it. Ignore the back-cover photos of ‘Styk’ morphing into Sam Elliot. It’s a publisher’s trick.

Finally, James Stejskal with his book “Special Forces Berlin: Clandestine Cold War Operations of the US Army’s Elite, 1956-1990” gives this unit the historical treatment and tribute it deserves. This organization has left its mark on the evolution of modern Special Forces and its Unconventional Warfare mission. DET-A was a small unit stationed in Berlin, Germany for 34-years, during the height of the Cold War to conduct sensitive activities. This unit specialized in unconventional warfare, counter-terrorism and direct action using low-visibility techniques of tradecraft (plain clothes undercover operations) and high-end state-of-the-art equipment like their testing of the feasibility of employing Special Atomic Demolition Munitions (aka backpack nukes) before the mainstream establishment of Green Light teams. DET-A also revolutionized counter-terrorism techniques later adopted by Blue Light a Special Forces stopgap counter terrorist unit that was disbanded after the establishment of the 1st SFOD-D (aka Delta Force). This book outlines all this plus much more, and although this book does not divulge any classified information (rightly so) it is still very revealing. It is comforting to know this capability lives on in the modern Special Forces maintaining that direct linage to the WWII Office of Stratgic Services (OSS) and DET-A respectively. I will also add that besides the superb quality of the hardcover book I also purchased the Kindle version because I did not want to wait for the book to arrive in the mail. The Kindle version is excellent on my PC and smart phone with no glitches. I highly recommend this book to all SOF operators, military historians and, I think it reads very well for the layman reader as well; who will be intrigued by the exploits of these extraordinary men. As a 28-years active duty SF operator I give this book five stars!

This section mixes together mythology of traditional Chinese theory on chi with scientific explanations where science has something to say on the matter.The third chapter describes the 13 postures of Tai chi chuan, which are a set of fundamentals that feature prominently in the martial art. This is a relatively brief section and is where the book becomes photo intensive.The fourth chapter offers students guidance about the unarmed element of Yang Style of Tai chi chuan. While the capstone of the chapter is a systematic walk through the Long Form, there’s also coverage of some Yang Style fundamental movements as well as presentation of meditational practices taught in the system. It should be noted that this book doesn’t cover the sequence of the Yang Style Short Form (a.k.a. 24 Forms, or the Beijing Standard Form.) (I mention that because that’s the most popular form in the world and many students may want to learn about it specifically. This book offers many insights into the minutiae of the component forms, but doesn’t describe it as a sequence.) There is a fifth chapter, but it’s only a brief conclusion.With respect to ancillary matter, like most martial arts books, it’s graphic-intensive. There are endnotes of cited material, but I read the Kindle edition, and most of these were unavailable because Chinese characters didn’t convert to the electronic format. This was no big deal for me because I couldn’t read the Chinese reference material anyway, but if you read Chinese, you might opt for the hardcopy of the book.I learned the Yang Style short and long forms several years ago, and bought this book to provide some background and technical guidance. I found the book to be interesting and informative, and would recommend it—particularly if you’ve learned the Yang Style (but one may find the early chapters interesting even if one hasn’t.) The author uses a number of entertaining and educational stories and the book is readable and insightful for students of all levels.

I already had some knowledge of the history and practice of tai chi chuan and still found book a little confusing at first. It makes sense after review and practice. Also, must use DVD. Dr Yang is a grandmaster, he is a purist, and this book is very good, but it is not for the casual learner of tai chi or the person who wants quick and simple explanation. I found the guide on Chinese pronunciation helpful for learning the Chinese names of different forms, I find myself rereading chapters & gaining greater insight as my own practice of tai chi improves. I am a female, 67 yrs old and currently using Dr Yang's 37 form DVD. Tai chi has changed my life in ways I never imagined.

I have studied and taught many forms of Chi-Gong spanning some 40 yrs. and have found the internal description of the workings of Chi in the body most impelling. One must have a good Yang instructor, however this book is very easy to follow the movements of his form, by Yang Jwing-Ming.

I have been in the martial arts(karate), for years and have not had a more difficult workout in my life. It takes months just to build enough muscles in your legs to withstand the postures and do the form. Something was always missing in Karate but the Qi aspect in Chinese martial arts is fully explained and enlightening as well as the Yin an Yang principles.The form takes 3 years to learn correctly and 3 more to begin to understand the Yin and Qi through proper breathing while doing the form. Highly recommended if you want to go far beyond mere health benefits and into the self defense aspect. It is not for the faint of heart as it demands great patience and perseverance to master...ten years to be exact....maybe longer if you do just the video and book.

This book is very informative, for those whishing to study Tai Chi Chuan. the DVD, for this book, would also be a great aid in the study of Tai Chi Chaun . One really needs to purchase one of the DVDs to learn the form if you are doing it alone with no access to a master. The Yang Tai Chi for Beginnners by Dr Yang covers the form nicely, but one specifically made for this book has a lot of valuable additional material. You can't go wrong with both.

For all who love car shows, this is a keeper. It's like being at one! The author captures many of the unique trailers in camp grounds. For those with building skills, this is a can-do idea book for creating an attractive and functional trailer. I'm glad to see the revival of these small, lightweight campers today as many vehicles are powered by 4 cylinder engines. This book gives a glimpse of many great teardrop campers.

If you are interested in the history of teardrop trailers, this book is for you. Filled with great photographs and interesting details of the teardrop's birth and now it's revival today. This is not a how to book nor does the book have specifications, so if you are building your own teardrop, this book is great for inspiration.

This book provides a great overview of small trailers, including teardrops, so-called canned hams, fiberglass, and airstream trailers. There is not a lot of detail about the trailers, but is rather a photo essay of some nicely restored trailers and their towing vehicles, also vintage. I had hoped to learn more about the trailers as I am in the market for a vintage trailer, but there wasn't enough detail to help me much in this. For example, there are no floor plans or enough photos to understand them. Still, I thought it was worthwhile for showing what can be done for a vintage trailer.

Nice coffee table book. Many pictures of different Teardrop campers of different ages. Some other similar type campers too. Lots of ideas in one place. Campers will like this book.

Do you love the idea of dropping everything and heading out for a few days on the open highway... but the cost of fuel and lodging holds you back? This book will inspire you with very real solutions to the fuel and lodging problems. Look at the very cool way regular folk traveled during the depression era and beyond, keeping it minimalist but comfy all the same. Beautiful layout and photos and inspirational to those with incurable wanderlust.

There are lots of pretty pictures and general information. It talks about the former makers of teardrop trailers and the current resurgence of teardrops. The smaller the original trailer was, the more costly it is today due to collectors. No practical information about constructing or modification. One of those books that you just file away after you've read it once.

I don't know if I could live in such a small space even just for a weekend, but it sure is fun to look at all the vintage cars and trailers.

This book is a fun - makes me think of the Partridge Family bus! The designs are for the most part very similar but still fun and inspiring. I've already finished the first 3 in the book - one using shades of red, blue and purple, one using Neon Pencils and the last using Neon gel pens (sorry, no camera or scanner). The designs are printed on one side only which is a huge plus for me - I've reached the point where that's about the only way I purchase books anymore. I always put a piece of parchment paper just in case but even the gel pens did not leak through - the paper quality is very nice. And I enjoy the little blurbs on the back of the pages - quotes by people like John Lennon, Eleanor Roosevelt, etc. Lovely book for the price and most definitely a relaxing way to spend a few hours each day.

I love the patterns, they are really fun to color. But the paper is thin and it bleeds through to the back and on to the next page. I put a piece of paper between the papers, the one I’m working on, and The one behind. but this particular patterns is on both sides of the paper. So it leaks through.

The is such a beautiful coloring book and many of the pictures have large spaces to color. My 6 yo granddaughter has already claimed this one for herself so looks like I'll be purchasing another one. We both love it, thanks!

Kind of a waste only few have full pics and paper easily rips. Bought 2 and both the same wouldn't buy again.

Gave this to my 9 year old daughter who loves music. she loves it! It's a little different from her other books as some of the pages have much more white/blank space, which I think is a welcome change.

I love Jess Volinsky and her books are great. One sided print and perforated pages. The paper has a nice quality to it and it hold up well to markers. The drawings range from very detailed to simple. I love this.

Basically I have the artistic ability of a remote control LOL I have always wanted to learn how to write in a pretty way. I’ve tried official classic calligraphy and that was a nightmare. But then I started seeing a lot of stuff on Instagram and online about hand lettering and a new way of doing calligraphy. So my interest was definitely piqued. After quite a bit of research I found this book online and immediately bought it. I think this book is good for somebody like myself. A beginner with or without artistic talent. I bought myself a “Tombow beginNer “ Kit with pen, pencil, eraser, etc. I also got myself a notebook that I could practice in. I must say I became particularly motivated after realizing I could do this. While I’m not going to post any images because nobody needs to laugh that hard. LOL I believe with some practice I can be kind of good. I could make pretty envelopes, make signs, etc. etc. goodness knows I will never have a career or 1 million followers on Instagram for my lettering skills, but it’s nice to learn something new and put the creative side of my brain to work. If you want to learn about lettering and hand calligraphy, amp up the way you write/draw your letters, further your skills, etc. this book is quite useful. If you are more advanced you might not get as much out of it. It may be a tad bit of a disappointment if you are definitely advanced/more creative than somebody like me LOL But it would definitely make a good gift for somebody who has shown interest in lettering/calligraphy. I was going to buy the e-book version but for something like this I really like having the book right there in front of me. Plus there is practice space in the book. After I’ve used up that space I go onto my grid styled black-and-white hard covered notebook. I like keeping everything in one notebook so as to watch my progression or regression if I wait too long in between practice sessions. So practice practice practice that’s the only way to make it to Carnegie Hall and that’s the only way to become a lettering guru!This company also puts out other books that are quite awesome

I just got this book today and I’ve been having so much fun!! I think this book is an amazing deal for just $7! I haven’t gotten my brush pens yet so I’ve just been doing simple hand lettering with a mechanical pencil. Still super fun! Hat I recommend, and I didn’t do sadly, is to take pictures of the pages before you start writing in them or scan them so you can print them out and use them again if you want. Personally I forgot to do this but I don’t think it’s 100% necessary anyway because you can always get an extra notebook and trace! Anyway, am loving this book so far!

This book...I mean, you look at it and think, how hard can this be to convey? But it does not give you any more instruction than "aren't these cool? Let's try some!" leaving out a lot of important troubleshooting steps. In reality, hand lettering is really difficult at first, and it's better to start with basic shapes (instead of jumping right into letters, which this book does) and practice those umpteen times. Like others have said, you don't get more than a couple lines for each letter. After fiddling with this book, I went to YouTube and found some comprehensive tutorials and free, printable worksheets with lots of good advice, especially for navigating tricky shapes. Don't buy this if you're a beginner, unless you want to risk being discouraged and giving up.

 Seems like it would be a cool book but the one I got seems to be missing pages. It doesn't have the 5 different alphabet styles except for what seems like the last page of one, with just Y and Z. The whole first 3/4 of the book is empty practice pages and the last 1/4 is actual information/tips, examples, projects. I've included a video to show what I mean.I'd happily leave a higher rating if I could be sent a proper copy.

I LOVE this book!! I’ve wanted to improve my penmanship and learn modern calligraphy and lettering for a looooong time. I thought I’d give this book a try and I’m so confident in my lettering now. I’m excited to create my own projects and show off my new skills!!

I really enjoy this book. It has lots of room to practice in and is very helpful in learning different fonts. I was super excited to find that the company who makes this book offers an additional free download of content for FREE! The only downfall n the reason I chose 4 stars instead of 5 is because the ink bleeds thru the paper really badly. I have been using some dual ended markers and it makes it really hard to see what ur doing on the following page.

I am using a brush pen to practice and the paper is so thin that it is bleeding through onto the next practice page. You would think the would have used thicker paper knowing it was a practice book.

Great book for a beginner to lettering. I like how it covers more than just one style, and give tips to put your own twist on things. The last chapter includes ways to combine the different styles and flourishes into projects and artwork.The only negative I have is I wish the binding was more like a spiral notebook so that it says flat.It would also be nice if there were more blank practice pages included.
