Review

"A landmark...Harris is a peerless observer of the harrowing economic costs of 'meritocracy'."―n+1"Malcolm Harris offers up an exciting, persuasive argument that young people are not, in fact, monsters. An excellent gift for NPR-listening elders who appreciate a good debate and could use a little sympathy for the millennial."―New York Magazine"The first major accounting of the millennial generation written by someone who belongs to it."―Jia Tolentino, The New Yorker"When will someone stick up for millennials? We have been sheltered by our parents, swindled by our universities, deadened by our therapists, and for all this our reward has been glib condescension from the boomer press. Rising to our defense is Harris, a familiar provocateur from the internet's left flank. Harris contends that America has stiffed our generation...He brings a fresh, contrarian eye to some of the usual data points...As generational advocates go, we could do worse than Harris."―New York Times Book Review"Malcolm Harris's thesis is the kind of brilliantly simple idea that instantly clarifies an entire area of culture: Millennials are the way they are-anxious, harried, and 'narcissistically' self-focused, though hardly lazy or entitled-because the neoliberal economy has made them so. When we raise children in a world that reduces people to 'human capital', then bids down the price of that resource, what else should we expect? Kids These Days is deft, witty, unillusioned, and brutally frank. Read it and weep, puke, scream."―William Deresiewicz, New York Times bestselling author of Excellent Sheep"Kids These Days is the best, most comprehensive work of social and economic analysis about our benighted generation. Malcolm Harris matches Naomi Klein for depth of research and Jane Jacobs for systemic vision. If you're a millennial who feels economically jinxed and unfairly spat-upon, but can't say why, cram this book in your brain; if you think millennials are lazy and entitled, cram this book in your mouth. Fascinating, infuriating, and bulging with receipts, Kids These Days shows us why no space is safe."―Tony Tulathimutte, author of Private Citizens"This fiercely smart book is not just another 'millennials killed chain restaurants' kind of thing. Instead, Harris dives deep into the ways that the millennial generation has been shaped by the capitalist economic forces at work now in America. . . It's a must read for anyone who cares about the future of our society."―Nylon"It is difficult to believe nobody has written this book before, although it is fortunate that Harris--who manages to be quick and often funny without sacrificing rigor--is the author who ultimately took up the task. In fewer than three hundred pages, he surveys the myriad hot takes on millennials-they're lazy, they're entitled, they're narcissists who buy avocado toast instead of homes, slacking on Snapchat at their unpaid internships-and asks, 'Why?'"―Bookforum"Malcolm Harris restores a good deal of precision to the business of defining the millennial and generational discourse in general. Adhering to a Marxian and behaviorist account of society, Harris argues that you cannot understand millennials - those born between 1980 and 2000, which include him, and me for that matter - without examining the political, economic and social institutions that nurtured them... Through this lens we get a sweeping sketch of the bleak, anxiety-ridden lives of young Americans."―Financial Times"A methodical deconstruction of one of the stupidest tropes to degrade recent discourse. The 'millennial' is created, not born, as Harris shows, and as is true of all creations, her qualities reveal more about her makers than they do about her... Kids These Days answers a political moment defined both by youthful outrage and by the patronizing responses to it, which deny that it is informed by lived experience."―The Nation

Coherent, well-organized, insightful and scary analysis of a USA society and economy structurally engineered to make life extremely difficult for the Millennial generations.Harris supports his clear thesis throughout in journalistic manner with reference to dozens of studies, statistics and sources, however despite being scholarly high-level work his book is also riveting and a quick read, really puts our contemporary society in perspective especially for Millennials and Generation X.Particularly important with regard to employment prospects, competition, demographics and the stark reality of our near future.

If you are, or love, a millennial (hopefully all of us), you need to read this fresh look at the world they inherited. In very accessible prose, Harris delves deep into various facets of society from how we play and entertain ourselves, to how we work. He explains how we have raised a generation of kids, now adults, with more skills, credentials, and abilities, making them the most efficient and productive workers the world has ever seen. On the way to building all this human capital, we also created the most tested, stressed, prescribed, indebted, and incarcerated group of young people we have ever seen. It's not always cheery, but it's often funny, and extremely smart. Must read.

For some reason, some website I had visited recommended this book for youth ministry. I'm not completely sure why... perhaps because Millennials have nothing going for them and we in the church can leverage that into faith. (A somewhat snarky, but perhaps not entirely empty notion.)Certainly religion is left far off the map in Harris' analysis. Perhaps he should have included it in the Boomer legacy. Boomers left the church to chase after sex, drugs and rock and roll and then when they went to have kids didn't want to impose some faith on them, so left them to "find their own faith." Great plan, that. And so the faith in Christ that could mitigate this onslaught on childhood (and on into adulthood) has never been introduced to at least one, probably at least two generations. Harris has interesting statistical analysis and logical extrapolations from it, but no answers. (For that I don't fault him for not painting a faux ending.) I would be interested to hear how he thinks the dearth of spirituality impacted the doomed generation.

This book I feel is really important for Millennials to read and understand the hardships that have been strategically placed on our shoulders since the day we were born.Take this gold starMake it soarTake this gold starAnd redefine the lore.Lame poem but this book really hyped me up to start redefining Millennials and showing the generations before us who's in charge now. Do you feel like crap everyday? Do your friends take medication just to get through a week of finals? Do you hear older people complain about being on your phone all the time? This book shows how Gen X may have ruined the very idea of a Millennials and now refuse to take credit for it. Breaking down the specifics of the generation that is known for being unproductive and lazy shows how Millennials have become deprived of childhoods based on how much pressure is placed on them to be the best from the very beginning.

Wow, I can't say that I often finish books, but this I couldn't put down. I'm currently a college students studying engineering & I don't really have much time to read books for fun. I honestly was so intrigued by this book that I prioritized reading it every night until I got through it. This is a must read for any college student who is making important decision about his or her future. Super eye opening narrative about the lies we've been told all our lives about our potential for success & our ability to be in control of our future. It honestly is a bit of a bleak outlook, but a fascinating read nonetheless.

Although at times the information was tough to accept, the book opened up a new level of understanding for me. It's obvious how much research went into this book and that research leads to quite a bit of in-depth detail. It is this detail combined with the author's own experience that really makes this book worth reading. The combination of facts, circumstances, and experience paints a really morbid picture, however, there is enough here to work with towards more positive outcomes.

A truly great book that looks at the 'stereotypical Millennial' and explains how rampant late Capitalism created them. It's easy to poke fun at an entire generation; it is much harder to analyse where that generation is coming from. That's what Harris does in one of the most readable books of social economics I've ever encountered.

This book immediately appealed to me as a generational researcher (and classic millennial). I tell my Lifespan Development students that we aren't going to use the phrase "kids these days" because it immediately distances us from other generations. The two charts on the back of the book are really interesting and I have already been sharing them with others. I would have loved more recommendations towards the end of the book. Looking forward to following the rest of Harris's work now.

Wonderful story. Love this author.

Cute story, but moved along very slowly. Didn't keep my attention after awhile. I will be donating it to my local library.

Poor qualitu

Generally speaking, this book is *okay*. It's not bad. It's not breathtaking. It's just a story about a group of children on a farm for the summer having conversations about their family and neighbors, and examining their religious beliefs with the mixture of piety and casual curiosity to common to children. It's nothing spectacular, but it's perfectly readable. The characters aren't as vibrant and interesting as Montgomery's other works, and the narrator is nowhere near as captivating as Anne Shirley. That said, for those who enjoy classics and casual stories about everyday life in the early 20th century, this book will be perfect! For myself, I'm glad I read it, but I don't think it's one I'd revisit.

The Story Girl is a wonderful slice of life in a quieter more relaxed time. It is wonderful to read of the fears and triumphs of these great kids. I was touched by how they loved one another through arguments and forgiveness. I was surprised by some of the vocabulary. I think it might be a challenge for modern readers. A lovely book. I'm very glad that it has been brought back to print. Thank you to the publisher for the gift of an advanced copy in exchange for my honest review.

I have read almost all of CJ Petit's books and have never been disappointed. I love Westerns simply because I know the good guy is good, the bad guy is bad and the good guy always wins in the end. I know a lot of people would say that's not true life, but I get enough true life every day and a book is a form of break from my normal existence. It's a mental vacation for me. I always loved Louis L'Amour and still do. He is the quintessential western write to me. But what CJ Petit does is add the dimension of romance into a western. I know, his leading women are always pretty, love their man, and have a healthy sexual appetite, but once again it makes for a great story, and wouldn't all of us men want our women to be that way?? Anyway, I can't recommend CJ Petit's books highly enough. I have almost read them all, and before long I will be able to say with assurance that I HAVE read them all. I hope he keeps on cranking them out. Thanks CJ for such good work.

Good book, and I have bought and read almost all of this author's books. The hero is a kind, thoughtful, capable man who views women as the same. Back in the 1870's and 1880's women has almost no rights in America and sometimes their husbands were cruel and thoughtless. The hero is NOT like most men, and he sees women as people to be cared for and cherish, and also to become capable and strong in their own right. The plots are good, and it is uplifting to read about a really GOOD man who is ALL MAN and that the ladies he saves become much happier and stronger for knowing him. There is always a love story in these books.

Dec 2017. KR, RW. Excellent! Mack & Katie. Once again this author gives us a great adventure romance story. The characterization is fascinating. Mack is a gunsmith but also a man who is always helping other people. Lots of info about guns and very interesting. He and Katie love each other but it takes a while before they finally marry. Katie is his true love and he loves her deeply as she does him. Mack is shot many times as he is trying to help others but manages to pull through the wounds. He is a gunsmith who really knows his way around all types of guns.

CJP has written a western that takes place in Colorado. The primary setting is a gun shop in Pueblo and the second Canon City. The two towns are on the north and south side of Denver. The young man is an expert gun smith and he becomes involved in the range war by design and not accident. His brothers family is being threatened by a larger ranch owner. The gun smith comes and aids the young and innocent. This is an excellent read for the genre..... ER

The first 50% of this book was the best and should have been its own story. After that, it went downhill. The writing became shallow and rushed with missing words, inaccurate words and confused identities. In places, it reads as if the author had lost interest. 'Winston' becomes 'Emerson' and 'Mack' becomes 'Will'. A horse's 'mane' becomes 'main' etc. C. J. Pettit is better than this. A good proofreading and editing job could make this first rate.

I have been binge reading CJ Petit's westerns. I don't need to read the synopsis to see what its about, because whatever it is it will be good. A very normal western with "good guys" and "bad guys" with out ambiguities, presented with just enough of a difference to be very enjoyable. Read them, you'll like them.

I've read enough of Mr. Petit's books now that I believe he is churning them out as fast as he can. I continue reading them because he is so good at making the story lines very different but interesting. Very unfortunately, he does not proof-read or have a decent editor. There continue to be numerous errors (of which this book has many). It is frustrating and certainly not a 5 star book

Whole Petit's writing doesn't equal L'Amore or Johnstone it is generally an easy read. I think he spends to much time discussing meals and taking care of his horse ( he's been shot in the left bicep and removes the saddle, grooms the horse and eats again then manages to put everything back on 2 hours later).

Amazon.com Review

Power is delightful, and absolute power should be absolutely delightful--but not when you're the most powerful man on earth and the place is ticking like a time bomb. Jack Ryan, CIA warrior turned U.S. president, is the man in the hot seat, and in this vast thriller he's up to his nostrils in crazed Asian warlords, Russian thugs, nukes that won't stay put, and authentic, up-to-the-nanosecond technology as complex as the characters' motives are simple. Quick, do you know how to reprogram the software in an Aegis missile seekerhead? Well, if you're Jack Ryan, you'd better find someone who does, or an incoming ballistic may rain fallout on your parade. Bad for reelection prospects. "You know, I don't really like this job very much," Ryan complains to his aide Arnie van Damm, who replies, "Ain't supposed to be fun, Jack." But you bet The Bear and the Dragon is fun--over 1,000 swift pages' worth. In the opening scene, a hand-launched RPG rocket nearly blows up Russia's intelligence chief in his armored Mercedes, and Ryan's clever spooks report that the guy who got the rocket in his face instead was the hoodlum "Rasputin" Avseyenko, who used to run the KGB's "Sparrow School" of female prostitute spies. Soon after, two apparent assassins are found handcuffed together afloat in St. Petersburg's Neva River, their bloated faces resembling Pokémon toys. The stakes go higher as the mystery deepens: oil and gold are discovered in huge quantities in Siberia, and the evil Chinese Minister Without Portfolio Zhang Han San gazes northward with lust. The laid-off elite of the Soviet Army figure in the brewing troubles, as do the new generation of Tiananmen Square dissidents, Zhang's wily, Danielle Steel-addicted executive secretary Lian Ming, and Chester Nomuri, a hip, Internet-porn-addicted CIA agent posing in China as a Japanese computer salesman. He e-mails his CIA boss, Mary Pat "the Cowgirl" Foley, that he intends to seduce Ming with Dream Angels perfume and scarlet Victoria's Secret lingerie ordered from the catalog--strictly for God and country, of course. Soon Ming is calling him "Master Sausage" instead of "Comrade," but can anybody master Ming? The plot is over the top, with devastating subplots erupting all over the globe and lurid characters scaring the wits out of each other every few pages, but Clancy finds time to insert hard-boiled little lessons on the vileness of Communism, the infuriating intrusions of the press on presidential power, the sexual perversions of Mao, the poor quality of Russian pistol silencers ("garbage, cans loaded with steel wool that self-destructed after less than ten shots"), the folly of cutting a man's throat with a knife ("they flop around and make noise when you do that"), and similar topics. Naturally, the book bristles like a battlefield with intriguingly intricate military hardware. When you've got a Tom Clancy novel in hand, who needs action movies? --Tim Appelo

From Publishers Weekly

"Klingons" is how hero Jack Ryan describes the villainsDthe Communist Chinese PolitburoDof Clancy's mammoth new novel; other Yanks refer to Chinese soldiers as "Joe Chinaman." It's not for subtlety of characterization, then, that this behemoth proves so relentlessly engrossing. Nor is it for any modulation in the arc of its action, which moves insistently from standstill to hurtle. Nor is it for the author's (expressed) understanding of life's viscissitudes; in this Clancyverse, no white hat with a name dies, but every black hat gets whupped bad. Partly it's for the sheer bulkDif ever a book should come equipped with wheels, it's this oneDwhich plunges readers into a sea of words so vast that, after hours of paddling happily through brisk prose, the horizon remains hidden from sight. Mostly, though, it's because that sea glitters with undeniable authority. Clancy has demonstrated in earlier books (Rainbow Six, etc.) that he towers above other novelists in his ability to deliver geo-political, techo-military goods on a global scaleDand here he's at the top of that war-gaming. With aplomb, he spins numerous plot strandsDamong them: a Sino-American spy seduces his way into Politburo secrets; enormous oil and gold reserves are discovered in Siberia; the new Papal Nuncio to Beijing is murdered; the Politburo orders a hit on a top Russian officialDthat lead to a Chinese invasion of Russia and a credible war scenario that occupies the novel's last quarter and that culiminates in a nuclear crescendo. Each thread carries a handbook's worth of intoxicating, expertly researchedDseemingly insideDinformation, about advanced weapons of war and espionage, about how various governments work, complemented always with ponderings about the tensions between individual honor and the demands of state. Add to that the excitement for Clancy fans of this being the first novel to feature not just Jack Ryan but also, in significant subordinate roles, Jack Clark and Ding Chavez of Rainbow Six and other tales, and you've got a juggernaut that's going to hit #1 its first week out and stay there for a good while. 2 million first printing; BOMC main selection; author tour. I don't believe Clancy actually wrote this book. It isn't like his prior Ryan books. It's over 1000 pages, and if you deleted all the "f" words, it probably would have been 100 pages shorter. Not having references to sex and whores/prostitutes could have cut another 100 pages. He could have been just fine not adding useless filler to demonstrate his knowledge of history. I had a hard time even getting interested in it and almost gave up about 10 chapters into it. It finally did pick up and I stayed the course, despite multiple typo errors and repeated statements in different parts of the book. Evidently, even the editors couldn't get through it all. Very disappointing. I ordered two more of the books in the series at the same time and really hope they are much better (written by Greany). Of the 13 books that I have read of the Ryan/Ryan JR/Clark series of books, this is the first one I've given a negative rating on, as I normally love his books.

As always Tom Clancy was a Master Story Teller in the Bear and The Dragon. This is a great read, full of action and detail most authors can only dream of. This last installment of the Jack Ryan series is an amazing read. HOWEVER!!!!The Kindle version has a lot of errors. I have the hardback of this book and it is a lot cleaner then the Kindle Version. First it's listed as a John Clark Book. It's not. Look at the Hardback. Second, there are more spelling errors/ formatting errors then seems possible. I think Clancy is turning over in his grave over this. For instance several chapters, sentences and words start out with an extra letter or the the wrong letter as this real example here. "Fit was a wark night . . ." Instead of "It was a dark night." It doesnt detract from the amazing story, it just makes it a little annoying as you read along, especially as you reach the end and realize just how many errors there are. I have a first edition hardback that doesn't have that many errors. Not sure what happened. But you should enjoy it as long as you don't mind the errors. Enjoy!

After reading the (mostly negative) reviews I didn't plan on reading this book, but then realized I wouldn't learn about the beginning of Campus, which is important to understand the background for the second book. I figured to decide myself if it was a 'bad' book or not, and was in for a pleasant surprise! While it lacks the detailed technical descriptions of previous books, this one was a fast paced, easy read and before I knew it, reached the end of the book. It ends with a cliffhanger, so I wonder if Clancy picks up the thread in the next book. Looking forward to continue reading the series.

I rate Clancy's Classic, early stories five stars. Hunt for Red October and Cardinal of the Kremlin are the best, Clear and Present Danger and Without Remorse are also good tales with good characters, well written. This book shows the weaker side of a formula followed for too long. The Ryan character is now fully emersed in a fantasy world and characters that were filled out in earlier books are now hollow shadows. And, the gratuitous sex and Jack Ryan's increasing use of foul language don't ring true compared to Clancy's earlier stories. I wonder if, at the time of this book, Clancy started using uncredited "collaborators" to boost his writing output? This story still provides some entertaining reading, but it is far less compelling than the earlier work that made Tom Clancy the highest standard in spy/techno adventures.

Worst "Tom Clancy" book ever written. Tom Clancy would never have allowed this pile of garbage to be published. Whoever really wrote it has no idea about military equipment or operations. Seems like it was written by a Sophomore in High School trying to get his grade from a D to a C.

Is the reason I bought my first bag of Jamaica Blue Mountain coffee. Loaded with conservative ideology, Russophilia and good coffee, paired with some sex scenes that may have been written by a twelve year old, what's not to love?Seriously, though, I loved this book. If you're a millennial liberal, don't bother, it will make you mad.

Tom Clancy's books have always been a favorite. I loved Jack Ryan, and I know he was a central figure in this novel as well. However, it appears I no longer have the patience to read until it becomes interesting for me to continue. Couldn't keep up with the characters, and although I hate to say this, I was just plain bored. A book is "good" for me if it is difficult to put down.

A very long and unnecessarily drawn out novel which included too much detail about war planning and the various weapons used. U.S. casualties were unrealistically low. Author did not recognize the U.S. National Missile Defense system. Not believable that the Russians would allow the Chinese to retreat from their soil without retribution. I read the book to the end to find out what would happen; it held my attention. This book is not up to Clancy's past books for credibility.

I found that this book did not align to the book the professor was using even though they were both the 13th edition! There were several assignments that the professor referred to a table that was not the same page in my book and sometimes when she sent me the image the table did not even exist in that chapter. This made it very challenging to complete the assignments I had have the professor send me the images of the tables for the assignments!

Items were as described.

It was just what I needed. In great condition too!

No complaints, like quality of the book and great delivery time.

One device limit, I cannot download to multiple PCs or kindle.

The authors just keep on adding pages and pages of dense text. I believe the content can be covered in about half the number of pages that the book currently has.
