Classic and amazing.

This is a must read book!! But I will say that I have a totally different point of view to the story than what most, in fact, all the reviews and editorials I have seen. I am not a bookworm and so the idea that books are gone is not an apocalyptic idea. The book was written before the internet and the information age. It is WHY the books are burned and WHAT the books represent that should open your eyes and minds while reading this book.If all you get out of this book is the "removal" of books from society to become more connected to our electronic devices I feel so bad for you.The point of burning the books is explained. I might give just a couple of spoilers, but everyone knows the premise of 1984 and this book is similar. It is so much more than about books.It is about censorship and the people wanting it. The government has banned all printed material except for comic books, 3D pornographic magazines, "good old confessions" and trade journals. All other printed material is deemed too offensive to someone. So much in-fighting in society because everyone claiming something offends them. So to make everyone happy, the offensive materials are removed. Because of the year this was written (1953) Ray Bradbury could have not envisioned the internet. If he had, it would have been heavily censored also. In 1953 ideas and knowledge were shared through print as they had been for hundreds of years.According to the book, the people wanted the offensive materials removed. Because everyone is offended by something then everything is offensive, it must all be destroyed.For me the novel rings true about how easily people are offended by another person's ideas, thoughts, actions, beliefs. In the story those things are still allowed (they can't control what you think), but without being able to write them down ideas and thoughts die pretty fast.Ultimately the story is about freedom and not being so judgmental of others lest ye be judged. If you look around today, 11/4/2017, this story has never been more relevant. We have protests and attacks in the streets daily based on ideals and beliefs that clash with others. These clashes occur, rather than people going their separate ways and understanding that the beliefs and ideals of others are just as legitimate as their own. Some groups would rather have a scorched earth policy and destroy everything they hold dear, as long as the other side loses everything as well.

The author of Fahrenheit 451 is Ray Bradbury. He has written several other books including The Illustrated Man, A Sound of Thunder, and Dark Carnival. This book is considered to be fiction. The title fits in with the book because 451 Fahrenheit is the temperature at which the books burn at. I believe it adequately encapsulate the message of the text because the whole story is revolved around burning all the books in the town. The author does a very good job at setting up a table of contexts for you. I would say the book is arranged in sections because there is only three. There are ten characters in the story; their names are Guy Montag, Mildred Montag, Captain Beatty, Professor Faber, Clarisse McClellan, Granger, Mrs. Phelps, Mrs. Bowles, Stoneman and Black. The main characters are Guy Montag, Mildred Montag, Beatty, and Faber. The main idea of this story is Guy Montag tries to explain to everyone and his fire chief that books are useful and they shouldn't be burning them, but to be reading them. Guy Montag and Professor Faber try to come up with a plan to overthrow the status quo of books being illegal. Montag only has 24 hours to be able to read any book and then after that he has to return them back to Captain Beatty. I think this is very different from any other book we would read because normally you don’t see reading books as a negative thing. Most people would write about how people need to get up and go enjoy nature or books rather than sitting inside watching television. I agree with Guy Montag for standing up for what he believes in. I think the tragic accident with the seventeen year old girl who thought books were important really got his attention. A huge surprise happens when Guy’s own wife calls the police on him to be arrested for having books in their house. Mrs. Montag gets in a cab with her suitcase and leaves. While Mr. Montag is left to burn his own house down and all of the copies he made of the books. Captain Beatty tries to attain him by sticking him with anesthetic but he destroys the machine in the fire and escapes with some copies. Montag was able to make it downstream and ran into a group called “renegade intellectuals” this group of individuals also have a love for books. They watch the war that was created from afar and see everything get destroyed with bombs. The group moves on and tries to find some civilization to rebuild a community with them. This book was very interesting to read because of how different it was. I would recommend this book to someone else just have a good read. Fahrenheit 451 was published by Ballantine in 1953. A good compilation of Dr Fung's online information regarding obesity, diabetes, insulin resistance and the physiological effects of fasting. Not much of a 'guide' to implementing the fasting protocols. Expected a detailed guide/roadmap for each of the fasting protocols, relative to various health issues and goals.

I am a health care professional. I have been reading about intermittent fasting and Dr. Jason Fung for quite some time. After a rather lackluster go with the 5:2 regimen, I was weary. But then I talked to a friend who said it is legit and to try eating between a 12 and 8 pm window. The biggest hurdle was psychological by far. So I did it. And it was easy. I read The Obesity Code first and just had to read this one. This one was the favorite of the two. I loved the testimonials. I loved the before and after test results, the science and I loved how he laid out what the rules are and several different ways that you can incorporate fasting into your life. I am convinced this is what is needed to reverse chronic disease and diabetes. I don't have much weight to lose, but I lost over 15 pounds so far. I am a foodie and wine lover so when I say I love food, I love food. And this was easier than anything I've ever tried. I started with an eight hour window and consistently lost two pounds a week. Then I started condensing it into a smaller window and then tried a 24 hour window. At work, this is easy. Did I mention it was easy? When you see the results on the scale, it does motivate you to keep going (assuming you aren't eating complete processed crap when you do eat).. I just went on vacation and fasted for four days after I returned. I ate (and drank) to my heart's content on vacation and four days later I weigh less than when I left. You feast and then you fast.Every time I tell someone about this, their first response is that there is no way they could do it. Stop the excuses!!!! If you want to lose weight, get healthy and fit into those clothes that you can't fit into anymore, do this. Try it. You have absolutely nothing to lose. It truly makes your life easier and it's free to not eat. We are just not meant to eat all the time.

Wow, I found the magic button for weight loss. After having limited success with the whole field of dieting options I stumbled across a talk on youtube by Dr Jason Fung talking about fasting. After the video I searched and ended up buying the audio book and the hard copy. The concept initially terrified me for some reason and when talking to friends who fasted I just shook my head and though there is no way I could do that. One of the fasting approaches recommended however seemed pretty easy. Have dinner and fast for 24 hours, having dinner the next day. I have done that accidentally at times! Well after a 6 days of doing this, I lost 10 lbs (40 to go) and realized that what I thought was breakfast or lunchtime hunger was just my body reminding me of a long held habit of eating I have had. It is incredible that over such a short fast you can turn off insulin based fat storage, and start burning fat. A side benefit is that increased metal clarity occurs fairly quickly and offers additional incentive to fast. Also my moderately elevate blood pressure is getting back to normal. Leads me to think that we have a obesity problem in the country because people eat 3 meals a day and insulin based fat storage never turns off. This is another area where the industrial food business exploits us in their marketing and so called guidelines. I am now convinced there is absolutely no need for 3 meals a day.Now the book recommends starting out the 24 hr fasting for a couple of days per week. I have decided to do it 5 or 6 times per week. I am pretty confident I can now get to any weight I want. I think the book is important in that it helps you break long held thoughts and misconceptions about eating and going without food. It also discusses other lengths of fasts that can range from 36 hour to weeks. It is so flexible you can do it anytime. And if I am fasting one day, and my friends invite me over for breakfast, or lunch no problem I will forget about fasting that day or have breakfast, but forget about lunch. In my opinion most people who have access to food have never experienced hunger, just mealtime urges. These urges are easy to identify and ignore after a few days (at least for me).I listened to the audio book first and then used the book for reinforcement for changing my thinking. There is quite a bit of repetition but this was necessary for me to truly break long held conventional thinking.Basically you are eating less food when only eating once per day. By having a long break between meals you body has time to get into fat burning mode. So while it seems like a magic button, it is not magic at all. You just have to forget about everything you have ever been taught or thought you knew about eating. This book is a great tool to change habits and conventional thinking.I will try to come back after I reach my goal weight and give an update. But I have no doubt that this is the solution that will allow me to control my weight to whatever level I choose. Read the book. It will change your life!

Since this book was suggested when I was searching for Egyptian Mythology for kids, I assumed it would be written for kids to read themselves. However, the way it is written is a bit too advanced for a grade school-aged child to read on his/her own. There are some advanced concepts and language used that I often have to describe to my daughter. That aside, we both enjoy this book. It is a beautiful hard cover, with many pictures and descriptions. It is most definitely not a one-time read for us, either. We will continue to enjoy this book in future studies, as well.

I am a 7th grade language arts teacher and I could not wait for this book to arrive. I already own Napoli's Treasury of Greek Mythology, and her Egyptian storybook is equally as wonderful as the Greek one. Napoli writes with such a compelling sense of voice that readers are pulled into the stories. Egyptian mythology is complicated, especially to young readers, but Napoli is a masterful storyteller and she is able to create such beautiful, accessible stories from a complex, ancient set of stories. She has clearly done her research, as there is a really helpful section explaining information such as the origins of names, the variations of details over time and her decision process as she wrote, how the Greeks influenced the stories and names. The stories also have inset boxes with nonfiction information about details related to the stories -- funeral practices, mummification, hieroglyphs, building of pyramids, legally accepted practices at the time, desert life, etc). The illustrations are gorgeous. I would say this book is geared for middle school and above readers, but would be well suited for read-alouds with younger children. It's a must-have for anyone teaching about ancient Egyptian society and mythology. Love, love, LOVE this book!!!

This book is a great introduction to Egyptian mythology, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It includes different stories, each about a different god, that tell the story from the gods' point a view (meaning that the author "liked" what that particular god liked, and "hated" what that particular god hated in that chapter). The illustrations are beautiful, and only add to it. Unfortunately, the author added feelings and thoughts that weren't felt or thought in the original stories as the Egyptians told them, and only included stories about the most interesting or main gods; Ra and Tefnut (completely leaving out her brother Shu), Aset, Set, Usir, Nebet Hut, Heru Sa Aset, Inpu, Tehuti, Heru Wer, Hut Heru, Sekhmet, Nit, Khnum, Imhotep, Sobek, and Bastet (leaving out the other animal gods Maftet, Taweret, Hapu, and Heket). She also left out Nut and Geb, but that's fine as they never do anything (they're the sky and the earth), and Satet. And my final opinion: this is a great book that I highly recommend, and even though she left out quite a few gods, I think the ones she left out aren't completely needed. Also, the added feelings and thoughts give more life to the story, making it more engaging for older readers. I think that you'll love this book.

Simply LOVE IT! The binding, the artwork, the tales, the quality of the paper.. every detail of this book makes it wonderful! I was looking for a book like this since it's perfect for children. It makes it fun for them to read. The only thing is that some of the vocabulary is a bit advance so you will definitely need to read it to them.I bought also the Greek and Norse mythology and will definitely buy the Tales from the Arabian Night too.Click the button if this review helped you at all. :)

While I wish they used Egyptian rubrics for the artistic depictions, it does a good job of introducing Egyptian mythology without being overly graphic (for example, it doesn't say which of the pieces of Usir was missing). I love that they use the Egyptian names instead of the Greek, as well.

I used this book with a group of children ages 7-12 and they loved it. Beautifully illustrated.

The book is a terrific piece of history, well-researched and well-referenced. There are a lot of myths and misinformation about the PA, why it was founded, what it's original mission was, how and why that mission evolved over time. This book provides a great source of documented facts.It's a fascinating story..

If you're into history of NY this is an intersting book, politics and money wins all.

This book provides a pretty good history of the much-maligned Port Authority. One of the book's main strengths is Mr. Doig's ability to weave together biographies of key PA players with the pressing issues that have confronted the PA during its 80+ years. The PA was the first of the so-called authorities: deliberately established to avoid the usual political "game." As such, it has offended many important political leaders, clipping their wings on a range of issues. I think that Mr. Doig addresses this nicely, exposing the provincialism that is common in New York and New Jersey. On a critical note, I think that Mr. Doig spends a little too much time on abstract political theory.

Great book for anyone interested in NYC history. Made a great gift.

This guy just wanted to sell a book with his opinions. Poorly written, content poor.I'm Slovenian and this is an embarrassment!

Melania Trump: Slovenian side of the story by Sandi Gorisek is a book about one of the most important and controversial personalities in modern history, the first lady of the United States of America, the wife of the television icon and real estate mogul turned politician, Donald Trump. It is true that a lot is being written about Donald Trump and one would love to find out more about the woman who stands behind him. Sandi Gorisek promises to offer great insights into her personality, drawing from a shared Slovenian culture.I did enjoy some of the revelations in this book and the social commentary the author makes. However, I got the feeling that he could have done more research and explored the work better. It is a short book that will inform many people who haven’t read much about the First Lady. The particular angle that sets this book aside from many works of this nature is the author’s ability to situate the First Lady within a culture that he knows so well. The writing could have been tightened with some editing. That said, it was a good and quick read.

This reads like Slovakian propaganda. The book wants you to believe that Melania is somehow worthy of being Trump's third wife. No depth just some fluff by a friend of the family.

The writer of this book is so genuine when he talks about Mrs. Trump, which is inspirational, since it is coming from a place that isn’t seen much. I didn’t know anything about Slovenia before reading this, but now I feel like I have a basic understanding of the culture and attitudes of the area for the past 40 or so years. I don’t think they are as different from some of the cities as the US as some would believe, which makes it even more relatable. My favorite part was reading about how she and all other kids grew up in a time when everything was changing, and there had to be some structure and rules after one of the most confusing times in history. This isn’t something that really has underlying politics, so if you want to read about where the First Lady is from, this is something that can teach you a couple of things from an authentic source.

Ever since the contentious election of Donald Trump, it seems as though the media can do nothing except talk about anything and everything the former business mogul says or does. Less attention has been paid to his wife Melania, the former model from Slovenia. Most articles on the new First Lady focus on her fashion sense, which is excellent and worthy of praise. However, one of her countrymen decided to add a few more details into Melania's story by connecting her rise to the history of her homeland.The book itself is very short, but it gives an account of how a young Slovenian like Melania would have grown up in the communist country that was formally Yugoslavia. He praises her mother's bold stance in allowing her daughter to stand out in a time when it was better to blend in. He also explains some of the cultural and historical attitudes of the Slovenians. Some of it is a reflection that the Slovenians have rarely been masters of their own destinies, but they did not find this situation as intolerable as other nations have. However, he also points out that when Slovenians have to get something done, they will do it with the quiet strength and conviction that Melania Trump showed when she spoke at the Republican National Convention. The author hopes the connection to Slovenia will help Melania in her supportive role as First Lady to the 45th president.It should be noted that English is not this author's first language and this is his first English book. Thus, the writing is rather simple, although that didn't really bother me. My only real complaint is that I wish it had gone into a few more details about Slovenian culture and life, especially regarding the cyber bullying aspect that Melania has taken up. The book is a short, enjoyable read overall and if you want to learn a little more about the First Lady, then this is a good place to start.

I won’t lie I was very unsure about this story. I hate to say it be I had prejudge and categorized Melania Trump without really knowing anything about her. If I did have information it was from news articles and those can always be manipulated to make a certain point. She is our First Lady and deserves the benefit of the doubt. It gives me a great sense of where she grew up. It only gives the reader a vague sensibility of her, but the country’s culture and how the people their developed was a new take. I like how they use Melania Trump as an example, but I don’t like how impersonal it was from Melania Trump’s story. I think Melania Trump could be a great raising up story that is inspiring, but there is a lack of her personal story. I was hoping to understand her more or at least a better relatable understanding. I think I had a different understanding of how this would go and that’s why I struggled with taking something more away from this.

This short book is written by someone who grew up in the same area of Slovenia and has a similar background to Melania Trump, First Lady of the United States. It is important to remember when reading this book that it's not a full biography packed with facts, but rather an overview of Slovenian culture and the author's perspective on how it affects Melania Trump. This book is a quick read, and will give the average American with no knowledge of Slovenia (like myself!) insight into Melania's background, likely views, and mindset. It's good for those looking for more information on Slovenia in general. I will note that English is likely not the author's first language, which is understandable. A good editing team would be helpful, but to me it actually adds to the "feel" of the book.

I like all of Michael Connelly's books and in the past I have had a special fondness for his standalones, but The Reversal may well be his best ever. The premise: Lawyer Mickey Haller has been asked by the D.A. to prosecute a case in which the previously-guilty perp's case has been reversed. The case is more than two decades old and Mickey has concerns. He's always been on the defense side of the aisle and prosecuting is alien to all of his instincts. Moreover, he wonders if the D.A. is dodging the case and setting Mickey up for some great fall. He agrees to take the case but only if he can have sufficient independence to do things his way and only if he can appoint his own team. Mickey wants his ex-wife Maggie to be his #2 and he wants his half-brother Harry Bosch to be his investigator.The case is fairly simple. A young girl, dressed up for church, was abducted and found dead in a dumpster shortly thereafter. There is some DNA on her dress which doesn't match the prime suspect's, but there are several strands of her hair found in his truck. He was at the scene and he was familiar with the location of the dumpster in which her body was found. An eyeball witness (the little girl's older sister) identified him as her abductor. Since then, however, she has led a dysfunctional life of drink, drugs and bad men and the defense team intends to challenge the accuracy of her memory.The plot is not convoluted and endlessly complex; it is, instead, a very close examination of a limited number of facts. It is very much like a `Prime Suspect' episode, but with dual protagonists. It is also a superb courtroom drama. For those who love such books and relish the writings of Steve Martini, we now have Michael Connelly working that turf (and not a minute too soon, as Steve Martini is now writing suspense/espionage books).The Reversal is Mickey's novel more than Harry's, though Connelly cuts between the two of them in alternating chapters. Mickey's sections are told in the first person, Harry's in the third-person/omniscient. The architectonics of the plot are very, very impressive and the courtroom lore/strategizing/maneuvering are delicious. Connelly is writing more like a lawyer than a journalist. The characters are interesting, particularly the smarmy, British defense attorney and Maggie `McFierce' McPherson, Mickey's ex. The witnesses all speak in their own unique voices and the judge is precisely the sort you would choose to adjudicate your own case if you were accused of murder.This is very impressive work. Un-put-downable. Perhaps the book of the Fall, though the new Lee Child and Dennis Lehane are looming on the horizon.Highly recommended.

Justin Jessup was accused and arrested for the murder of a 12 yr old girl in 1986. There was a witness to the abduction, the sister, who also identified him in a lineup.Move forward a few years, DNA is on the scene. A semen stain on the dress leads to the girl's stepfather and the Supreme Court throws out the conviction, telling the LA courts to retry him. Looks like a slam dunk that he will be acquitted, right?Mickey Haller is asked to cross the aisle and be the prosecutor for the case. Harry Bosch is his investigator, and his ex-wife is second chair. There is quite a different way of thinking between the prosecutor and defense attorney, but he does his job very well. So well that---surprise!!There is the possibility that Jessup may have been a serial killer, because at that time, several girls between 12-18 just fell off the face of the earth. Bosch is determined to find out. But something horrific happens after court.

I like reading a series of books with one main character. I get to know them. I have therefore read all of Michael Connelly's books centered on the Detective Bosch. Because I finished all of them I tried other authors with less success and then returned to read some of of his other books of Conelly's centering on other characters. I like Bosch the best (when he was active in the police department), the Lawyer Haller was good, and the the reporter was McElroy was also ok. This book however, which is really about the lawyer Haller is the best of all because it engages several of the characters I have come to know. Haller is the focus of the book of course, but Bosch has a major roll and the FBI profiler makes a major contribution. The book was detailed enough in its story that you knew what was happening and it felt possible, it had sufficient character interactions and development to hold interest beyond the story, and the story ended with the unexpected. My favorite of his books so far.

This book made me a better lawyer. Both the tactics and the cross examination dialogue are spot on. I caught only one error -- most modern courts have dispensed with the "You can't cross examine your own witness" rule. Also, Royce, the defense attorney, should have figured out how to signal to Roman the the silent witness could not testify, perhaps by loudly demanding her sequestration. Otherwise, the courtroom recreation was brilliant. The twisty ending was fine as well, although I would have liked a little more insight into the defendant. The weakest part of the book was the explanation of how the jury would have come out. A junior's statement to the press is one thing. His actions in the jury room are another. Overall, though, an excellent book. I urge all aspiring and practicing trial lawyers to read it.

I have been reading Connelly's Bosch series from beginning to end. I came next to the Reversal, which is primarily a courtroom drama featuring Mickey Haller. But Bosch is the case investigator. So he features prominently in this book. First of all, it's a Michael Connelly novel -- that about says it all. He has a crisp writing style with rich character development and a tight and complicated plot that keeps the reader engaged and guessing to the end. It is so entertaining to read how a legal case is handled, the many manipulations and tactics that have to be employed by both sides. In this novel, that is particularly seen since Haller (a defense attorney) is asked to prosecute this case. So you end up seeing both sides of the case. It also gives the reader a good idea of how cops investigate these cases in preparation for trial. This is a great plot. One that takes a big twist at the end. I highly recommend all Connelly books and especially the Harry Bosch series (though the Haller series is no slouch either). I recommend reading the series in order to get the most from the character development from one story to the next.
