Unlike the Kaplan or Princeton Review or even the Manhattan Prep books, the ETS ones are definitely the ones that come closest to the testing experience you will encounter for your GREs. Given that they are the test makers, I would highly recommend that you invest in mastering these questions toward the end of your prep. While the books are great for test prep, they do not provide much in terms of strategy.For those preparing for GREs on their own without a prep course (I didn't take one and I was fine. All you need is the right materials and determination. You'll save yourself thousands of dollars!), I would recommend:-Downloading the Magoosh vocabulary app on your phone. It's free-Reading through the Magoosh website for their free materials (they give sample essays and grades as well as tips and advice)-Borrowing the most up-to-date GRE prep books from your public library (Manhatten Prep workbooks and Kaplan are highly recommended)-Take a diagnostic test and find your weaknesses (which types of questions do you tend to get wrong)-Use the 5lb GRE Practice questions by Manhatten Prep and focus on your weaknesses.-Use this powerpack to familiarize yourself with actual test questions.

I am a Harvard grad, 99% GRE scorer and professional GRE tutor, and I'm fairly obsessed with this test. In fact, I still take the GRE at least once a year (last exam: 169V / 168Q / 5.5 AWA) to stay sharp and up-to-date.As many others have already indicated, you need these books because the included practice tests / questions are the real deal. The fact that Princeton and Kaplan GRE preparation books--full of fluff, filler, willful ignorance of the GRE official materials, and typos--sell better than the GRE Super Power Pack is an absolute shame. After many years of receiving scant practice material from ETS, I am relieved to say that ETS has now provided enough official materials for a nearly full preparation for the GRE, so the purchase of other learning and strategy guides can be kept to a minimum.I say "nearly" full because 2 CATs (computer adaptive tests) is not enough. The physical books are a nice asset, as are the paper-based practice tests, but for a computer adaptive test, you have to spend lots of time preparing on a computer. For this purpose I prefer to buy a single book from the Manhattan Prep GRE series (such as GRE Fractions, Decimals, & Percents (Manhattan Prep GRE Strategy Guides)) , in order to gain access to its 6 online CATs. No, they are not real GREs, but they are still decent for practice.It is worth noting that this is primarily a book for practice, not learning. The answer explanations in these books can sometimes be severely lacking, or in the case of the PowerPrep tests, nonexistent, which is part of why hiring a professional tutor can be helpful. However, for the disciplined and resourceful self-studier, these three books, the 2 (invaluable!) PowerPrep II CATs, a good vocab guide or two, a strategy guide (avoid Kaplan and Princeton--I prefer Barron's and/or Manhattan) and some third-party CATs should do the trick.HOW TO USE THE FREE GRE POWERPREP SOFTWARE FROM ETS:Test preview tool: This will allow you to try some practice questions as well as two essays.Timed Practice Test #1: This is your first official GRE practice test, and should be taken at the beginning of your preparation to establish a baseline score.Timed Practice Test #2: This is your only other real GRE practice test, so save it for the last few weeks of your preparation, as an unbiased, trustworthy measure of your progress.Untimed Practice Test: This is exactly what it sounds like, but I don’t recommend taking it because it’s exactly the same as Practice Test #1. After you’ve taken Practice Test #1, however, feel free to use the Untimed Test for additional practice on the tricky ones.The test preview tool is simply meant to help get you familiar with the test and software interface, not to mimic the actual timing of the test. The test preview tool provides 7 verbal questions in 30 minutes, which is 4.3 minutes per question, and 11 quantitative questions in 35 minutes, which is 3.1 minutes per question. By comparison, on the actual GRE, you only have 1.5 minutes per question on both the Quant and Verbal sections.To take a diagnostic test, click “Timed Practice Test 1” or “Timed Practice Test 2.”There is a row of buttons at the bottom of the software that says “Start Test / Resume Test / Review Answers:”Start Test = resets any old tests (WARNING! Be very careful not to click this button by accident--many students have made this mistake) and starts a new test. Because pressing just one wrong button on this test can delete all of your previous results, I recommend taking frequent screenshots, especially of your review screen, which lists all of your correct and incorrect responses. The test produced by Manhattan are not real GREs, but they still provide good practice and are of higher quality than most other imitation GREs. Most of the tips and strategies discussed in these books are discussed online for free on ETS website. The CD for the computer delivered tests provided in the pack is also provided for free online on the ETS website. The two individual quantitative/verbal reasoning books only offer 3 subject specific practice tests each (and basicallu repeats everything of the third general book which provides 4 tests). Only good thing is that these books offer real practice tests. It would be much more useful for ETS to offer more online practice tests, however, which are extemely useful to get quick scoring feedback and preparing properly for the compter delivered tests.

I had to retake the GRE after my old scores expired. I used another prep brand then and was not a fan. This pack had great reviews and it's made by the test makers themselves, so why not? It was a great decision. I scored higher than when I was in college. I loved the explanations of the questions. They were really helpful on the topics that were foggy from years of being out of academics. The practice exams look just like the regular exam and it was nice to see the formatting so I knew what to expect. I highly recommend these prep materials, even if you're in the middle of college now. Many of the questions are not even designed for you to figure out the answer, but to be able to reason the best choice quickly. Practice a lot and time yourself. Be sure to look up other free prep materials and pointers as well (Magoosh was a good supplement). Also, all of the potential writing topics are posted online. USE THEM.

I am currently studying for the GRE and plan to take the test in September. I have been working sedulously (you need to know this word lol) since January 1st 2017. This is the only resource I am using in addition to the Magoosh GRE Vocabulary App (Free in apple app store). The main book starts off with a sample prompt for the writing section and gives examples on a score 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, & 1 paper so that you can see how the scorers evaluate you. It also provides some guidelines on what test questions to expect from Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning. There is a Math Review that breaks down what concepts you need to understand. At the end of the book, there are 2 practice tests and a CD-ROM containing 2 digital practice tests. The Verbal Reasoning book & Quantitative Reasoning books contain many useful practice questions to help you prepare for the test. This is my 4th month studying and these 3 resources provided more than enough practice to fill my time. I recommend this prep pack if you're going to get just one resource to study from. I will take the test for my application to graduate school and am confident that I will get accepted. =]

This athletic tradition has deeper roots than some kids can imagine. A Passion for Victory seeks to tell the story of that tradition, starting with the Ancient Greeks through the early modern era.It opens with a chronology that highlights major events. The first story is about a man who survived the icy waters after the Titanic sank and went on to be an Olympic champion. The timing of that story is also notable because 2012 marks the 100 year-anniversary of the Titanic sinking.The first two chapters go into a lot of detail about the original Olympic games that took place in Ancient Greece. It compares those games to the modern ones. The next several chapters focus on the revival of the modern Olympic games in the 1800s, particularly the first 100 years. The epilogue focuses on the Olympics around WWII and includes several photographs. An appendix features lists of medal records won from 1896 to 1948.This book reads very much like a textbook and isn't as engaging as others I have read. The language used is more appropriate for older readers, which is why I have it classified as young adult and not so much as a chapter book. Also, discussions of Hitler and political topics are more appropriate for older students. These aspects of the Olympics are not as often discussed when talking about the topic. I did also notice much more discussion of women in the politics, as well. It is full of lots of information and resources for further study.I received a complimentary eARC in exchange for my honest review.

Pitseolak became an artist, drawing pictures of her life, when she was in her fifties, gaining international recognition.The drawings and prints in this book embody joy and energy and fancy. The interviews were done when she was in her sixties. Pitseolak describes an idylic world despite a harsh and bone-tiring camp life and the untimely loss of so many loved ones. Though she leaves out the dark side this holds true to how she interprets her world. She is charmingly frank within this world view.Though her second or third cousin, Peter Pitseolak's account, is more factual (I think), as (I think) her drawings are, the interviews are remarkable.Dorothy Harley Eber's preface provides additional information and insights.Her work in interviewing Pitseolak is also an interesting study.In the end, even though in her life Pitseolak worked collectively with her kinsfolk in camps and in the Cape Dorset print shop, and even though our interest as readers may be about Inuit culture, her personality and her individuality sparkle in a universal way.

I am a teacher and bought the book to read to my 2nd and 3rd grade students. Then I planned that we would draw and make self-portraits. The reviews were so strong I thought it would be a fabulous book. When I received it I was dismayed. The text is almost non-existent. It consists of poetic phrases such as, "I dream" and "I understand." Most of the pages have one word upon it like "search." The worst book to read to children, we will finish it in two seconds. The book tells nothing about the history of her life, her back pain, her ancestry, life in Mexico, her imagery and artworks, nothing. .. She was a strong woman who spent a large portion of her life painting in bed. There are no reproductions or artistic remakes of her art in the book either. However, the book is beautiful and does have very pretty photographs of dolls and illustrations. As an artist, I found it to be a rather stereotyped and generic view of the soulful inner being of an artist. I don't think it represents the soul and inner being of Frida Khalo herself. She was much more complex and beautiful than the story (words) in this book imply. The illustrations and photographs suggest a much more complex and interesting story, but one that is not uncovered fully in the book. It would have been more compelling to have the beginning part of the book have her in pain in bed painting and then have the book switch to her soul and magical imaginings.To show that she was a survivor who had a gorgeous inner life. It was not at all what I was looking for. If one already knows about Frida and her art, this is fine. Or if you seek a purely poetic book with no background information this is the book for you.

It has pretty illustrations, but no story and nothing to keep a child entertained.

This book is awesome I use it in a 2nd grade portrait lesson centered around personal symbols. This book is short and sweet with colorful images that help my students to later engage with some of her artworks. My favorite part of the book is the personal blurb written by the author that tells the story of Frida's life and why she paints included in both English and Spanish.

After seven decades in the South I suppose I think of my self as a veteran here and an amateur expert of sorts on the life and culture of this place. I consider the region's language and social dynamic and folkways complex and likely forever recondite to the outsider. I'm automatically skeptical, therefore, when I encounter a book that purports to describe some aspect of it, especially a book on the Mississippi Delta. The Mississippi Delta's northwestern tip was once said by none other than William Faulkner to lie in the lobby of the Gayoso Hotel (others claim the Peabody lobby), a statement borne out by facts to be more than plausible. Memphis, situated right on the DeSoto County/Shelby County line, is, in spirit, I think, more of a Mississippi city than a Tennessee town. The good people of Mississippi certainly don't really have another conurbation that I know of worthy of the title.Here in Memphis, inescapably, the congenital insanity of the Delta is well-known, legendary even. So, it was only after weeks of persistent urging by my wife, a Yankee by birth but an absolute Southern lit fiend by predilection, that I picked up Richard Grant's "Dispatches from Pluto". Good God Almighty! What a book! This book is so funny, so well-written, so perceptive, so spot-on, so damn good. I was gobsmacked by it. And to think it was written by a Brit with a New York girlfriend in tow!I've already bought a half-dozen copies for my friends and will probably wind up buying more. This fellow's take on the whole Delta thing is priceless. "Livin' in the Delta is like being in love with a crazy person," says one of his (real-life) lady characters as they pursue a road-trip through moribund, though ethnically cosmopolitan, little Mississippi towns. When you read the book you'll see how perfectly this statement captures the spirit of the Delta.I don't know, perhaps it requires the objectivity of a well-traveled foreigner to triangulate properly on such an otherworldly, socially complex locale, a singular, contradictory place whose oddities have grown opaque through custom and tradition, even to its own inhabitants. Indeed, perhaps specifically a worldly-wise Brit was the quintessential man for the job of laying it all out, especially the nagging situation of race and class, and doing so with exquisite humor and insight. In any case I heartily recommend this book. Just lemme say this: When you get it, take it slow, like you would a 30-year-old single-malt scotch, and savor every drop. You will not be disappointed. Meanwhile I need to write this boy a congratulatory letter.

I am always a day late and a dollar short. Well, two years short on this one, to be exact. This may be old news for someyall. I just finished this book and I could not put it down. I have to say this Richard did an amazing job on this book and I think it should be required reading for everyone.Now see, being from Mississippi everyone already has their assumptions about me. They group me in with the stereotypes. I have had people get in my face telling me all sorts of things they know about Mississippi: racial relations, our education system, our religion. I always say, YOU GO LIVE THERE, then you come back and we can talk about Mississippi. No one can possibly understand that state unless you have lived there. It is a state full of contradictions and bemusement. The author of this book moved himself into the Delta, Lord bless him. The Delta is it's own world within Mississippi, but a lot of what he says can be said for the state in general. He tells it like it is - you can't tie it up in a pretty bow.I remember when I was in high school (I went to church school, an academy and finally public school where I'll have you know that I was a minority!) I had a friend that grew up in the Delta and she told me that the Delta was still segregated and for the most part it was by choice! That blew my mind. But now when I look back, when we sat down in our own class rooms in the 90's all the black folk sat on one side and the white kids sat in a little group on the other side. My P.E. class was like Orange is the New Black but I was smaller and mo scared!I also want to clarify that my family was poor. My great grandmother and grandfather worked the farm, picked their own cotton, sun up to sun down (back breaking work). Great Granny always had dinner ready when Great Popaw came in from the field, they were lucky if they had a bit of meat to eat, but mostly just ate the vegetables they grew. She sure did have 3 cakes or pies every night though. My granny and my momma also helped her when they came along. I went in the cotton patch once - those things have spikes on them - I got out of there as fast as I could. But they had a small, ramshackle, shotgun house in the hills outside of Tupelo. We used buckets as sinks, a steel tub in the back yard as a bath, an electric well for water, black pot belly stove for heat, big electric fans for cold and an outhouse that scared me to death at nighttime. I come from a family of hard workers. I think a lot of divide in Mississippi can come down to hard workers and wont workers. I also think you need to read this here book. Richard, though he comes in as an "outsider" writes with the heart of a true Mississippian. He understands the culture, he grasps the divide and the confusion that goes on between black and white. My mom's best friend when I was growing up was black, people didn't mind staring. My mentor growing up was one of the most amazing men I have ever met, he was black, didn't bother me, I would not be where I am in life without his love and guidance. None of this had anything to do with color, but love and respect. But then you have those few and they exist on both sides....you just have to read this book to understand...he got it.

Richard Grant wrote a story based on facts of life in the South that could only be known by living in the Delta. After years of oppression the black people are often expected to "shake it off" and be thankful for their civil rights. At the same time we see racism is not just white toward black; but, we see it manifested in black toward White and Mexican, the same as the Mexican and Whites. I believe racism has been seen in most areas of our country as different nationalities learn to live together. Mr Grant pointed out the need for people to help themselves. To gain respect and acceptance one must take care of their own business. All of this was told in a story of two people moving from NYC to the Delta and learning to live together in a foreign culture. Great book.
