Gave as gift. Both the giver and recipient enjoyed the artwork and the words.

If you are interested in trying to understand the Inuit sensibility this is a great read. Pitseolak became an artist, drawing pictures of her life, when she was in her fifties, gaining international recognition. The drawings and prints in this book embody joy and energy and fancy. The interviews were done when she was in her sixties. Pitseolak describes an idylic world despite a harsh and bone-tiring camp life and the untimely loss of so many loved ones. Though she leaves out the dark side this holds true to how she interprets her world. She is charmingly frank within this world view.Though her second or third cousin, Peter Pitseolak's account, is more factual (I think), as (I think) her drawings are, the interviews are remarkable.Dorothy Harley Eber's preface provides additional information and insights. Her work in interviewing Pitseolak is also an interesting study. In the end, even though in her life Pitseolak worked collectively with her kinsfolk in camps and in the Cape Dorset print shop, and even though our interest as readers may be about Inuit culture, her personality and her individuality sparkle in a universal way.

Viva Frida (Morales, Yuyi), by Yuyi Morales

From School Library Journal

Gr 1 Up—Kahlo's unusual life story, background, and art have made her a frequent topic of biographies. Morales's perception of her creative process results in a fresh, winning take on an artist who has rarely been understood. The author uses strong verbs to give Kahlo voice: "I see (Veo)"; "Sé (I know)." Kahlo is depicted as a self-possessed woman with a drive to create. Her artistic process has room for others to participate, though—love, imagination, and dreams are closely entangled in her art. In the illustrations, Diego Rivera is shown creating alongside his wife. While the artistic process seems magical to readers, Kahlo knows what she is searching for. Each spread has just one or two words on it, both in English and Spanish. The text floats on the page, with the Spanish in a lighter color, adding to the ethereal, dreamlike feel of the book. Morales's art and O'Meara's photographs take this book to another level. Created with stop-motion puppets, paintings, and digital elements, these are amazing works of art themselves. The puppets are lifelike, resembling Kahlo (with her unibrow) and Rivera accurately. They are surrounded by the animals Kahlo loved, including vibrant feathered parrots, a monkey, and dog. Throughout the book, Kahlo goes searching for inspiration and finds it all around her. Morales incorporates many of the hallmarks of Kahlo's art into her own. The artist wears silver, open-hand earrings and multicolored dresses. She plays with a skeleton puppet on these pages and imagines herself soaring, freed from her fragile body. Morales's note in both English and Spanish describes her connection with Kahlo. A resonant title that can be used anywhere Kahlo's art is studied. It will also be admired in bilingual collections.—Susan E. Murray, formerly at Glendale Public Library, AZ

Review

“In this exploration of the imagery of artist Frida Kahlo, brief two- or three-word sentences provide dreamlike narration, and mixed-media images follow Frida as she discovers and opens a bright yellow wooden chest, releasing a fantasy in which playfulness leads to a knowledge, love, creativity, and ultimately, to her embrace of life.” ―BCCB“Morales artistically distills the essence of the remarkable Frida Kahlo in this esoteric, multigenre picture book.” ―Booklist“*There have been several books for young readers about Frida Kahlo, but none has come close to the emotional aesthetic Morales brings to her subjects . . . an ingenious tour de force.” ―The Horn Book, STARRED REVIEW“This luminescent homage to Frida Kahlo doesn't hew to her artwork's mood but entrances on its own merit . . . Visually radiant.” ―Kirkus Reviews“*Kahlo's unusual life story, background, and art have made her a frequent topic of biographies. Morales's perception of her creative process results in a fresh, winning take on an artist who has rarely been understood . . . Morales's art and O'Meara's photographs take this book to another level.” ―School Library Journal, STARRED REVIEW“STARRED REVIEW Frida is presented less as a historical figure than as an icon who represents the life Morales holds sacred; Frida lives because she loves and creates.” ―Publisher's Weekly

I am a teacher and bought the book to read to my 2nd and 3rd grade students. Then I planned that we would draw and make self-portraits. The reviews were so strong I thought it would be a fabulous book. When I received it I was dismayed. The text is almost non-existent. It consists of poetic phrases such as, "I dream" and "I understand." Most of the pages have one word upon it like "search." The worst book to read to children, we will finish it in two seconds. The book tells nothing about the history of her life, her back pain, her ancestry, life in Mexico, her imagery and artworks, nothing. .. She was a strong woman who spent a large portion of her life painting in bed. There are no reproductions or artistic remakes of her art in the book either. However, the book is beautiful and does have very pretty photographs of dolls and illustrations. As an artist, I found it to be a rather stereotyped and generic view of the soulful inner being of an artist. I don't think it represents the soul and inner being of Frida Khalo herself. She was much more complex and beautiful than the story (words) in this book imply. The illustrations and photographs suggest a much more complex and interesting story, but one that is not uncovered fully in the book. It would have been more compelling to have the beginning part of the book have her in pain in bed painting and then have the book switch to her soul and magical imaginings. To show that she was a survivor who had a gorgeous inner life. It was not at all what I was looking for. If one already knows about Frida and her art, this is fine. Or if you seek a purely poetic book with no background information this is the book for you.

It has pretty illustrations, but no story and nothing to keep a child entertained.

This book is awesome I use it in a 2nd grade portrait lesson centered around personal symbols. This book is short and sweet with colorful images that help my students to later engage with some of her artworks. My favorite part of the book is the personal blurb written by the author that tells the story of Frida's life and why she paints included in both English and Spanish.

Good book. Beautiful pictures

my 10 y/o daughter loves this book so much that she took it to school to share with her friends and she has decided she wants to be frida for halloween.

Yuyi Morales has created a love letter to Frida Kahlo. On this blog maintained by Julie Danielson http://blaine.org/sevenimpossiblethings/?p=3559Yuyi has generously detailed how she created this book. Also, it's bilingual.

A beautifully realized child's book introducing Freida Kahlo. Done in several mediums the artwork is dynamic and obviously inspired by Kahlo's work. Love it.

Really enjoyed this book. It is like reading a report on Frida, learned a couple of things I didn't know. Very happy with my purchase...Viva Frida!

Dispatches from Pluto: Lost and Found in the Mississippi Delta, by Richard Grant

Review

“The truest book about the Mississippi Delta since Rising Tide.” —Tony Horwitz, author of Confederates in the Attic“[Grant] succeeds, and with flair. His empathic manner, reportorial talent and eye for the unexpected detail make this a chigger-bitten trip that entertains as much as it informs.” —The New York Times Book Review"Grant takes a fillet knife and lays us open to the bone, like you might a catfish. He exposes our idiosyncratic insanity and brilliance, both the failure and the promise that are driven by an intimate yet remote love/hate relationship along the racial divide. It’s sad and beautiful at the same time." —Mississippi State Senator John Horhn“Readers with an appetite for a deep-fried version of A Year in Provence will find much to sate them here. … [Grant is] like a deeper and way funkier version of Peter Mayle. … it’s the individual voices and anecdotes he records that give Dispatches from Pluto its dissonant lilt and outré charm.” —Jonathan Miles, Garden & Gun“One of the best books to have been written about this part of Mississippi. Richard Grant has done something completely different from previous forays into this fascinating and frequently vilified part of America. … Grant’s book strikes a good balance between being partly A Year in Provence, Mississippi-style, and partly a searching investigation of the local culture. This is a man who has done his homework, asked hard questions, and made a point of getting to know everybody, white and black alike.” —The New Criterion“This book’s great virtue…is how it sets aside assumptions to look with clear, questioning eyes. Mississippi’s landscape, with its ‘crated little town(s)’ and ‘primordial interruptions in the empire of modern agriculture,’ is refreshed by Grant’s lovely prose.” —Jackson Clarion-Ledger“Part travelogue, part sociological study, part memoir, and part nonfiction heir to the works of William Faulkner and Tennessee Williams, Dispatches from Pluto is provocative in the best kind of way. Grant approaches his subjects with empathy, yet pulls no punches. The result is an honest, engaging account of life in one of America’s most beguiling, bewildering cultural outposts. This book is a revelation.” —Alan Huffman, author of Mississippi in Africa"An appealing stew of fecklessness and curiosity, social psychology and social dysfunction, hope and despair." —Kirkus Reviews“[A] delightful inside look at life on today's Mississippi Delta.” —Frans De Waal, one of his “6 favorite books” in The Week“Grant writes with an admiration and tenderness for his new home and neighbors. The book’s often riotously funny, particularly when describing real-life crime stories in Greenwood and elsewhere. But Grant’s also thoughtful and earnest in trying to understand race relations in modern-day Mississippi… Grant’s insights as an outsider trying to decipher a new world make this book compelling and also challenging. He’s confronting tough truths and asking hard questions, but from a place of genuine respect and love.” —Mississippi Business Journal

After seven decades in the South I suppose I think of my self as a veteran here and an amateur expert of sorts on the life and culture of this place. I consider the region's language and social dynamic and folkways complex and likely forever recondite to the outsider. I'm automatically skeptical, therefore, when I encounter a book that purports to describe some aspect of it, especially a book on the Mississippi Delta. The Mississippi Delta's northwestern tip was once said by none other than William Faulkner to lie in the lobby of the Gayoso Hotel (others claim the Peabody lobby), a statement borne out by facts to be more than plausible. Memphis, situated right on the DeSoto County/Shelby County line, is, in spirit, I think, more of a Mississippi city than a Tennessee town. The good people of Mississippi certainly don't really have another conurbation that I know of worthy of the title. Here in Memphis, inescapably, the congenital insanity of the Delta is well-known, legendary even. So, it was only after weeks of persistent urging by my wife, a Yankee by birth but an absolute Southern lit fiend by predilection, that I picked up Richard Grant's "Dispatches from Pluto". Good God Almighty! What a book! This book is so funny, so well-written, so perceptive, so spot-on, so damn good. I was gobsmacked by it. And to think it was written by a Brit with a New York girlfriend in tow!I've already bought a half-dozen copies for my friends and will probably wind up buying more. This fellow's take on the whole Delta thing is priceless. "Livin' in the Delta is like being in love with a crazy person," says one of his (real-life) lady characters as they pursue a road-trip through moribund, though ethnically cosmopolitan, little Mississippi towns. When you read the book you'll see how perfectly this statement captures the spirit of the Delta.I don't know, perhaps it requires the objectivity of a well-traveled foreigner to triangulate properly on such an otherworldly, socially complex locale, a singular, contradictory place whose oddities have grown opaque through custom and tradition, even to its own inhabitants. Indeed, perhaps specifically a worldly-wise Brit was the quintessential man for the job of laying it all out, especially the nagging situation of race and class, and doing so with exquisite humor and insight. In any case I heartily recommend this book. Just lemme say this: When you get it, take it slow, like you would a 30-year-old single-malt scotch, and savor every drop. You will not be disappointed. Meanwhile I need to write this boy a congratulatory letter.

I am always a day late and a dollar short. Well, two years short on this one, to be exact. This may be old news for someyall. I just finished this book and I could not put it down. I have to say this Richard did an amazing job on this book and I think it should be required reading for everyone. Now see, being from Mississippi everyone already has their assumptions about me. They group me in with the stereotypes. I have had people get in my face telling me all sorts of things they know about Mississippi: racial relations, our education system, our religion. I always say, YOU GO LIVE THERE, then you come back and we can talk about Mississippi. No one can possibly understand that state unless you have lived there. It is a state full of contradictions and bemusement. The author of this book moved himself into the Delta, Lord bless him. The Delta is it's own world within Mississippi, but a lot of what he says can be said for the state in general. He tells it like it is - you can't tie it up in a pretty bow.I remember when I was in high school (I went to church school, an academy and finally public school where I'll have you know that I was a minority!) I had a friend that grew up in the Delta and she told me that the Delta was still segregated and for the most part it was by choice! That blew my mind. But now when I look back, when we sat down in our own class rooms in the 90's all the black folk sat on one side and the white kids sat in a little group on the other side. My P.E. class was like Orange is the New Black but I was smaller and mo scared!I also want to clarify that my family was poor. My great grandmother and grandfather worked the farm, picked their own cotton, sun up to sun down (back breaking work). Great Granny always had dinner ready when Great Popaw came in from the field, they were lucky if they had a bit of meat to eat, but mostly just ate the vegetables they grew. She sure did have 3 cakes or pies every night though. My granny and my momma also helped her when they came along. I went in the cotton patch once - those things have spikes on them - I got out of there as fast as I could. But they had a small, ramshackle, shotgun house in the hills outside of Tupelo. We used buckets as sinks, a steel tub in the back yard as a bath, an electric well for water, black pot belly stove for heat, big electric fans for cold and an outhouse that scared me to death at nighttime. I come from a family of hard workers. I think a lot of divide in Mississippi can come down to hard workers and wont workers. I also think you need to read this here book. Richard, though he comes in as an "outsider" writes with the heart of a true Mississippian. He understands the culture, he grasps the divide and the confusion that goes on between black and white. My mom's best friend when I was growing up was black, people didn't mind staring. My mentor growing up was one of the most amazing men I have ever met, he was black, didn't bother me, I would not be where I am in life without his love and guidance. None of this had anything to do with color, but love and respect. But then you have those few and they exist on both sides....you just have to read this book to understand...he got it.

Richard Grant wrote a story based on facts of life in the South that could only be known by living in the Delta. After years of oppression the black people are often expected to "shake it off" and be thankful for their civil rights. At the same time we see racism is not just white toward black; but, we see it manifested in black toward White and Mexican, the same as the Mexican and Whites. I believe racism has been seen in most areas of our country as different nationalities learn to live together. Mr Grant pointed out the need for people to help themselves. To gain respect and acceptance one must take care of their own business. All of this was told in a story of two people moving from NYC to the Delta and learning to live together in a foreign culture. Great book.

Overall, this is an excellent guide. It gave us good hotel recommendations (we went through Riga twice on our trip, as Riga is AirBaltic's hub and so tried two hotels) and good suggestions for things to tour. Two limitations. First, the maps are weak -- most of the Art Noveau tour is off the maps in the back so youhave to orienteer (or grab a tourist map at a hotel) to get to the right part of town (after which you can followthe walking map). Second, I think the book overplays the virtues of Riga's old town (which pales in comparisonto Stockholm or Tallinn) and doesn't emphasize enough the need to step into the 19th century town (theArt Noveau tour and the Central Market) and visit places (such as the open air museum) that are a short distance away.

This book's information is 8 years old. So much of what it says cannot be trusted -- especially prices now that Latvia uses the Euro. It also lacks illustrations and has few photos. Even so, it's small size makes it easy to pack, and I'll verify what information still applies when I get there.

I bought this for my mom, who is from Riga but now lives in the US. I thought she'd like to see a reminder of all the sights. The writing is fine, but I really wish it had more photos and maps. We're visual people!

I love the size of this publication, the information presented and photos inside. I hope to use the info for an upcoming trip.

This guide is from 2004 and has very little in the way of maps, recommendations etc. and then they are probably out of date anyway after 12 years.

A mild and slightly depressing retelling of a classic comedy. The character development is crude, and there were really no tense or exciting moments. The imagery helps make up for the the lack of character complexity and blasé story development. Overall it was a mildly amusing distraction occasionally bordering on tedious.

Not gripping like some of her others. Still haven't finished it.

I love how the story of twelfth night continues on with the children. Shakespeare is a major part in this story. Feste is also here....I thought it was a retelling, but it's like a sequel. Very detailed and well written.

Another great read from Celia Rees. Sovay was the first of her books I read and I fell in love. I recommend both books!

One of my favorite authors and this book did not disappoint!

If you are a fan of Shakespeare's 12th night, this story will take your affection for that story & crush it.I'm not sure why the author felt that in order to have a new love story, she needed to trash the one which is was built on.The story does get a happy ending, but for me it was more bitter than sweet. This story is gritty, unpleasant & depressing. The reader has a front row seat to the unraveling of the romance of 12th night and it is tedious & painful. so what happens in the book ?Feste & Duke Orsino (& Violet's) daughter run around & meet all the old 12th night characters.***************spoilers**************Violet :it seems to be implied that she commits suicideOlivia: It seems to be implied that she commits suicide AND liked Violet more than Sebastian. Possibly Lesbianism feelings for VioletSebastian: drunkard & BFFs (& maybe something more?) with Antonio . Ignores Olivia & joins with Pirates & Venetians to make war on Illyria, he sells his son & his niece into slavery .Duke Orsino : Ignores Violet & is immersed in being a Duke & in preparing for war. He is killed when Sebastian's pirate/Venetian army bombard their way into IllyriaSir Toby: same as always, finally dies penniless & inebriatedMaria (his wife) helps Violetta , Stephano & FesteSir Andrew: turns out to be evilMalvoleo :is out for revengeWilliam Shakespeare: jumps into the story & interacts with Violetta & Feste

The better you know Shakespeare's comedies "Twelfth Night, ""As You Like It," and "A Midsummer Night's Dream," the more you will get out of this ambitious and intriguing story for teen readers. The first part of the book wobbles as bit, changing narrators and mixing present action with gritty flashbacks. Once the story settles down (however implausibly) in Shakespeare's London, it becomes more centered, eventually turning into a real page-turner.Celia Rees does a masterful job of bringing to life William Shakespeare, his troupe of actors, and his wife Anne. She creates a convincing picture of the intrigues of the Elizabethan court and the landscape of southern England. Unfortunately, the Illyrian characters, including the heroine, Violetta, are a little less real, even (I hate to say it) a little Disneyfied, and so are their enemies. On the other hand, the denizens of the Stratford area are delightfully Tolkien-esque (the books, not the movies).I suspect "The Fool's Girl" is a book that will be even more enjoyable on a second reading, when one knows where the story is heading. There are many other YA books about Shakespeare and his acting troupe; including Susan Cooper's time-travel story "King of Shadows" and Harry Turtledove's alternative-history "Ruled Britannia." A thoughtful young reader might want to read and compare several of these. They all have a similar message, that Shakespeare could not have written such enduring masterpieces if he had not been a deeply humane, compassionate, and courageous person.

Twelfth Night was the first Shakespeare play I ever saw, and it remains my very favorite. I was in seventh grade and had been nervous about my own capacity to understand Shakespeare's language. But as soon as the local university production of the comedy began, I was instantly hooked by the romance, the humor, the mistaken identities --- and, yes, by the language, too. The quick-witted Viola, the pompous Malvolio with his ridiculous yellow stockings, the boisterous Sir Toby Belch, and the surprisingly complicated Fool, Feste, all combined to make me fall in love with the Bard. And apparently I'm not alone in my affection for Twelfth Night. Popular author Celia Rees has used the play as the inspiration for her new novel, THE FOOL'S GIRL, providing in her typically detailed, well-researched style both a sequel of sorts to the play and a dramatic explanation of how and why Shakespeare chose to dramatize this story.Short version of Shakespeare's play: Shipwreck victim Viola washes ashore, disguises herself as a boy to gain entry to the court of Duke Orsino, who pines for the countess Olivia even as Viola secretly longs for Orsino himself. When he sends the disguised Viola to plight his troth, Olivia falls for the young messenger instead. Much confusion ensues, but ultimately Orsino and Viola are wed, as are Olivia and Viola's long-lost twin brother, Sebastian. In Rees's novel, Illyria, where Twelfth Night is set, is a real place, known primarily for its possession of a holy relic, the container in which one of the Magi brought a gift to the infant Jesus. But Malvolio, who, since the events eventually memorialized by Shakespeare, has become not only arrogant but also cruel, has stolen the relic and, in the wake of a rebellion staged by Sebastian, left Illyria for England with prisoners in tow. He's bent on seizing another mystical item --- a fortune-telling stone --- and on making life as miserable as possible for Violetta (daughter of Orsino and Viola) and Stephano (son of Olivia and Sebastian). Violetta, accompanied by Feste, is determined to retrieve the relic and restore it to her home country (and, she hopes, restore Illyria's fortunes as well). She and Feste have hatched a plan for the young playwright William Shakespeare to help them. But is it possible that Violetta's childhood friend Stephano has betrayed her? Can she trust him with her secrets --- and with her heart?Rees's affection for Shakespeare's play shines through every page of THE FOOL'S GIRL. She has provided readers with countless well-researched details about Shakespeare's London, the culture of Elizabethan performance, and the plays themselves. Told in an engaging narrative style that travels forward and backward chronologically and that allows a half-dozen characters to share storytelling duties, the novel unfolds briskly and suspensefully. Like Shakespeare's plays, it treads the line between lyrical and bawdy, as Rees uses earthy humor that would undoubtedly have appealed to Shakespeare's audiences as much as it will to the youth of today.Although THE FOOL'S GIRL will be of most interest to students who have already read Shakespeare's play, it can still be read and enjoyed by those who long for romance, drama, and a heady mix of history, magic and literature. --- Reviewed by Norah Piehl
