My husband and I utilized this guide over two days during our first trip to Savannah and thoroughly enjoyed it. Following the maps were almost like a treasure hunt - and Savannah has many treasures! The maps are split into 4 walking tours. Each tour includes total distance and approximate time to complete the tour. The time to complete each tour would be accurate if you were on a mission to just walk the routes - approximately 3-1/2 hours total for all 4 tours - but we did it at a much more leisurely pace to take time for admiring the magnificent architecture, enjoying the peaceful parks, reading the historical markers, stopping for lunches, drinks and shopping along the route and making our own discoveries along the way. We ended up spending 12 hours over two days entirely following the routes in this guide. Do not be discouraged from purchasing this because of the 1- or 2-Star reviews that feel this is not comprehensive enough. It is, afterall, a walking tour guide, and I for one would not want to lug around an encyclopedia all day! It is thin and lightweight with easy to follow maps and a bit of information about each stop and offers much more than the “pamphlet” some have suggested. Historical markers along the way provide you with more detail.

Bought this in preparation for a trip to Savannah. We only did one of the walks (the first one) but I read through the whole book and learned a lot about the sights - we passed most of the places mentioned in the book over our time there. This book was the right size to slip in my backpack and carry along (a little big for my purse, it just fit with squished corners there - but very lightweight). The write-ups in this book were more thorough than the historic information we found in Savannah from a guided tour and from signs and brochures. The walk I did take from the book was well-planned, and after walking a lot more around Savannah and looking over the other routes, they all looked well designed too. Even if, like me, you may not be planning on doing all the walks in the book, the various walks take you to the main sights and the writing provides interesting historic detail (including, sometimes, inserts of historic photos). I was impressed.Lonely Planet is coming out with a Savannah city guide soon, but I would still recommend these walking tours for more in-depth history written by a native of the city, plus the planned walks.

This is the only guidebook you need for a walking tour of Savannah. It's thin and light weight- so it's easy to carry and provides just enough information to educate, but not overwhelm you with unnecessary facts.

I used to live in Savannah, but it was many years ago and I couldn't remember exactly where everything was. I bought this to take with us (I wanted to show my husband around, who has never been there). I am a native Georgian and even have ancestors from Savannah. In fact, one of my great grandfathers was named as a traitor to the crown in one of the town squares, so as you can see, I had to have the right book and this one did turn out to be very helpful. It begins with a brief history of Savannah and the settlement. It even shows a map from 1734.It then moves into the tours. There are 4 tours to select and just as many have mentioned, you can skip around if you wish. Each tour has its own map with numbers corresponding to landmarks. All maps are very clear and precise. There are a lot of numbered photographs (corresponding to the numbers on the maps) and I believe every landmark has a photo which is helpful, when you're not sure which landmark is what. There are also historical drawings/photographs of the landmark locations. It is an interesting comparison with then and now.At the end of the book is a collection of old photos entitled "Savannah Memories".This is a self-published book as well. You'll not find this in book stores. The only drawback is the tiny size of most of the photos. Can you see it? Yes. Can you see it well? No. In fact, there were many details that looked like only a dot with the naked eye, but was actually an interesting something or other that we could see with a magnifying glass. Now in the author's defense, I can only assume that the tiny photos are a cost issue, since he self-published this book. Photos cost much more than text. All in all, it's a great book and very helpful. It's easy to follow and shares a lot of interesting facts. I highly recommend it, but for those wearing bifocals, take a magnifying glass with you.

I wanted to like this phamphlet - it had numerous small wonderful vintage photos and drawings of what Savannah used to look like. I was frustrated that many stops on the walking tours had photos of the newer current buildings along with photos of the wonderful older buildings no longer present. While it was interesting from the history stand point, I didn't find it as useful for walking tours. Still good, but not great.

I just returned from a 5-day visit to Savannah. I just about wore this book out. It gives you just the right amount of information to get around. It is also sold in every gift shop I went into. The book has 4 sections, each a walking tour with a map and photos & short blurbs about places of interest. There is also an overall map at the back of the book.I did not follow any of the tours exactly. I used the book to plan out my sightseeing and to look up places I walked by.Many times I came across a building, then looked at the book to see what it was. Each place also has a photo to help you figure out exactly what you are looking at/for.There are many tours available in Savannah and detailed information at each site - but this book gives you a good base.I highly recommend it!

I am an Indiana resident and I have a handful of travel guides for the state, all geared toward adult travel. Some of them include some kid-friendly tips and hints, but since our travels include our three children, I picked up this book up hoping for some new ideas. The foreward explains how the author and her family enjoy traveling, and she mentions how the book would not have been possible without the input of her children. Strangely, I found no input from said children anywhere. Unfortunately, the book is simply a listing, by region, of tourist attractions within the state. No real "review" of any sort is given for the attractions, simply an explanation of what it is, with some information about admission rates and hours. Nowhere did I see (and I did page through the whole book nonetheless) anything along the likes of, "our seven-year-old particularly enjoyed ..." or "this attraction probably isn't for children under the age of ....". To be fair, at the beginning of each section, the author does list their "Favorites" but this is comprised of a simple list with the names of four or five attractions, with no note as to what made them favorites. Honestly, this book was less family- and kid-oriented than some of the regular travel guides I already owned. I can get listings of area attractions and lodging via the state tourism office, and for free, thank you. I also found that listings for some places were simply missing - and these aren't necessarily obscure attractions. All in all, I am sorry to say this book was a huge disappointment. Save your money.

Second Home is the rare book that offers readers a true overview of life in America's boarding schools. Whether from a teacher or student, this collection of essays discusses everything from making friends to meals and chapel to art class. This is a book for those interested in applying to boarding school or for those interested in the various opportunities that exist in an institution as old as the nation. This is a fine piece of work.

An uninspiring collection of essays on present day life in American Boarding Schools. The book aims to follow in the footsteps of a number of distinguished paens to life in the English Public Schools. A surfeit of realism and an excess of youthful sincerity robs the essays of all interest. The result is a compendium neither erudite nor amusing. A sort of Lonely Planet Guide to boarding schools - except less informative. Do give it a pass.

Charles and Emma: The Darwins' Leap of Faith, by Deborah Heiligman

From School Library Journal

Starred Review. Grade 8 Up—Beginning with Darwin's notorious chart listing reasons to wed and not to wed, Heiligman has created a unique, flowing, and meticulously researched picture of the controversial scientist and the effect of his marriage on his life and work. Using the couple's letters, diaries, and notebooks as well as documents and memoirs of their relatives, friends, and critics, the author lets her subjects speak for themselves while rounding out the story of their relationship with information about their time and place. She shows how Darwin's love for his intelligent, steadfast, and deeply religious cousin was an important factor in his scientific work—pushing him to document his theory of natural selection for decades before publishing it with great trepidation. Just as the pair embodied a marriage of science and religion, this book weaves together the chronicle of the development of a major scientific theory with a story of true love. Published for young adults, this title will be equally interesting to adults drawn to revisit Darwin on his 200th birthday.—Ellen Heath, Easton Area Public Library, Easton, PA Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. From Booklist

*Starred Review* When the book opens, Charles Darwin is trying to make a decision, and he is doing so in time-honored fashion: drawing a line down a piece of paper and putting the pros of marriage on one side and the cons on the other. As much as Darwin is interested in wedded life, he is afraid that family life will take him away from the revolutionary work he is doing on the evolution of species. However, the pluses triumph, and he finds the perfect mate in his first-cousin Emma, who becomes his comforter, editor, mother of his 10 children—and sparring partner. Although highly congenial, Charles and Emma were on opposite sides when it came to the role of God in creation. Heiligman uses the Darwin family letters and papers to craft a full-bodied look at the personal influences that shaped Charles’ life as he worked mightily to shape his theories. This intersection between religion and science is where the book shines, but it is also an excellent portrait of what life was like during the Victorian era, a time when illness and death were ever present, and, in a way, a real-time example of the survival of the fittest. Occasionally hard to follow, in part because of the many characters (the family tree helps), this is well sourced and mostly fascinating, and may attract a wider audience than those interested in science. Austen fans will find a romance to like here, too. To be illustrated with photographs. Grades 8-12. --Ilene Cooper

Charles and Emma: The Darwins' Leap of Faith by Deborah Heiligman is exceptional. As a fan of science writing, biography, historical settings, and young adult literature, I felt like Charles and Emma was written just for me. The religious issues along with the romantic aspects brought drama to what might have otherwise been a traditional biography. The religious and romantic elements might also move some fiction readers toward nonfiction. Many adult biographies can be academic and dry, so I enjoyed the simple language, conversational style, and topical emphasis of this book written for young adults. I don't normally think of biographies as "page turners," but the story was a really "quick read."Heiligman wove interesting primary source materials and stories into the book. I particularly enjoyed the "to marry" and "no to marry" list. I could relate to this very analytical approach. I could also connect to his obsession with "knowing everything" about a particular topic such as his species studies.Combining the stories of Charles and Emma made the book unique. As I read the story I wondered about the impact of spouses on other scientists. I'd like to see other books taking this approach to biography. So much of YA literature focuses on realistic fiction (teen angst and melodrama) and fantasy (vampires, werewolves, dystopia) that it's great to see a book written for nerdy teens like I was! In publisher's quest for "high profit" books, they often forget that there's a market for engaging biographies, readable nonfiction, and quality storytelling outside traditional fiction categories. This book will never get the readership of the Twilight series, but there are teens in the world that aspire to be naturalists, scientists, and scholars that are thirsty for books like this. One sign of an exceptional book is the degree to which I think about the book later. Darwin seems to be everywhere I look. Darwin's 200th birthday was Feb 12 2010.I've always respected Charles Darwin for the many years he spent researching and reflecting on his theories before publishing. He truly wanted to "get it right." His approach to science and the development of arguments is a great example of critical thinking. There are some great websites devoted to his work. You can also visit Darwin's countryside on Google Earth. For a great overview with images go to http://www.darwinday.org/learn/Want to learn more? Go to http://www.darwinday.org/Beyond the book...I think it's important to introduce biography and Charles Darwin to children. For younger readers, I'd suggest the beautifully illustrated picture book "One Beetle Too Many: The Extraordinary Adventures of Charles Darwin" by Kathryn Lasky as a great introduction to Charles Darwin. For teens who enjoy this book, I'd recommend moving into quality adult nonfiction such as Erick Larson's The Devil in the White City, Isaac's Storm, or Thunderstruck.I enjoy reading about naturalists from the 1500s through the 1900s. For an engaging biography that takes place in the late 1600s, read "A Pirate of Exquisite Mind: Explorer, Naturalist, and Buccaneer: The Life of William Dampier" by Diana Preston. The biographies of Linda Lear would be a great way to introduce young adults scholars to adult literature. Read Beatrix Potter: A Life in Nature or Rachel Carson: Witness for Nature.Okay, so now you know I'm a nerd. We need more nerds in the world!

I used this book to teach evolution to my 8th grade science students. You'd be surprised at how capable 8th graders can be of having respectful discussion on this topic! It allows students with or without religious convictions to address their concerns by talking about how Charles Darwin did so. They were also able to think about how to relate to people on both sides of the debate by exploring Charles's respect for his wife Emma (and her support of him despite her disagreements). Our socratic seminar on the themes in this book allowed us to start our unit on evolution with an open mind and with an understanding of (and respect for) different viewpoints. The author also has a theater version of the book on her website, which was perfect for differentiation for english language learners or reading disabilities.

This is based mainly on the Darwin family's correspondence so it's easy to believe it's accurate. I have read several books about Darwin, along with trying to slog through his actual book Origin of Species which is really tough going. The book adds detail to other facts about Darwin found in other books. It especially discusses the complication caused by Emma's belief in heaven and Darwin's struggle with that. Interesting fact: They had ten children, seven of whom survived, and Emma had her last child when she was 48 years old. However, they had an astonishing number of household employees, so Emma was not exactly doing laundry and cooking for the family. Great read!

Picked for a book club read, not realizing it was geared toward a younger audience. Several of us really enjoyed it, though we all found the writing style very simple (just right to include the younger audience.) You get to know Darwin as "Charles", a husband and father, a human being in the context of a family; and are charmed and touched by his relationship with them. And the story of how his discoveries effected his beliefs and thus his relationships with those he loved most, keeps you enthralled, especially for people who have experienced the effects of differences in belief in their personal relationships with those they love, who have the context of the full depth of their emotions to draw from when they are only hinted at in the book. It follows the story of his relationship with Emma and family life from it's start to the ends of their lives, and his scientific work in the context of his daily life with his family. Simple and understated, drawing the picture from the historical sources, some in our book club longed for more, and it certainly could have been made more exciting as historical fiction, where you could have gotten inside their heads a bit more, but I find a beauty in the story told as simply as it was. When differences in belief so often spark contention that tears people apart, I found this a beautiful story of triumph of love for our fellow beings, in a striking place: one of the first couples to have felt the impact of the theory of evolution.I came away with greater respect for Darwin most deeply because of this one thing: his care and respect for the feelings of those whose religious devotion was disturbed by his theories. When after his death, Emma edited out certain passages of his personal writings, which were not intended by him to go public, because she said she thought people would take them the wrong way, at first you may think she is trying to clean up what she doesn't agree with. But I get the feeling from what you learn about the two, that more likely she knew that Charles didn't like offending and hurting people, and was more likely to withhold a thought of his that might be taken as being disrespectful or in mean spirit to others who held contradictory cherished beliefs. Not that he didn't feel justified in his beliefs, but that he would take the utmost care that others would not perceive the slightest mean spirit or disrespect in his intent. One thing that struck me was how being part of a distinctly upper class, the life Darwin led that enabled him to devote his time to his studies, was surely starkly different than the lives and constraints of those in the working and poorer classes. While this was not a theme brought out at all in the book (appropriately, as this was not the scope of the book), I couldn't help become aware of it while reading the account of what his daily life and home was like.Seeing Darwin's studies in the context of his home life, and ordinary daily musings and observations of the things around him, can also be a great model for the young scientists among us.

Review

“Smart, readable, deeply reported and researched, engagingly personal, funny and often surprisingly poignant.” - Jay Jennings, New York Times Book Review“[The Arena] covers everything from how those fighter jet flyovers sync with the national anthem to an inside look at the disease that is rabid fandom (in the chapter "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Gross"). Think of it this way: for less than the price of admission to most any of these stadiums, Kohan will let you travel from Wrigley to Lambeau to the Superdome in the most American way possible. Without ever having to leave the comfort of your couch.” - GQ“Fascinating….He comes across as the Studs Terkel of stadium life, demonstrating an easy camaraderie with his sources…It’s his sod-level reporting that animates the book, lending a distinctive blue-collar vibe of bantering co-workers who take pride in jobs well done―jobs like painting the logo on a playing field or combing over the bald spots in the ivy-covered outfield walls of Wrigley Field.” - Will Blythe, Wall Street Journal“The Arena is fun because of the author’s wit and style – a kind of gonzo/embedded journalism hybrid…But most importantly it’s fun because it is, metaphorically speaking, a circus mirror reflection of who we are as a nation 'psychologically, economically, politically, culturally, historically.'” - Christian Science Monitor“The Arena is an inventive, fast-paced look at what have become our modern shrines in a sports-obsessed society. But it artfully illuminates us - including the often quirky people flocking to these shrines - even more than the structures.” - Tom Verducci, Best-Selling Author, Sports Illustrated Senior Writer“This is an irresistible tour de force that reveals how and why our monuments to games are hard-wired to fans’ most thrilling and heartbreaking memories. A fabulous book.” - Don Van Natta Jr., ESPN, Pulitzer Prize winner, and New York Times best-selling author“Rafi Kohan’s terrific The Arena sees stadiums as a reflection of ourselves, in all of our glory, all our failings, and all our desires. It also made me want to go to a game, immediately.” - Will Leitch, author of Are We Winning? and God Save The Fan, senior writer Sports On Earth and founder of Deadspin“Kohan answers a central question: If every game is on TV, why do we still shell out hundreds to see them live? Hint: Even in this era of HDTV and disposable stadiums, we still need to be together. The Arena is a pioneering work of athletic anthropology―and just plain fun.” - John U. Bacon, New York Times best-selling author of Three and Out, Fourth and Long, and Endzone“An altogether new and riveting sports classic. A copy of Kohan’s brilliant, funny, illuminating book should be sealed in a vault beside every one of these places we go to yell ourselves hoarse, so that future archaeologists sifting through our ruins can understand who we were and why we gathered together.” - Josh Wilker, author of Benchwarmer and Cardboard Gods“An addictive, detailed look at the lives of sports arenas . . . . Kohan’s curiosity and empathy are infectious as he demonstrates how human this corporate aspect of sports can be. He has created an immersive, informative work that will delight and enlighten a wide range of readers.” - Publishers Weekly

A most enjoyable deep-dive into American sports culture. Kohan immersed himself in the world of the often overlooked aspects of our favorite past times (scalpers, concessionaires, sod-farmers, national-anthem-fly-over radio-guidance-airmen [yes!], mascots, half-time entertainers...) to bring us colorful, oft-times poetic, portraits seamlessly weaved together in this narrative. Not a simple paean to sports or a romanticization of the modern day coliseum, Kohan critically examines the history of these structures, and in a particularly insightful chapter, addresses the way that stadiums remain both literal and figurative battlegrounds for a host of divisive social and political issues. Kohan sketches out, with the same careful attention to detail throughout the whole book, just how and why a symbiotic relationship - easily characterized as creeping militarism - has grown between sports organizations and the US military, leaving the reader with much to chew on.For the casual reader and academic alike, I highly recommend this read and would look forward to more social histories & cultural examinations of the same sort. I'll certainly never see sports arenas in the same light ever again.

What a multifaceted and fun combination of anthropology and investigative reporting that illuminates so much of how our society is changing! I just hope the author's mother doesn't read about his experience with the scalper with a knife against Rafi Kohan's back. When you read what the author thought during those moments, you'll understand why the book is so great. This book makes you feel you are there from the executive suites to especially the streets. I thought my wide reading had given me a good idea of some of the subcultures that are covered in this book, but I gained a new and visceral sense of them.Professors of sociology, anthropology, business and public policy: assign this book and your students will actually read and enjoy it. It will provide great examples for discussion of issues and theories and you'll have better class discussions and course evaluations. This would also make a great book club book, again, great discussion potential about some worlds about which members probably know little, as well as new perspectives on those we think we do know.

You don't need to be a sports fan to enjoy this book. It was recommended to me by a friend as part of my summer/early fall reading list. The book has a lot of unique characters and funny narrative. I haven't traveled to most of these arenas, but I am fascinated by the spirit behind games and fans. I'll be picking up a copy for my little brother.

Terrific writing that will please every true sports fan. Shines a light on the many facets of how and why most cities take the plunge into providing public financing for arenas and stadiums to ensure retaining the sports teams that many feel they cannot do without and still be ranked a great city. Highlights the many quirky stories surrounding the nuts and bolts of what makes going to a game such a great experience and how it bonds people from all walks of life. From reports on ticket scalping to how the ivy is trimmed on the walls of Wrigley Field, as well as many other things that make game day what it is, this is a very entertaining book.

Have bought this twice now for two sports nuts and they seemed to really like it. Neither are avid readers but they really liked the subject. Very happy with this find.

I purchased a copy of this book for myself and couldn't put it down. I am a big sports fan and this book offered a new perspective on both the interesting details and also the big picture of sports stadiums. It felt like a road trip around the country to all of the greats with a friend who was smart and funny. It also offered great insight into America. I ended up buying copies for several family members and friends, and now just bought the paperback version as a holiday gift for a co-worker this year.

The idea for this book was interesting, and I wanted to like it more than I did. Some chapters were very interesting; some rambled; others were on topics that lacked depth. Overall, the content was hit or miss and I think each reader will take something different away from it.

This book is thoughtful and reflective. It is a great gift for anyone interested in in and off the field sports. The study of each arena is seen through a personal lense. Very enjoyable!
